How Misinformation and Shame Can Hurt Patients
A Misunderstood Condition That May Prevent Gout Patients From Getting Proper Care
Quick – what pops into your mind when you hear the word “gout”? Research showed that patients, their families and even health care providers believe gout is caused mainly by overindulgence in alcohol and rich food.1 And that attitude is also shared in the popular press. But, in reality, gout is a serious and painful disease.1
Approximately 8.3 million Americas have gout, a chronic, progressive inflammatory arthritic condition that is caused by too much uric acid in the bloodstream.2 Chronic inflammation induced by uric acid crystal deposits lead to severe pain and joint damage. 2 Some symptoms can include sudden and severe episodes of pain, stiffness and swelling, redness and tenderness. 2 And, although for many people, gout can begin in the big toe, left untreated, high uric acid levels and gout will in time affect more joints, including your ankle, heel, knee, wrist and fingers, to name a few. 2
