HEATHER MURAN – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SAN LUIS OBISPO WINE COUNTRY – ROLL OUT THE BARRELS WEEKEND (THURS-SUN, JUNE 23-26)

The wineries of SLO Wine Country boast an average distance of just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in prevailing marine conditions that are among the most pronounced of any wine region in California.

SLO Wine Country includes two small adjoining American Viticultural Areas—the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley—and other nearby winegrowing areas.  Each of these areas shares a unifying proximity to the ocean, as well as to each other. Collectively, these growing conditions forge a unifying wine quality that is native to SLO Wine Country:

Cool
The reliable cooling effect of the nearby Pacific Ocean ensures a long growing season, enabling the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness and natural balance. Cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir excel in the heart of SLO Wine Country, and even the warmest areas benefit from considerable marine influence.

Consistent
The ocean proximity also exerts a moderating effect on the climate, minimizing temperature swings so that growing conditions are rarely hot or cold. The result is an extraordinarily steady growing season that fosters balanced ripening and consistent quality from vintage to vintage.

Complex
The imprint of the ocean is also evident in SLO Wine Country's uncommonly complex soils, which are frequently riddled with ancient sea fossils. Soil variation enables the winegrower to mix and match varietals to specific soil profiles, or to add more "colors" to the palette of a single varietal, heightening overall quality and complexity.

NUTRITIONIST, AUTHOR AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE HEALTHY SHOPPER INC, ANDREA DONSKY - TALKS ABOUT REPLACING “MYSTERY MEAT” WITH A “CLEANER WIENER”

Now That It’s Barbecue Season FRANKLY---MAY BE TIME FOR A WIENERVENTION
DEFINED AS: Replacing “Mystery Meat” with a “Cleaner Wiener”

Americans love affair with the hot dog extends from backyard barbecues to ballparks during the summer months. Those in the know about top dog status say more than seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Every year, people in the U.S. bite into an average of 60 wieners each.

BETTER FOR YOU BBQ FOR MEMORIAL DAY
With the average American downing about 2,000 calories at a cookout, how can you have your BBQ and eat it too

  • Not all hot dogs are created equal. Choose those that are lower in fat, don’t have added nitrites or nitrates and are lower in sodium.  A typical hot dog has about 16 grams of fat, but a natural one without preservatives, artificial ingredients and fillers can come in at 8 grams. Applegate has a line of all-natural hot dogs that are made with just 100 percent grass-fed beef, water, salt and spices.  Also, there are plenty of varieties, including chicken and turkey that cut down on calories and fat.  For burgers, go for turkey or if you want ground beef, choose 90 or 93 percent lean.
  • Roll with It:  White with whole grain, wheat, spelt – just as hot dog options have changed, so have the buns.
  • Grilling is not just for meat any more. Grilling brings out the natural sweetness in vegetables. Veggie kebobs are fun and easy to do.  And many fruits taste even better when grilled such as pineapple, peaches, plums and watermelon.
  • Have fun with condiments. Choose ketchup and mustard with less added sugar – check out the ingredient list and make sure it isn’t the first or second ingredient. But don’t just stop there, diced onions, avocadoes, sweet bell peppers add flavor as well as boosts the nutritional value as does salsa and relishes.
  • Swap the sides.  Love potato salad, but not the fat? Try using Greek yogurt in the dressing instead of mayo, and get the creaminess, plus the added benefits of calcium and protein. Instead of creamy dressings for salads, use vinaigrettes made with heart healthy olive oils.

PENNY GADD-COSTER – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF WINEMAKING, RACK AND RIDDLE

When wine industry veterans Rebecca Faust and Bruce Lundquist first set out to establish Rack & Riddle Winery, they envisioned a leading-edge facility using premium vineyards to produce wine in the heart of the North Coast wine country. But not long into planning, their goals stretched to include a still and sparkling custom crush facility for custom crush clientele, as well as for the Rack & Riddle wine brand.

Bringing together seven winemakers on staff, including the sought-after skills of winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster, Rack & Riddle specializes in processes that take an incredible amount of labor, time and equipment, but that result in superior wine.

Faust and Lundquist harness a combined expertise of 40 years to create a niche in the marketplace. It’s no small feat to make sparkling wine in the traditional méthode champenoise. As such, most wineries don’t attempt it. Rack & Riddle unlocks the ability to create outstanding, award-winning sparkling wines for a host of brands.

From small boutique wineries to large multi-national wine producers and everyone in between, Rack & Riddle provides unparalleled custom crush and winemaking services to all of our partners. We ensure our custom crush clients receive exactly what is needed, from an all-inclusive “grape to glass” experience, or by simply assisting with existing winemaking and production needs.

Making sparkling wine can be achieved in a variety of different ways. However, if you are as dedicated as we are about creating superior sparkling wines from only the best grape sources—as Faust and Lundquist learned from their history at Piper Sonoma and J Vineyards, respectively—the only way to make sparkling wine is by méthode champenoise.

Across the winemaking industry only a handful of wineries are engaged in custom méthode champenoise. Rack & Riddle stands nearly alone in that respect, especially in California, by offering the age-old, traditional French method.

The roots of this method are fascinating—engineered in the early 1600’s by Dominican monks in the Champagne region of France, monk Dom Perignon is said to have mused about the champagne bubbles, “I am drinking the stars”.

Creating those effervescent “stars” is a labor of love involving two fermentations and a process of “riddling” to remove the lees from the bottle.

In fact, Rack & Riddle’s very name is inspired by the process. “Racking” alludes to the process of removing sediment from still wine and “riddling” is the counterpart process for sparkling wine. The Rack & Riddle brand logo reflects this in its imagery of a historic French riddling rack.

From the start—as blueprints were drafted and ground broke in 2007—it was of utmost importance that Rack & Riddle was built with winemakers in mind. True to Rack & Riddle’s way of operating and treating each other as family, the initial team members were an integral part in the founding and design of Rack & Riddle’s first 125,000-foot winemaking facility.

Together Bruce, Rebecca, Oded Shakked (Bruce’s former business partner at Longboard Vineyards), consulting winemaker the late Raphaël Brisbois, winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster, former production manager Lisa Kashin and cellar master, the late Tom Meeker, helped design the organic-certified still and sparkling custom crush facility, and choose the very best equipment.

Today, nine years later, Rack & Riddle’s team has grown to more than 75 employees, including expert winemaking, production and cellar staff, and on-site lab team.

Our continuing interaction with client winemakers means we are constantly learning, and always keeping an open mind to new ideas. It’s this philosophy that helps Rack & Riddle stay ahead of the curve when it comes to producing outstanding blends for our clients’ wine brands.

In 2013, we were thrilled to announce Rack & Riddle’s expansion into Sonoma County. This natural step for Rack & Riddle and the ability to offer services in the hub of the Sonoma winemaking region represents a milestone in the evolution of our company.

The centrally-located facilities, which officially opened January 1, 2014 (Rack & Riddle Alexander Valley) and June 1, 2014 (Rack & Riddle Healdsburg) increased winemaking space, bottling and stainless steel tank and tirage storage capacity. The move to Sonoma County also allows clients to state “Healdsburg” on their labels—all attractive benefits we’re thrilled to offer with our new facilities.

With its unique blend of traditional methods along with the best new technology, Rack & Riddle is dedicated to sustainable farming practices, allowing nature to bring out the unique attributes of every winegrape that passes through our facilities. Rack & Riddle is California certified organic for those brands wishing to produce organic labels.

We are about more than just slapping a label on a bottle or mass producing wines. We are about ensuring the true nature of the wines shines through so distinctively that you’ll be proud to share, sell, and taste for yourself the wines crafted with our care, passion and expertise.

In short, we help our custom crush clients create wine that’s ready to stand neck and neck with the area’s best.

We hope you will raise a glass of bubbly with us to celebrate what so many have worked so hard to create. As a legacy of excellence in sparkling and still wines is forged, our greatest goal is that you will join us on the journey!

05/26 THOMAS HOUSEMAN, ANNE AMIE VINEYARDS, STEVE STRAUSS, BANK OF AMERICA SURVEY, GRAMMY-NOMINATED COUNTRY SINGER TRACE ADKINS, PBS’ NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT

THOMAS HOUSEMAN - WINEMAKER, ANNE AMIE VINEYARDS

Pinot reigns supreme at Anne Amie Vineyards with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc forming the heart of our production. Complementing the pinot family is Old-Vine Estate Riesling and Müller Thurgau, planted in 1979.  Our vineyards are located in the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton District and on the steep hillsides of the Chehalem Mountains, both nestled in Oregon’s verdant Willamette Valley.  Our tasting room hosts breathtaking views of our vineyards and the Pacific Coast Range. We look forward to your visit.

HISTORY:
When Dr. Robert Pamplin, one of Oregon’s most forward-thinking philanthropists and businessmen, purchased the historic Chateau Benoit Winery in 1999, his vision was to create wines of the highest quality to reflect his passion for excellence. To this end Dr. Pamplin has charged winemaker Thomas Houseman and winegrower Jason Tosch with the task of crafting extraordinary pinot noir. Thomas, Jason, and the rest of the crew are absolutely passionate about producing wines of the finest quality and have dedicated their lives to this quest. For more information about Dr. Pamplin, Thomas, Jason and the entire Anne Amie team, read their bios.

Pinot reigns supreme at Anne Amie Vineyards with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc forming the heart of our production. Complementing the pinot family is Old-Vine Estate Riesling and Müller Thurgau, planted in 1979. As with all great wines, our’s start in the vineyards. We are fortunate to have some of Oregon’s best sites, all of which are Salmon Safe and LIVE certified. Our estate vineyards, along with those we purchase from, receive only the minimal required treatments and yields are dramatically reduced in order to give fruit with great depth and complexity.

Our estate vineyards are located in the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton District and on the steep hillsides of the Chehalem Mountains, both nestled in Oregon’s verdant Willamette Valley. Our LIVE certified winery is located on our Yamhill-Carlton property, a few miles from both Lafayette and Carlton, Oregon. We are proud to be part of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and the Chehalem Mountains Winegrowers.

ABOUT THOMAS HOUSEMAN:
Thomas’ winemaking career unofficially began in the basement of his parent’s home in Hampton Roads, Virginia. His Welch’s grape juice and orange juice concentrate wines are lost in time, but we’re sure they’d be showing well if any remained. Thomas narrowly escaped blindness from this stage of his life and went on to New York City, where he pursued a career in modern dance. Traveling the globe performing was great but it did not get him much free beer. So, he bought a book and taught himself to brew.

With the creativity of a dancer, the eye of a scientist, and the encouragement of friends who loved the free beer, the passion for fermenting reemerged. Thomas left the stage and went back to school at CSU Fresno in the enology program. It was there he fell in love with Pinot noir. And, across the globe he embarked again, first to California’s Anderson Valley, then to New Zealand, and finally to Oregon. After four years at Ponzi Vineyards, Thomas saw the opportunity to express himself at Anne Amie Vineyards where he is happy he can still use words like balance, grace, fluidity, elegance, power and style- words that once described his dancing, now describe his wines. In his free time, Thomas still brews, having dragged his equipment across the US. Yoga and running have replaced dance, but winemaking remains the common thread that started in a basement and continues at Anne Amie.

STEVE STRAUSS, SMALL BUSINESS EXPERTAND USA TODAY COLUMNIST - BANK OF AMERICA SURVEY FINDS ONLY THREE PERCENT OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS SEE EDUCATION AS MOST IMPORTANT HIRING FACTOR

BANK OF AMERICA SURVEY FINDS ONLY THREE PERCENT OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS SEE EDUCATION AS MOST IMPORTANT HIRING FACTOR

Findings Suggest Small Business Owners Concerned About Health Care Costs and Minimum Wage

This month, Bank of America released the spring 2016 Small Business Owner Report, a semi-annual study exploring the concerns, aspirations and perspectives of 1,000 small business owners (SBOs) across the country. This iteration of the report explores the state of small business, including attitudes toward the overall economy, growth expectations and how the upcoming elections are impacting SBOs’ future plans.

According to the survey, nearly half (49%) of SBOs said skill level is the most important factor when hiring a potential candidate and only 3% said education. The report found that the characteristics SBOs value most in an employee are trustworthiness (75%) and a strong work ethic (70%), while characteristics such as tech savviness (27%) and a knowledge of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) (12%), were less valued. Of those SBOs who are planning to hire this year (22%), the majority (54%) are hiring part-time candidates.

Small business expert Steve Strauss is available to discuss hiring trends and the emphasis on skill over education.

STEVE TALKS ABOUT:

  • The changing face of the workforce – Only 3% of those surveyed said education was the most important factor when hiring a potential candidate. Skill level is the most important factor in hiring according to 49% of SBOs, followed by fit with company culture (24%) and previous work experience (24%). There is also a preference for hiring Gen-X employees (47%) over millennials (26%) and baby boomers (8%).
  • Trustworthiness is the most wanted trait when hiring – While the majority of SBOs value trustworthiness (75%) the most when hiring a candidate, other top characteristics include being hardworking (70%), problem solving (51%), logical thinking (47%) and strong communication (45%).
  • Minimum wage, health care costs raise concerns – If the minimum wage was to be raised, 57% of SBOs would need to take financial measures to adjust for an increase, such as increasing the price of products or services (23%). In terms of health care costs, 74% of SBOs reported a concern that health care costs will impact their business. Since last year, health care costs have risen for 69% of SBOs who offer coverage.
  • SBOs hiring part-time and full-time workers – Of those who hired employees last year, they hired evenly full-time and part-time workers (52% and 51% respectively). Looking ahead, majorities plan to hire both part-time workers (54%) as well as full-time workers (51%). Twenty-six percent plan to add freelancers, independent contractors or skilled specialists.
  • SBOs are concerned about the upcoming elections – More than two-thirds (67%) report the upcoming presidential election will affect their business “a lot” or “somewhat.” When voting, SBOs are taking both personal and business considerations into account. Roughly one-third give more weight to their personal views, while 15% approach voting from a business perspective. More than half take both into consideration evenly. The top issues SBOs take into account when voting are: taxes, health care policy, and the economy and job growth.

5/25 LARRY LIPSON, ANDREA DONSKY, JULIA DIMON

LARRY LIPSON – AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT
For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Florida weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

This is phase two of what we started 20 years ago at LearnAboutWine.com - America’s first wine education website and first in wine event creation. LearnAboutWine will now evolve onto a digital platform; the transformation will take some time; so we will slowly rebrand our event efforts onto wineLA, reduce the number of activities we focus on, and elevate our efforts to focus on the next big thing… Doing what is best for the wine industry and the communities we serve.  Edicts:  innovate, evolve and excite.

We thank you for joining our newsletter, we will be sending fewer emails and packing them with amazing content. 05/20 LAURA KATH, SOLVANG CONFERENCE & VISITORS BUREAU, JESSIE ARTIGUE, BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 8TH ANNUAL BEST NEW PRODUCT AWARDS, STEVE EVANS THE MOVIE GUY

LAURA KATH - MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTOR,  SOLVANG CONFERENCE & VISITORS BUREAU -SOLVANG NAMED ONE OF THE “BEST HISTORIC SMALL TOWN” WINNERS IN 10BEST.COM CONTEST

SOLVANG NAMED ONE OF THE “BEST HISTORIC SMALL TOWN” WINNERS IN 10BEST.COM CONTEST

Solvang, California, USA— Tracy Farhad, Executive Director of the Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau (SCVB) is pleased to announce that Solvang was named one of the winners in the Best Historic Small Town category in the 10Best Readers' Choice 2016 travel award contest sponsored by USA TODAY. The list of all ten winners is located at http://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-historic-small-town/.

Farhad remarked, “Solvang is the only community in California to be honored as Best Historic Small Town in this exciting contest. We are so proud that media experts nominated Solvang initially; then people locally and around the world voted for Solvang online. Solvang began the contest ranked #20 and after four weeks of daily voting, we finished as #6 against some very well-known towns. We’re thrilled to have this recognition, especially since we value, celebrate and promote Solvang as a historic community year-round.”

In 2009, Solvang was honored with the prestigious “Preserve America Community” award by the national Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Solvang means “sunny field” in Danish; and was founded in 1911 by three Danish-American educators who discovered a place in the central coast of California where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper. In 2014,  Solvang was named by trivago as one of the best “Hidden European Towns in America” and in 2013 by Huffington Post as " #2 Place to Travel to Europe Without Leaving the USA.” Solvang celebrated its Centennial in 2011 with year-long festivities including a visit from Henrik, His Royal Highness The Prince Consort of Denmark.

This year, Solvang celebrates 105 years of its historic, cultural heritage with museums, attractions and seasonal festivals such as the 1804 National Historic Landmark Old Mission Santa Ines; Elverhoj Museum of History & Art; Hans Christian Andersen Museum (the only one in the USA); Wildling Museum of Art & Nature and the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum as well as our newest historic displays at The Copenhagen House including the Solvang House of Amber and Great Hall of the Danes. Festivals are traditional parts of Solvang’s historic charm. Danish Days annual festival emerged in 1936 commemorating Solvang’s heritage every September with artisans, folk dancing, three parades, aebleskiver breakfasts and free entertainment for the whole family. Locals and visitors savor the Taste of Solvang every March, Scarecrowfest in autumn and Julefest (Yule-fest) during December. In 2011, Solvang was named by Time Magazine as one of the “Most Christmas-y Towns in the USA.”

Solvang welcomes over 1.5 million visitors each year, offers more than 30 restaurants, 5 authentic Danish bakeries, 20 wine tasting rooms, 150 retail shops and 18 hotels, inns and resorts along with myriad outdoor recreational  opportunities with fun for all ages. Now in its second century, Solvang residents of many cultures still continue to enjoy the same historic traditions as the Danish-American founders envisioned—welcoming friends, family and visitors from around the world to share the joys of “California’s Little Denmark”.

The Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1986 to promote the City of Solvang, its Northern European culture, cuisine, arts and attractions of the village known as “California’s Little Denmark.”

PUBLICITY PIONEER, LEO PEARLSTEIN – AUTHOR, ADVENTURES IN PR

Public Relations Guru Shares Inside Stories of Unique Promotions, Plus Nostalgic Photos of Hollywood Royalty.

For the past six decades, publicity pioneer, Leo Pearlstein, has found a way to publicize every type of food imaginable with the help of a movie, TV, music, sports or political celebrity. How he ingeniously concocted his campaigns is revealed in his recently released book, titled "Adventures In PR," published by Create Space. This entertaining and educational book also includes over 50 nostalgic and rare photos of many of Hollywood's top stars, as well as famous politicians and sports figures. Pearlstein's candid tell-all of his adventures offers tips, tales and insight gained from publicizing a large variety of clients. From eggs and prunes, to turkeys, potatoes, chives, chickens and chips, the 95-year-old PR guru recalls the many trials and tribulations of getting hard-to-obtain media attention for his clients' products. Pearlstein's publicity campaigns not only helped sell food, but also the TV and movie projects of the celebrities with whom he worked. The book not only describes many successful PR campaigns, but also how Pearlstein and his staff were able to turn some crazy mishaps into successes. Readers can apply these valuable lessons to their own personal and business activities. Pearlstein always came up with creative ways to reach the media: whether he was frying 1,000 eggs in a 10-foot frying pan with Abbott & Costello; photographing sexy movie star, Jayne Mansfield, barbequing a turkey; having JFK pose with a live turkey prior to Thanksgiving; having Snoopy run for President to promote bread or working some food products into the "Rocky" movie.
'Adventures In PR,' Pearlstein's fourth book, is available online for $14.95 by visiting www.createspace.com/6029543, as well as www.amazon.com. For more information about 'Adventures In PR,' visit www.adventuresinpr.com.

ABOUT LEO:
When Leo Pearlstein founded Lee & Associates back in 1950, he had no idea he would one day be referred to as a "Legend of Food PR," as part of a feature in the Public Relations News publication, or be named a "PR superstar" in the Public Relations Quarterly magazine. TV Guide has even featured Leo and cited his ability and professionalism in getting his clients' products placed on television shows and in movies. Over the years, Leo, who personally supervised all phases of the agency's operations and members of his highly respected firm, have won numerous awards for outstanding accomplishments in food industry public relations, marketing and merchandising from many organizations. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, food conglomerates and major corporations have called on Leo's expertise in corporate communications. He pioneered in California agricultural commodity and generic promotions and has created and supervised successful programs for over 40 different food advisory boards, trade associations and co-ops, as well as state and federally-funded marketing groups. This includes industries such as almonds, apples, artichokes, asparagus, boysenberries, chives, corn, eggs, figs, grapefruit, papayas, peaches, pineapples, plums, prunes, seafood, tomatoes and turkeys. Some of the commodity groups he has handled range from the Danish Dairy Board and the English Cheese Association to the Mexican shrimp industry. Beverage clients he has worked with range from Pepsico and the milk industry to Suntory International (a billion-dollar conglomerate which produces over a hundred whiskey, wine and soft drink products). And because of his great knowledge of food, Leo was invited to participate in the first President's Council on Nutrition at the White House. In this book, Leo shares some of his favorite adventures in Public Relations.
