Pet owners in New York and New Jersey recently were warned about a deadly disease that is passed through rats. Recently there has been a rise in the number of dogs who have contracted leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted through rat urine that can infect animals and people. Dogs may be exposed to the infection after lapping up puddle water or being exposed to freshwater sources such as rivers, lakes and streams.

If lepto is left untreated it can lead to fatal kidney disease
It can also cause liver disease
Leptospirosis has a high mortality rate when it is diagnosed late
Testing allows veterinarians to identify and treat lepto quickly
