USDA OFFERS TIPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM  FOODBORNE ILLNESS THIS SPRING

Spring holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends over buffet or potluck dinners. Whether you're planning to cook a ham for Easter, brisket for Passover, or making a meal for mom this Mother's Day, it's important to remember improperly prepared or mishandled foods can be a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria that causes foodborne illnesses. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service has food safety tips to ensure that the foods you share with your friends and family keep everyone in safe.

Each year in America, roughly 128,000 people are hospitalized and 3,000 people die from foodborne illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). USDA is offering tips to help consumers learn how to protect themselves from food poisoning as they prepare various food items.

Anyone with questions about food storage or food poisoning can now speak with USDA food safety experts longer than ever before! The USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline has extended its hours and experts are now available from 10am - 6pm ET, Monday through Friday at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) to answer the public's questions. Consumers can also chat live with a food safety expert in English or Spanish at AskKaren.gov.
