The CDC cites that the flu costs the U.S. more than $87 billion annually and is responsible for the loss of nearly 17 million workdays each flu season. The flu is going to severely impact businesses this season – will your workspace be one of them?
According to the fifth annual Flu Season Survey from Staples, 60 percent of employees said they go to work with flu. Additional findings include:
- Many employees still feel they can’t take a sick day: despite 88 percent of managers encouraging the sick to stay at home, 40 percent feel there is too much going on at work to stay away
- Employees are taking charge of their own health and wellness: 70 percent of respondents have some involvement in cleaning their work spaces.
- Recent virus outbreaks are affecting behavior: 53 percent of employees said they will take extra precautions to protect themselves against the flu and other illness this winter.

CHARLES GERBA: Chuck Gerba is a professor in the Departments of Soil, Water and Environmental Science (College of Agriculture), and Epidemiology and Biostatistics (College of Public Health) at the University of Arizona. His recent research encompasses the transmission of pathogens by water, food and domestic environments; development of new disinfectants; domestic microbiology and quantitative microbial risk assessment. He has been an author on more than 500 articles including several books in environmental microbiology. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Microbiology and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the 1999 Award of Excellence in Environmental Health from National Association of County and City Health Officials for his work on norovirus outbreaks on the Colorado River. He has been a consultant to the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and numerous state and local agencies He has appeared on numerous TV shows including Good Morning America, Today Show, 20/20, CNN News, 48 Hours, ABC News, The View etc.. His work has been quoted in Readers Digest, Prevention Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Women’s Health, Men’s Health and Entrepreneur, among other notable publications.
