01/28 DANIEL WINER, JUICEPRESSO, YANNICK BISSON, OVATION TV'S THE ARTFUL DETECTIVE

DANIEL WINER - JUICING EXPERT & CEO OF JUICEPRESSO - HOW TO PROPERLY JUICE AT HOME, AND THE HEALTH AND MONETARY BENEFITS HOMEMADE JUICING CAN BRING TO YOUR LIFE

Juicing has become one of the most popular new year’s resolutions to lose weight and feel great.

Unfortunately most people start their juicing journey by drinking store bought juice instead of making their own at home. This common mistake can lead to actual weight gain, and cost you thousands of dollars per year.

ABOUT JUICEPRESSO
Beyond it's sleek design, Juicepresso has the smallest footprint of any in-home slow juicer. Internally Juicepresso houses a powerful DC motor, which is why we guarantee it to last at least seven years with daily juicing. Other cold pressed juicers use AC motors which are larger and less powerful, leaving you with a bulky appliance on your countertop.

While other cold press juicers operate at 80 RPM the Juicepresso operates at an incredibly slow 40 RPM. Although juicing time remains the same as traditional speed juicers, your fruits and vegetables are pressed slower, providing maximum juice extraction. Juicepresso provides up to 40% more juice than loud, old-fashioned juicers and since pressed juice lasts up to three days in your fridge, you can juice less often.

Inside the clear plastic drum lies Juicepresso's greatest feature. It's patented three in one screw! Other cold press juicers have several internal parts. Juicepresso has one, making it easy to clean. Simply pull your three in one screw out of the drum, rinse and place in the dishwasher. It's that easy, and we've made it BPA free!
Juicepresso is a great addition to any kitchen. There is simply no better way for you to enjoy the many benefits of juicing in your home.

ACTOR YANNICK BISSON - PLAYS WILLIAM MURDOCH  IN OVATION TV’S THE ARTFUL DETECTIVE - SATURDAYS AT 7 PM ET

Set in Toronto at the dawn of the 20th century, The Artful Detective is a one-hour drama series that explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a methodical and dashing detective who pioneers innovative forensic techniques to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. Season 9 of The Artful Detective begins in the year 1903, with Detective Murdoch and his team — Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy), Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) and Dr. Emily Grace (Georgina Reilly) — continuing to solve the unsolvable and confronting each case with wit, wisdom and innovation. Season 9 will also uphold the series' tradition of bringing historical figures to Toronto; William Shatner guest stars as Mark Twain in the second episode of the season.

Season 9 overview:
From within the walls of a maximum-security prison to the outer atmosphere of the earth,   Season 9 of The Artful Detective explores new worlds and mystifying cases. 1903 begins with Detective Murdoch and team still reeling over the arrest of Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris). Then a shocking death brings great change to the world of Station No. 4. Through it all, Murdoch and his colleagues continue to solve the unsolvable, coming face-to-face with everything from an impossible bank robbery to a threat to destroy Canada, confronting each case with wit, wisdom and innovation. The team also welcomes a new addition, Rebecca James (Mouna Traoré), a recent arrival in Toronto and young woman of humble origins who Ogden takes under her wing.

Season 9 will uphold the series' tradition of bringing historical figures to Toronto, including the likes of American author and humorist Mark Twain (William Shatner), Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier (Brian Paul).

Among the intricate investigations this season, Murdoch and Meyers (Peter Keleghan) race against the clock to save Canada from annihilation when they learn of a secret space program involving the inventor James Pendrick (Peter Stebbings; The Listener, Bates Motel). A macabre sequential killer makes statues out of the bodies of women encased in metal plating, leading Murdoch to suspect a link to a previous case. And an inquisitive childhood friend from wilderness camp, Winifred “Freddie” Pink (Alex Paxton-Beesley) warns Murdoch of imminent danger, leading them to venture to Algonquin Park and investigate at 30-year-old murder.

Vehement support and opposition to prohibition measures bring American temperance advocate Carrie A. Nation (Valerie Bugahiar) to the city and a little too close to Brackenreid’s beloved scotch. And a curious death in an opium den piques Ogden’s curiosity about the exotic drug.

Season 9 Episode Descriptions:
902 – “Marked Twain” Premiering Saturday, January 30 at 7 pm ET
When Mark Twain (William Shatner) stirs up controversy during a speaking engagement in Toronto, Murdoch and his team must protect the esteemed American writer.

01/26 LARRY MANETTI, DONNA KALEZ, DANA WHARF, VALENTINES DAY CRUISES

ACTOR LARRY MANETTI JOINS IN WITH A SPECIAL RECIPE

Larry Manetti started acting in his hometown of Chicago. After studying acting with the Ted List Theater Players, Larry drove to Los Angeles in 1972. Larry landed an agent and was sent to Universal Studios to audition for an opening as a contract player.  Luck was on his side. Jack Webb was casting a new series for NBC called The Chase. Larry played a young detective.  After attending acting school at Sal Dano's at night and doing bit parts by day, he scored. Baa Baa Black Sheep was being produced and cast at Universal, and the now famous writer Stephen J. Cannell was the executive producer and the role was a natural for Larry. He was cast as a cocky, hot shot pilot named Bobby Boyle. The show was a big hit for NBC but was cancelled within two years. Because the network was so impressed with Larry's on-screen presence, they cast him in a new series called The Duke. Bad luck! The Duke was cancelled in one year. Larry was back to playing whatever Universal told him to. Hoping to catch lighting in a jar, along came Magnum, P.I. and the role of Rick. This was his elevator...the show became a mega-hit for 8 years. Since Magnum, P.I., Larry has done co-starring roles in 25 feature films and guest starred on many hot TV shows. Larry is the author of a book titled Aloha Magnum. As for the future ... just follow his jet stream!

Be sure to tune into Larry's radio show every Tuesday at 4pm PT on CRN!

MARK MCKINNEY – STARS AS GLENN ON NBC’S “SUPERSTORE” MONDAYS AT 8PM/7CT

Mark McKinney stars as Glenn, Cloud 9’s kind but confused store manager, on NBC’s new comedy, “Superstore.”

McKinney has performed in, written and produced some of the most sophisticated
and groundbreaking television in North America. He has worked with Lorne Michaels on “Saturday Night Live” and Aaron Sorkin on both “Sports Night” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”

As co-creator, writer and ensemble cast member of “The Kids in The Hall,” seen on CBC, HBO and CBS, McKinney was nominated for three Emmy Awards for writing.  He followed “Kids” (1988-94) with three seasons on “Saturday Night Live” as both a principal cast member and staff writer. “Kids” later returned to television in 2010 with the raucous miniseries “Death Comes to Town.”

With Susan Coyne and Bob Martin, he co-wrote the international hit “Slings and Arrows.” The
team won the 2006-07 Gemini Awards for writing and McKinney also took home a Gemini Award in two acting categories. “Slings and Arrows” was soon after syndicated in the U.S. by the Sundance Channel.

Following “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” McKinney served as showrunner of Canada’s biting “Less Than Kind” where he won a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Directing on the series.

On the small screen, McKinney has also appeared on “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Wanda at Large,” “Corner Gas,” “Kevin Hill” and “Spun Out.” His feature films include Guy Maddin’s “Saddest Music in the World” and Scott Smith’s “Falling Angels,” which garnered him an ACTRA Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male. Other features include “The Ladies Man,” “Superstar,” “The Out of Towners” (with Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin), “Spice World” and “Dog Park.”

As a writer and producer, McKinney has series in development with CBC and served as executive producer on “Picnic Face,” a 13-part series that aired on the Comedy Network. He continues to perform standup in L.A. and tours with the ever-popular and iconic Kids in the Hall.

ABOUT SUPERSTORE:
America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and Ben Feldman (“Mad Men,” “A to Z”) star in the hilarious workplace comedy “Superstore” (from the producer of “The Office”) about a unique family of employees at a super-sized megastore. “Superstore” centers around Amy (Ferrera), the store’s most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together, and newly hired Jonah (Feldman), a naive dreamer determined to prove work doesn’t have to be boring. Their fellow associates include the sardonic Garrett (Colton Dunn, “Key and Peele”) the ambitious Mateo (Nico Santos, “Mulaney”) and the sweet pregnant teenager, Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom, “Shameless”). Overseeing them all are Glenn (Mark McKinney, “Kids in the Hall”) the store’s affable, clueless store manager, and Dina (Lauren Ash, “Super Fun Night”), the aggressive assistant manager who lives by a very specific code — namely the store’s employee handbook.

From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.

BRIAN TALLEY – OWNER/WINEGROWER, TALLEY VINEYARDS - HOW EL NINO IS AFFECTING THE CENTRAL COAST AND NEW RELEASE

EL NINO UPDATE FROM BRIAN TALLEY
El Niño is everywhere in the news due to severe weather in Texas, flooding in Missouri and unseasonably warm winter temperatures on the East Coast, all of which have been attributed to this weather phenomenon which is marked by warm Pacific Ocean temperatures near the equator.

Much of the focus in California has been on how El Niño will affect our ongoing drought.  The early part of the season has been good for the Sierra Nevada snowpack which was measured to be 108% of average in December.  Things haven't been quite so good for our local water supplies on the Central Coast, which receive very little benefit from snow that falls in the Sierra Nevada.  Lopez Lake, which supplies water to our local cities and downstream release for the Arroyo Grande Creek, is at its lowest level since the dam was completed in 1969.  Other local reservoirs, including Nacimiento, San Antonio and Cachuma are even lower.

As of December 31, total seasonal rainfall in Arroyo Grande was just over 5 inches, about average for this time of year.  All of this appears likely to change as the latest prediction is that El Niño will have a greater impact in our area during the month of January when the jet stream shifts to the south.  Hopefully this means accumulating snow in the Sierras and more local rainfall which will refill our reservoirs, recharge our aquifers and turn our hillsides green.  This will be good for everything we grow, especially our oldest chardonnay vines, which have really struggled during the drought.

It is widely acknowledged that a single wet year won’t solve California’s long term water supply issues, but it’s better than the alternative.  Cheers to rain in 2016!

NEW RELEASE
We are proud to introduce a new wine to the Talley Vineyards and Bishop's Peak lineup. The 2013 Bishop's Peak Elevation  is a proprietary blend that harks back to the origins of the Bishop's Peak brand in 1999 and Brian Talley's belief that Paso Robles could produce world class cabernet sauvignon. It serves as the flagship of the brand and winemaker Eric Johnson's vision of a true Bordeaux style blend from the appellation.

Produced from 50% cabernet sauvignon, 17% petit verdot, 17% cabernet franc, and 16% malbec
Grapes sourced from Santa Margarita Ranch
Harvested October 31 - November 12, 2013
Fermented with native yeast in stainless steel fermenters
Aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels, 39% new
1,496 cases bottles in June 2015

Deep ruby in color, the 2013 vintage of this classic Bordeaux blend is a beautiful expression of the Paso Robles appellation. The nose has bright notes of olallieberry and ripe plum, layered with roasted macadamia nuts and wet river rock. The palate is supple, intense and refined with underlying notes of oak and baking spice, followed by a hint a red cherry. Enjoy this beautifully crafted blend with roasted leg of lamb or a hearty beef stew.

01/13 LARRY LIPSON, DAVID HULL, THE HULABALLOER

LARRY LIPSON –
AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT

For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Florida weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

DAVID HULL, THE HULLABALLOER

ABOUT DAVE:
Dave Hull, aka "The Hullabalooer", is a Los Angeles radio personality voted one of the top ten LA radio personalities of all time. Born Jan. 20, 1934, he admits to being 77 with his personal addition herewith dated Mar. 3, 2011.

Hull began his radio career in Armed Forces Radio in Casablanca, Morocco and in commercial radio in 1955 at KGFL in Roswell, New Mexico. He reached Los Angeles' KRLA in 1963 as weekend relief and full time there on Jun. 6, 1964.

By the end of 1964, Hull's increasing popularity prompted one young female fan, Suzie Cappetta, to write and record a song entitled "Dave Hull The Hullabalooer", which quickly reached the local top 40 charts by early 1965. Hull became close with The Beatles during their 1965 and 1966 American tours. During that time, Hull taped approximately fourteen interviews with the band. He, along with Bob Eubanks, planned The Beatles' 1966 concert at the Chavez Ravine-Dodger Stadium. His work with the band earned him the honorary title of "fifth Beatle." Hull worked closely with The Beach Boys, The Dave Clark Five and The Rolling Stones during that period. In December 1965, Hull opened his "Hullabaloo" teen club on Sunset in Hollywood.

He got his nickname while working at WONE in Dayton, Ohio. Los Angeles radio historian Don Barrett quotes Hull as saying: "A woman wrote me from a hotel outside Dayton to say she couldn't stand all that hullabaloo. Well, Webster's defined it as a 'tumultuous outroar,' so I used it." Dave appeared (using the name David Hull) as a talent contest manager in an October, 1966 episode of "The Monkees".

Dave Hull was the first guest host on the nationally syndicated American Top 40 program, week ending November 6, 1971. ] He was heard in Los Angeles at the time on KGBS.

Hull hosted the nationally syndicated TV show "Matchmaker" in the late 1980s, reportedly seen in over 100 markets, a video version of his late 1970s "Lovelines" program heard on KMPC.

Today, Hull lives in Palm Springs, California and is now retired. He held the 6-midnight slot on one of the country's few remaining beautiful music stations, KWXY, from 1994 until his announced retirement in 2010. He also remains active as a voiceover for national radio and television commercials. Hull's book, Hullabaloo!: the (Mis)Adventures of L.A. Radio Legend Dave Hull was released in January 2013.

01/12 TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT, CYNTHIA PECK, ANGELO’S AND VINCI’S

TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT EXPLAINS HOW TO USE AMAZING REWARDS FOR A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

Imagine if every time you traveled, you could get inside the mind of a pro? Well, now you don’t have to because travel expert Christopher Elliott, “every consumer’s best friend” can tell you how to get the most from your travels by making smart choices for 2016. Elliott is the nationally syndicated columnist and author of HOW TO BE THE WORLD’S SMARTEST TRAVELER - and Save Time, Money and Hassle (National Geographic). Just in time to help consumers plan their travels for spring break and beyond, Elliott will share his exclusive expert tips with your audience.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ELLIOTT’S TOP TRAVEL TIPS:

  • WAIT FOR THE DEALS: Travel companies are adding more inventory even as fares and rates fall. You can take advantage of this excess to find last-minute bargains for hotels, airfare and car rentals.
  • REWARD COMPANIES THAT CARE ABOUT YOU: Loyalty programs play a pivotal role in customer booking decisions, but give your business to a company that takes care of you, not just for the physical "rewards" they offer.
  • ZIG WHEN EVERYONE ELSE ZAGS: Hotel occupancy rates and airline load factors will be higher than ever. But you can avoid the crowds by traveling during the off-season or heading to a seasonal destination during the off-season. While everyone else is headed to the beach, look for a mountain or international destination.

Elliott has more than 20 years’ experience as a consumer travel advocate, giving the inside scoop on how to navigate the often perplexing world of travel. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

CYNTHIA PECK – OWNER, ANGELO’S AND VINCI’S

OUR HISTORY
Forty-three years ago, our restaurant was built with tradition and has since continued with tradition. At our home in the old marketplace, we tribute our ancestors who came to America in the late 1800’s – their spirit and their recipes!

A little about this old building…
Originally built as an L-shaped marketplace in the days when Fullerton was an orchard (early 1900’s), the local farmers would bring their produce in from the fields by horse and wagon to sell to the townspeople. The original wood trusses of the old roof system may still be seen in the Venetian Room. Approximately twenty years later, renovation of the building changed it from its original L-shape to a square. This was accomplished by the large wood barrel trusses (an unusual truss!), which can be seen in the Sicilian Room and the Piazza Fantasia. During our renovation in 1992, the old wood, terra cotta tiles and brick was salvaged and re-used to keep alive the feeling and memories of those days long ago.

About our décor…
Be prepared when you walk into Angelo’s and Vinci’s Ristorante to be overwhelmed! With surprises in every corner, you won’t know where to look first! You will sit amidst the art of the great masters, in an Italian town square complete with the storefronts of old Italian butcher and cheese mongers, fruit and wine vendors, seamstresses showing their wares, and more. Fairy lights abound under cathedral ceilings as our ancestors smile down at you from the Family Love Altar. Explore and you will be surrounded by colorful Sicilian puppets, the carnival masks and canals of Venice, and the romance of Romeo & Juliet. Find our mystical Room of the Moon…and don’t forget King Kong, Dracula, Frankenstein, witches, ghosts and who-knows-what that await you in the Monster Wine Cellar!

And, as for Hollywood…
Founder, Steven Peck, renowned Hollywood dancer, choreographer and veteran actor of over 100 movies and television performances, has delightful photographs of over 40 years of famous stars, directors and dancers. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Broderick Crawford, Kirk Douglas, Walter Winchell, Sam Wanamaker, Vincent Minnelli, Sylvester Stallone, Ted Danson, David Hasselhof, Ray Sharkey, Shirley MacLaine, Cyd Charisse, Dolly Parton, Joan Collins, Raquel Welch, Olympia Dukakis, Shelly Winters and so many more. Films from Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros., MGM, Desilu, United Artists, Universal Studios, to name a few.

Ask for a “Walking Tour” brochure to find out more about the meaning and dedications behind our décor!

01/07 FOODPREUNER EXPERT CARLA LEE JOHNSTON, ALL MEAT VS. VEGETARIAN DIETS, SCOTT FRASER, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WINE COMPETITION

FOODPREUNER EXPERT CARLA LEE JOHNSTON - ALL MEAT VS. VEGETARIAN DIETS

ALL MEAT VS. VEGETARIAN DIETS
One of the trends in the diet world is part of a movement called "Zero Carb" living and although there are different subsets (some followers, for example, do eat vegetables or even, gasp, fruit), the basic principle is to avoid any and all carbs in your diet. It's similar to the Atkins diet that was all the rage some years ago. However, what we do know from Atkins diet, is that heavy meat protein damages the liver and kidneys and is carcinogenic.

How does one make sense and not be thrown about by get thin quick trends that can actually cause long term damage to our bodies?  Bottom line, studies show that losing carbohydrate fat by depriving yourself of your body’s first fuel supply does not last. What if a non-diet approach to a healthy life and trim tummy was much easier than you think?  As the new year dawns, diets are on the top of lists and there are lots of diet marketers getting fat in their bank accounts on our knowledge deficiencies….
