OSCAR RENTERIA - RENTERIA WINES - SEPTEMBER CELEBRATES CAL WINE & NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE
The Napa Sonoma Mexican-American Vintners Association (NS MAVA) was honored this past Wednesday for their contributions to the California wine industry kicking off the month that celebrates both the state’s wine and the national recognition of Hispanic Heritage. The presentation at the capitol began at noon and was followed by a wine reception.
The resolution was sponsored by State Senator Noreen Evans, Chair, Senate Select Committee on California’s Wine Industry along with 26 senators and assembly members from across the state. Attending were fourteen Mexican-American family winemakers from Napa Valley and Sonoma County representing NS MAVA. And supporting the resolution were the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce from Napa and Sonoma counties.
“Who knew that our efforts would be honored at such a prestigious gathering,” said Founding Board President Rolando Herrera, owner of Mi Sueno Winery. “Our thanks go to Senators Noreen Evans and Ricardo Lara and Assembly member Wes Chesbro and the members of the Senate and Assembly for their support.”
The resolution was presented on the floor of the Assembly and read on the floor of the Senate where the attending wineries were asked to stand before the Senate for recognition. Later they were given a tour of the capitol before adjourning to showcase their wines at a reception.
Most winemakers being honored are natives of Michoacán, Mexico who came to California decades ago with hopes of earning the American Dream. Working through the ranks as farmworkers and vineyard operators, today they’ve come to realize that dream. In 2010 they were invited by the Governor of Michoacán to pour their wines at the Michoacán State Fair and together realized a common heritage and history that compelled them to form the NS MAVA. Today, NS MAVA winemakers share a camaraderie rich in history and perseverance to leverage their crafts in Mexico and the United States, and specifically California, where Mexican-Americans are one of the fastest growing wine consumer groups.
“Today was a great day for the recognition of the contributions of the Mexican-American community to the state’s wine business—a proud heritage,” said NS MAVA Board President Rafael Rios of Justicia Wines.
“I’m proud of our association and the Hispanic community for leading the California wine industry from the ground up. It is a natural fit to honor this good work in September with both California Wine Month and the national Hispanic Heritage month,” said Oscar Renteria of Renteria Wines.
Wineries attending: Alex Sotelo Cellars, Ceja Vineyards, Delgadillo Cellars, Encanto Vineyards, Honrama Cellars, Justicia Wines, Maldonado Family Vineyards, Mario Bazán Cellars, Marita’s Vineyard, Mi Sueño Winery, Renteria Wines, Robledo Family Winery, Voces Wines, Volcán Cellars.
State Senator Noreen Evans represents the Second Senatorial District, including all or portions of the Counties of Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Marin (caretaker), Napa, Solano and Sonoma. Senator Evans Chairs the Senate Committee on Judiciary, the Senate Select Committee on California’s Wine Industry and is the outgoing Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus.
