HEATHER MURAN - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SAN LUIS OBISPO WINE COUNTRY ASSOCIATION – HARVEST ON THE COAST

The wineries of SLO Wine Country boast an average distance of just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in prevailing marine conditions that are among the most pronounced of any wine region in California.

SLO Wine Country includes two small adjoining American Viticultural Areas—the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley—and other nearby winegrowing areas.  Each of these areas shares a unifying proximity to the ocean, as well as to each other. Collectively, these growing conditions forge a unifying wine quality that is native to SLO Wine Country:

Cool
The reliable cooling effect of the nearby Pacific Ocean ensures a long growing season, enabling the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness and natural balance. Cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir excel in the heart of SLO Wine Country, and even the warmest areas benefit from considerable marine influence.

Consistent
The ocean proximity also exerts a moderating effect on the climate, minimizing temperature swings so that growing conditions are rarely hot or cold. The result is an extraordinarily steady growing season that fosters balanced ripening and consistent quality from vintage to vintage.

Complex
The imprint of the ocean is also evident in SLO Wine Country's uncommonly complex soils, which are frequently riddled with ancient sea fossils. Soil variation enables the winegrower to mix and match varietals to specific soil profiles, or to add more "colors" to the palette of a single varietal, heightening overall quality and complexity.

LIFELONG BEST FRIENDS JUSTIN SKEESUCK & PATRICK GRAY TALK ABOUT THEIR INCREDIBLE HIKE ACROSS NORTHERN SPAIN  - VETERAN FIRE FIGHTER & MDA SPOKESPERSON ROGER LOPEZ ALSO JOINS THE CONVERSATION

I'LL PUSH YOU: A JOURNEY OF 500 MILES, TWO LIFELONG BEST FRIENDS AND A WHEELCHAIR

Film Documents Duo’s Incredible Hike Across Northern Spain; Helps Raise Money & Awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)

Find Out Where You Can See the Film in Your City

One day, Justin Skeesuck asked his lifelong best friend Patrick Gray if he’d like to hike across 500 miles of northern Spain. He was talking about the Camino de Santiago - a pilgrimage hike which, on foot, usually takes about a month to complete and is a challenge for any able-bodied person.  It would be especially challenging for Patrick as he would have to push Justin in his wheelchair. Without hesitation, Patrick agreed and said, “I’ll push you”.

Over the past 20+ years, a progressive neuromuscular disease has slowly taken away Justin’s ability to use his arms and legs. From each morning until night, Justin requires assistance in every aspect of life. Neuromuscular disorders, such as Justin’s, are a group of diseases that damage and weaken muscles over time. For some people, the disease starts early in childhood or is evident at birth. Others don’t have any symptoms until they are teenagers or adults, like Justin.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • More than 100,000 Americans are affected by a neuromuscular disease, including muscular dystrophy and ALS.
  • MDA has funded more than $1 billion in neuromuscular disease research since 1950.
  • Each year, MDA provides care and support to those individuals via best-in-class, comprehensive care at more than 150 MDA Care Centers.
  • Each summer, about 3,800 kids experience “the best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camps across the country – all at no charge to their families.

Justin and Patrick’s life-changing experience trekking 500 miles from the southwest of France, across the Pyrenees mountains to the Cathedral in Santiago in northern Spain despite Justin being in a wheelchair inspired them to help push others to achieve more. That's why they decided to share their story with the world in a new book and documentary film, both entitled "I’ll Push You." Emota, Inc produced the film and is presenting it with Fathom Events and  the MDA, which helps fund neuromuscular disorders and disease research that can lead to more people having experiences like this. The film will be presented in more than 550 theaters across the county in a special one-night-only release on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30pm and will feature information about MDA and the work the organization does to support families like Justin’s.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM VERIZON & ADVOCATE TIM HOLLISTER, WHO LOST HIS SON IN A CRASH

The Author of ‘NOT SO FAST: Parenting Your Teens Through the Dangers of Driving’ is Teaming up with Hum by Verizon with a Special Message for Parents

DOMINIQUE CICCARELLI – EDUCATION EXPERT FROM KUMON NORTH AMERICA - TIPS TO DEAL WITH MATH ANXIETY

CRUNCH TIME: HELP YOUR CHILD STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE

As students are back in full swing at school, some may feel the stress and pressure that comes along with it. The thought of a test can make even the most confident student feel stressed, but for some, the feeling goes beyond a little worry.  It has been shown that many students deal with “math anxiety”. And often times, that math anxiety starts at home. Research shows that children of highly math-anxious parents were more likely to develop math anxiety themselves when their parents helped with homework. Some studies show that 10 to 20 percent of adults experience math anxiety.

Education expert Dominique Ciccarelli will be available for interviews to give advice to parents on how to lessen math anxiety. Instilling confidence early is one key factor. Math skills at kindergarten entry can predict later math achievement.

ACTOR LELAND ORSER TALKS ABOUT HIS ROLE IN THE MODERN-DAY SPY THRILLER, BERLIN STATION

On Sunday, October 15 at 9p.m., EPIX's acclaimed spy drama BERLIN STATION returns. Berlin Station, a contemporary spy drama, takes a look at the activity of a CIA office on a global stage in the midst of an investigation into a now-infamous whistleblower. The series follows Daniel Miller, played by Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, “Hannibal”) a new arrival to Berlin’s CIA station who is on a clandestine mission to uncover the source of the Thomas Shaw leaks. In the wake of the Far Right tide sweeping across continental Europe, Germany finds itself on the precipice of a pivotal election. The captivating and charismatic Alt-Right party leader Katerina Gerhardt has capitalized on the refugee crisis and economic strife to woo disillusioned voters fed up with the status quo. She seems poised for a big win, and our heroes at Berlin Station must determine the nature of the threat she poses, and what role they should play. Is Katerina is a viable candidate with a controversial message who should be protected by the democratic process? Or, as preliminary evidence suggests, is she colluding with terrorists?

ABOUT BACCHUS KITCHEN:
1384 Washington Blvd.
Pasadena, CA 91104
How it all started...
Our extension to Bacchus’ Kitchen started in the spring of 2014. As I drove by and saw a for lease sign, I saw the potential for further serving a great neighborhood that we were already serving at The Eatery location. We are also a catering company and service many functions on the San Gabriel Valley. Since that part of the business kept growing, it was difficult functioning out of a 1400 square foot location that was taxing all elements of the business.  Construction and design started in the spring of 2014 and completed 8 months later into was is now Bacchus’ Kitchen. The kitchen has proved efficient for catering and banquets as well serving the dining room and patio. We wanted a relaxed, casual atmosphere for the neighborhood with one of the other elements involved at Bacchus is our music program that features a monthly concert of top tier jazz musicians. We have made friends with artists from all over the country who have graced the Bacchus Live stage and we are very grateful. We are very involved in local charities and gladly use our space for events supporting many different groups. We hope you join us soon and visit either Bacchus’ Kitchen or the Eatery on Allen.

LESLIE MCCUISTON JUST NAMED AMERICA’S 2017 PIG FARMER OF THE YEAR

NEBRASKA FARMER NAMED AMERICA'S PIG FARMER OF THE YEAR
The National Pork Board announced today that Leslie McCuiston, a pig farmer from Columbus, Nebraska, has been named the 2017 America's Pig Farmer of the YearSM, by achieving the highest combined score from a third-party judging panel and online voting. The award recognizes a pig farmer who excels at raising pigs using the We CareSM ethical principles and who connects with today's consumers about how pork is produced.

"We are pleased to have Leslie represent America's pig farmers. She embodies the very best in pig farming," said Terry O'Neel, National Pork Board president and a pig farmer from Friend, Nebraska. "It's important that we share with today's consumers how we raise their food in an ethical and transparent way. Leslie's interest in sharing her farm's story, as well as putting a face on today's pig farming, will help us reach this goal."

Focusing on people is McCuiston's main goal as a senior production manager for The Maschhoffs, LLC. McCuiston believes in equipping employees with the right tools to provide the best animal care every day. She oversees 70 employees who care for more than 18,000 sows in central Nebraska and surrounding states.

"For me, pig farming isn't just a job, it's a career that I am passionate about," McCuiston said. "I want to find new, innovative ways to show others what we do in pig farming, explain how much we care and help people understand where their food comes from."

McCuiston was named America's Pig Farmer of the Year following a third-party audit of on-farm practices and after taking part in a series of written and oral interviews by subject-matter experts. She has achieved excellence in all aspects of pig farming, including animal care, environmental stewardship, employee work environment and outstanding community service.

The panel of expert judges met in early September with the four finalists. Members of the five-member panel included Brittni Furrow, Walmart's senior director of sustainability; Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane; Kari Underly, a third-generation Chicago butcher, author and principal of Range®, Inc., a meat marketing and education firm; J. Scott Vernon, professor, College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, Cal Poly; and Brad Greenway, the 2016 America's Pig Farmer of the Year and chairman of the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance.

"As an animal lover and the leader of the country's first national humane organization, I am honored to be a judge for America's Pig Farmer of the Year," Ganzert said. "American Humane celebrates all those, including our nation's farmers, who care for animals and work hard to ensure they are treated humanely. Today, more than ever, it is important not only to point out where progress is needed, but to recognize when we get it right."

The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public. Through a legislative national Pork Checkoff, pork producers invest $0.40 for each $100 value of hogs sold. Importers of pork products contribute a like amount, based on a formula. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, science and technology, swine health, pork safety and sustainability and environmental management. For information on Checkoff-funded programs, pork producers can call the Pork Checkoff Service Center at (800) 456-7675 or check the Internet at www.pork.org.

MICHELE CASSALIA SHARES TIPS TO FIGHT THE UNSEEN DANGER OF POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY

BREATHE EASY IN A HEALTHIER HOME
The Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America (AAFA) shares tips to fight the unseen danger of poor indoor air quality

Indoor air quality can be 2-5 times worse than the air outside, yet your viewers are spending 90% of their time indoors. October is Indoor Air Quality Month, a time to raise awareness surrounding a mostly invisible problem of potentially harmful effects of poor air quality inside many homes. Many viewers are likely unaware of poor indoor air quality, but may have experienced firsthand its impact, ranging from eye and throat irritation to increased asthma symptoms. In fact, pets, cooking and everyday cleaning activities like vacuuming and dusting may kick up millions of particles we can’t see into the air we breathe. And, cold winter months can worsen indoor air quality, as many close the windows and run their furnaces, reducing natural ventilation.

In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health, alongside issues such as toxic waste and clean water scarcity. Even well-maintained and ventilated homes can be a breeding ground for dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria and other viruses.

Michele is here to share the most common causes affecting the air in your home, and simple, specific tips to increase healthier air circulation.

Proper Ventilation – Cooking is a big source of indoor air pollution, particularly if you have a gas stove; be sure your kitchen is well-ventilated, and open windows and doors while cooking.
Humidity Control – Run exhaust fans in bathrooms, remove mold growth and promptly fix all leaks to reduce the potential breeding ground for mold spores and bacteria.

Changing your Air Filter – The EPA recommends checking your home’s air filter monthly and changing it at least quarterly to help improve indoor air quality. 3M Filtrete filters are 90% effective at capturing dust, pollen and mold spores, 25% more effective than other filters on the market.
Eliminate Toxic Products – Check what chemicals are in your hair/nail products, art supplies and cleaning solutions, look for products marked “low VOCs” and use only in a well-ventilated area.

“DR. E” - PHYSICIAN ADDRESSES OVERACTIVE BLADDER

STOP STALLING: ADDRESSING OVERACTIVE BLADDER
Physician Discusses What is Normal “Peehavior” and What May Not Be Normal

Women do it all – they work, raise families, attend school and care for elderly parents. Yet, when it comes to their bladder health – they just cope with any issues rather than talk to a doctor about them. According to the new Peehavior survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Astellas Pharma US, 60 percent of women do not think about their bladder health often if at all.1 But no one is immune from the sudden urge to pee.

In fact, approximately 46 million U.S. adults age 40 and older experience overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms of urgency, frequency and leakage at least sometimes.2 This could mean the difference between going and running to the bathroom. Despite this, only about 1 in 8 women seek treatment for symptoms.3

The new Peehavior survey of 2,854 women across the United States and from different ethnic backgrounds reveals the bathroom habits of U.S. women and the lengths they’ll go when they have to go. The results bring to life what bathroom habits are normal so that we can get real about those habits that may actually be indicative of a diagnosable and manageable medical condition, OAB.

Ekene Enemchukwu, M.D., M.P.H. – “Dr. E” – a practicing female pelvic medicine urologist, will set the record straight on OAB by discussing symptoms, causes and options to help manage the condition as well as encourage women to talk to their doctor. She will also discuss the recently launched video series: “Stall Stories”, which addresses the sensitive topic of OAB with a subtle dose of humor and set in a bathroom among the stalls and hand dryers
