10/29 TREVOR RIGGEN, ROBERT AND DEBORAH SIMON

TREVOR RIGGEN - VP DISASTER OPERATIONS OF AMERICAN RED CROSS

Emergency management teams and utilities along the East Coast are bracing for what could be a $1 billion nightmare, as Hurricane Sandy's 100 mph winds surge toward the heavily populated region between the Carolina coast and New England.  Meteorologists say New Jersey and the New York City area could see around five inches of rain and gale-force winds close to 40 mph.  Eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and western Virginia could get snow.  Experts are calling this a Category 2 storm, and it’s already killed dozens in the Caribbean. From Florida to Maine, the Red Cross is placing shelter locations, trained disaster workers, vehicles and supplies on alert.  The Red Cross is also working in close collaboration with government officials and community partners to coordinate potential response efforts.
