11/25 JOHN BUDZYNSKI, USPS, KATIE OLTHOFF, HOW U.S. FARMERS HELP MAKE OUR THANKSGIVING MEALS POSSIBLE

JOHN BUDZYNSKI FROM USPS - TIPS & SOLUTIONS FOR MAKING THE HOLIDAY SHIPPING EXPERIENCE SIMPLE AND MORE EFFICIENT

Each year, despite all the tips for surviving the holiday season, most of us still find ourselves a bit overwhelmed with everything that has to get done. No matter how organized you are, there always ends up being one last thing on your list – whether that’s cookies to make, a gift to buy or a package to send.

John Budzynski (consumer advocate & manager at USPS) discusses tips and solutions for making the holiday shipping experience simple and more efficient. In short, John will provide a variety of tips for listeners to skate through the holidays!

KATIE OLTHOFF - FARM WOMEN TELL US HOW U.S. FARMERS HELP MAKE OUR THANKSGIVING MEALS POSSIBLE AND SHARE THEIR FAVORITE HOLIDAY RECIPES

While Americans are busy gobbling up 46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving Day, many don’t stop to think about where the food on their tables comes from.  For the average American, Thanksgiving probably includes traveling, relaxing, indulging, football watching and spending time with family.  However, for farm families, the day probably starts and ends with chores, with a little bit of turkey in between.

The ingredients we use in our meals come from family farmers throughout the nation.  These dedicated farm families make our safe, nutritious, not to mention, delicious Thanksgiving meals, and every other meal throughout the year, possible.

In the U.S., 93% of the 2.1 million farms are family owned and operated.  And while only 1% of Americans claim farming as their occupation, U.S. farming supports more than 24 million jobs.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to hear from the farmers who make this meal possible.  Even though grain harvest is wrapping up throughout most of the country, that doesn’t mean the year’s work is done for farmers.

In this radio interview, American farm women will tell us why this Thanksgiving, as families gather to eat a wholesome meal, we should be thankful for a safe and healthy food supply from family farmers.  They’ll also share what the holiday is like on their farms, as well as some of their favorite dishes from their own Thanksgiving family traditions.

KATIE OLTHOFF is a wife, mom and turkey farmer.  Together with her husband and two boys, they raise three flocks of turkeys, all at different stages, at one time.  She is passionate about sharing the true story of agriculture and helping people understand where their food really comes from.

CAROLYN O’NEIL - REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND AUTHOR OF THE “SLIM DOWN SOUTH COOKBOOK - HOW YOU CAN AVOID THE THANKSGIVING ‘FOOD HANGOVER’

Nutrition therapists at the University of Maryland Medical System say the average Thanksgiving meal consists of 3,000 calories.

Many of those calories can cause a “food hangover,” because fat takes a lot of energy to digest so blood flow is diverted to the digestive system instead of the brain, leaving you feeling lethargic and uncommunicative with family and friends.
There’s a better way, according to Carolyn O’Neil, a registered dietitian and author of the “Slim Down South Cookbook,” who says the key to lightening the calorie load are recipe swaps, cooking techniques and portion control.

Carolyn shares her anti-“Thanksgiving Hangover’ tips with your viewers in live or live-to-tape interviews: When you book a window, we’ll provide you with background info, bio and suggested questions.

CHRISTINE CARTER - HAPPINESS EXPERT - KEEPING THE “HAPPY” IN HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Happiness Expert Dr. Christine Carter Discusses Practical Tips For Happily Navigating the Busy, Overwhelming Season

For many, the holiday season triggers a mix of feelings: we’re excited for it to arrive, yet often end up feeling overwhelmed once it does. During these months when the desire to feel happy and the use of the word itself prevail, Dr. Christine Carter, sociologist and happiness expert, says you CAN take steps to make the holiday season happier – and less overwhelming.

5 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOLIDAYS HAPPIER -- EVEN IF YOU ARE SUPER BUSY

The holidays are, at best, a mixed-bag for most people when it comes to happiness. We tend to look forward to this time of year, only to feel overwhelmed when it comes. Here are five science-based ways to make the holiday season happier--and less overwhelming--this year.

#1: Trade high expectations for big appreciation. Do you have high hopes about what will make this holiday season a good one? Unfortunately, unmet expectations often make us feel disappointed or even resentful. The reality is that unless we consciously cultivate gratitude, we are more likely to feel frustrated when we don’t get what we want than we are to feel grateful when we do. Turn this “abundance paradox” on it’s head. First, watch for where your expectations are keeping you from enjoying yourself. Then, make an effort to find something about the situation that you truly appreciate. Disappointment rarely makes for happy holidays, but gratitude can bring joy to the world.

#2: Create a giving trifecta (or make every gift you buy help someone in need). A mountain of research shows that giving to others -- particularly those in need -- makes us happier, so I’m always looking for ways to buy my Christmas gifts from retailers that donate money to causes I believe in. For example, this year I’m going to purchase gifts through the AmazonSmile program using my Chase Freedom card. This creates a giving trifecta: First, I get a gift for someone on my Christmas list; second, AmazonSmile donates a percentage of my purchase to a charity I love (the Tipping Point Community, a local non-profit that fights poverty); and third, I’ll also donate the 5% cash back I get from the Freedom card to Tipping Point.

#3: Lower your standards. This is a busy time of year, and something’s got to give. Let it be the little things. Even though I prefer homemade meals, I become very dependent on inexpensive prepared foods from Trader Joe’s at this time of year. Similarly, I’ve lowered my fashion standards so much that I basically wear the same outfit in different slightly different colors every day.  And I’ve stopped being such a perfectionist when it comes to gift giving; although I’d prefer to exquisitely wrap each gift in handmade paper, I get hives just thinking about having to wait in line at the post office to mail those gifts. This year I’m letting Amazon do my shipping and wrapping (see tip #2)!

#4: Have a go-to way to say no. We tend to have more invitations to events and parties, more opportunities to volunteer, and more people asking us to help out during the holidays than we could ever possibly accept. When we accept too many invitations, tempting as they might be, we eventually become too exhausted to enjoy the season. It helps to have (and practice!) a go-to way to say no. Mine is the strangely effective, “Thank you so much for asking, but that isn’t going to work out for me right now.”

#5: Put your to-do list on your calendar. One of the things that can detract from our happiness is our extra-long long task-list. Researchers used to think that worry about unfinished tasks was our unconscious mind trying to

SUSAN ZIRINSKY – EXECUTIVE PRODUCER,  48 HOURS: DEVIL’S ISLAND

48 HOURS: DEVIL’S ISLAND – An ex-Marine with a secret life has a girlfriend who goes missing in Panama – was it murder?

Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS travel to Panama to investigate the disappearance and death of a California woman who moved there with a boyfriend, who turned out not to be as perfect as he seemed in, “Devil’s Island” to be broadcast Nov. 15, 2014 (10:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Looking for a fresh start, Yvonne Baldelli and her boyfriend Brian Brimager moved to the beach-side community in Panama. He was an ex-Marine trying to make a go of it as a bar singer. She planned on making bathing suits and sell them to tourists.

Baldelli described a life of bliss in Panama in frequent emails to family members. But then the emails stopped. And about a month after the last email, Valenzuela got a text from Brimager saying he was back in the United States, without Baldelli. In an email sent earlier, that Valenzuela had overlooked, Brimager wrote he and Baldelli had broken up after she found out Brimager had a child with another woman.

The news would rock Baldelli’s family and kick off a search for the young woman who appeared to have a bright future ahead. Instead, they would face driving a two-country investigation into the disappearance – and ultimately, the death of Yvonne Baldelli.
The police investigation would lead through the swamps of Panama and back to San Diego, where they learned Brimager was leading a second life and had a wife. Baldelli’s family also learned the couple was not as happy as suggested. There were stories of heavy drinking and fighting.

Van Sant and the 48 HOURS team travel to Panama to follow police searching a swamp for Baldelli’s remains and talk to locals about the couple. Van Sant and the team also confront  Brimager in San Diego, where he lives with his wife and child. Will he talk?

RICHARD STERBAN FROM THE OAK RIDGE BOYS – SUPPORTING THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE SERVICES PROVIDED FOR VETERANS

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS ASK LISTENERS TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE SERVICES PROVIDED FOR VETERANS

The American Legion and the Grammy Award-winning Oak Ridge Boys are uniting to raise awareness and support for the needs of U.S. military veterans, including better detection and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), help with the VA benefits process, as well as education and career opportunities for those who served our nation in uniform.

The American Legion is the country’s largest veterans service organization, with 2.4 million members who work every day on behalf of the men and women who have served our nation in uniform. The Oak Ridge Boys will participate in a national fundraising and awareness campaign to support the detection and treatment of mental health issues among veterans, 22 of whom are lost each day to suicide.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that upwards of 20 percent of veterans from the recent wars are confronting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • The most recent data of veteran suicides reports we are losing 22 veterans a day by their own hands – a heartbreaking trend that must be changed.
  • This fundraising campaign will help support better detection and treatment of PTSD, help with the VA benefits process, and education and career opportunities for those who served our nation in uniform.
  • This Veterans Day, The Oak Ridge Boys will be in Branson, MO, home to America's largest Veterans Day celebration, Veterans Homecoming Week. They will be performing Nov 11-13 at Oak Ridge Boys Theater.
  • The Oaks encourage listeners to learn more about supporting the services available through The American Legion by visiting www.SupportLegion.org and making a donation.

MORE ABOUT THE OAK RIDGE BOYS:
As one of country music’s longest-running groups, The Oak Ridge Boys’ legacy extends back to the end of World War II. The current group – which consists of lead singer Duane Allen, bass singer Richard Sterban, tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden – recently celebrated more than 40 years performing together. In that time, The Oak Ridge Boys have produced more than 30 Top 10 hit songs, 12 gold records, three platinum records, one double-platinum album and a double-platinum single, with combined sales totaling 41 million records sold. They maintain a vigorous touring schedule and released a live album in April, “Boys Night Out.”

JOHN MCINTOSH & ELIZABETH MCINTOSH – HOW TO ERASE NEGATIVE THINKING

New Book Takes Innovative Clinical Approach to Erasing Negative Thinking What do head lice, also known as nits, have to do with living a happier, healthier life?
Good question.

Doctor John McIntosh and Rev. Elizabeth McIntosh, authors of an important new book, MASTERING NEGATIVE IMPULSIVE THOUGHTS, use “nits” as both an acronym for their book’s title and as an analogy for the clearly unhealthy effects of negative thinking.

“Negative thoughts occur impulsively, so that is why they are Negative Impulsive Thoughts, or NITs, for short,” the authors say. “The nice analogy is that nits are also head lice and both (nits and NITs) are irritating, contagious, hard to recognize, hard to eliminate, breed fast, and spread like an epidemic.”

Unlike other, similar books that claim to have a magic route to happiness and health, MASTERING NEGATIVE IMPULSIVE THOUGHTS is based on solid clinical research, say the authors, who together have extensive experience in general medicine, medical research, and holistic health/wellness practices.

“Through our clinical experience, we have found that people have Negative Impulsive Thoughts and don’t realize it,” says Doctor John. “It’s the first time anyone in this field has actually defined negative thoughts so they can be recognized with three effective questions and given the reader a three-step process to treat them. This is a revolutionary new approach with many techniques to change the way you think forever! Evidence from medical research … clearly proves that controlling negative thinking can increase your lifespan by nine years; reduce heart attacks, strokes, cancers, infections, and mental illness; increase your productivity and creativity; and cause measurable increases in anti-oxidant levels in your blood.”

“This is not a soft and fluffy subject,” adds Elizabeth. “It has major physical and psychological effects on your health, well-being and productivity. This book gets people to reflect on their own internal dialogue, and once they recognize their NITs, they are able to take control over them and empower their lives.”

Doctor John also notes that, from a medical perspective, “We see people all the time who have bad emotional experiences and then develop life-threatening diseases. There’s a strong correlation medically that thinking negatively has a direct effect on people’s health. From a clinical perspective, controlling negative thoughts is just as important as not smoking, exercise and eating a low fat diet!”

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Doctor H. John McIntosh is known as the “Medical Guru” through his columns and media presence.  He was educated as a medical doctor in Scotland. He received a general medical degree from Dundee University Medical School in 1984 and moved to Australia in 1993. He received his Specialist Physician qualification in 1988 from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and specialist Family Physician qualifications in 1990 from the Royal College of General Practitioners. Other certifications include: Approved Trainer of medical students, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners; James Cook University Medical School, Central Queensland University; Trainer of Cognitive Institute programs, Cognitive Institute of Australia; Approved Trainer of sports medicine first aid courses, Sports Medicine, Australia; and Approved Allergan Cosmetic Injector training and trainer of injectors (doctors and nurses). PHIL LEMPERT, THE SUPERMARKET GURU - TOP FOOD TRENDS FOR 2015

THIS WEEKS TREND:

Grazing Golden-Agers: Ninety-one percent of people say they snack daily, according to Nielsen.
While snacking is on the rise among all ages and genders, research shows that snacking among consumers over the age of 65 could contribute to additional years with a higher quality of life. We’ll see more boomers – those raised in the “three square meals a day” era – employ a “grazing” approach to eating next year.

When boomers snack, they’ll focus on foods rich in nutrients like protein, fiber and Omega3s that can help promote bone health. Other popular snack choices include plant-based proteins and whole grains, like DAVID® Sunflowers Seeds and Orville Redenbacher’s® Gourmet Naturals made with with 100% whole grain popcorn.

LEO PEARLSTEIN - HANDY HINTS FOR THANKSGIVING DINNER

THE TURKEY When you buy a turkey, look for one that has a Pop-Up Timer.  When the little stem pops up you’ll know that the turkey has been cooked to perfection.
SEASONING Many people season the top of the turkey.  What you are doing is seasoning the skin, not the turkey.  What you do is shake the seasoning into the cavity and, by the way, I recommend poultry seasoning.

SEASONING UNDER THE SKIN Here’s an easy way to add some zest to your turkey.  Make a mixture of 2 tablespoons of olive oil, a handful of fresh parsley, 1 teaspoon of your favorite herb, 2 cloves of garlic minced (optional) and a few sprinkles of salt and pepper.  Another option is to add 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard.  Then, on the top of the turkey breast let the loose skin and gently push your hand forward to make a pocket, then take a thin slice of orange, dip it into the mixture and place it in the pocket on top of the breast.  There should be room for 2 or 3 slices. You’ll have a great tasting turkey.

HOT ROLLS Here’s another tip.  Your guests will be very impressed if you serve them hot rolls.  Buy some Rhodes Ready Baked Frozen Rolls and in the morning take out as many as you need, place them on a baking sheet or muffin tin and let them rise.  They have no preservatives, with a real delicious homemade taste.  Here’s the secret.  When you’re carving the turkey, the other is empty, place the rolls that have risen and let them bake for 15-20 minutes.  Then you can take the hot turkey and the hot rolls to the table at the same time.

MUSTARD MASHED POTATOES Take your regular mashed potatoes and divide into 2 parts.  To the 2nd part, white you are mashing the potatoes, take a couple of teaspoons of Morehouse yellow mustard and keep mixing.  Taste to see how you like the flavor.  You can add more if you wish to increase the flavor.  That could be a pleasant surprise for your guests.  When you serve the potatoes, in a table tent in front of the serving bowl, indicate traditional mashed potatoes and Mustard mashed potatoes.

DESSERT You will have the usual pies, cakes & cookies that everyone looks forward to.  Give your guests an unexpected treat and add icecold watermelon slices or cubes.  It will be a welcomed treat at the end of your heavy meal, cold and refreshing and only 40 calories, which will still let them enjoy the heavy desserts, too.  Watermelon is very healthy.  It’s loaded with antioxidants and vitamins.  It has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable.
