Gina Doyle - General Manager - Tam O'Shanter Inn
Delighting diners for over eight decades, the Tam O'Shanter Inn is Los Angeles' oldest restaurant operated by the same family in the same location. It has been said that our customers are willing to dance a jig for the fine food and old world atmosphere of this cozy Tudor inn. If you've got some Scottish ancestry, you might even find your family tartan among the extensive collection which decorates the walls of our several dining rooms.HistoryIn 1922, you could crank up the engine of your Hupmobile, lurch through the dust and ruts of a country road, and arrive at a convivial old-world inn. Established by Lawrence Frank and Walter Van de Kamp, the restaurant offered hearty food and amiable service. Tom Mix, Fatty Arbuckle, Mary Pickford, John Wayne and Walt Disney and members of his studio were regulars in the early days of the "Tam." In fact, the Disney people had lunch here so often, some referred to it as the studio commissary. Times changed, and so did the Tam O'Shanter. In 1968, following a revamping of the menu and a major remodeling, the restaurant was renamed the Great Scot. As the years passed, improvements continued to be made. But the important things have stayed the same, particularly the sense of pride among everyone involved in our operation. We are especially proud of our co-workers - some of whom have given us over four decades of service. It is that spirit that has distinguished this restaurant since the day its doors first opened. It is what has kept people coming here through the years, knowing that in this place they will find something more than quality dining. And in that spirit, it seemed entirely appropriate in 1982, in honor of our sixtieth anniversary, to change the restaurant's name back once again to the Tam O'Shanter Inn. Nowadays, that dusty road where it all started is a busy city boulevard, and the rolling countryside around our inn is no longer exactly wilderness. Our inn is, however, still a convivial haven and still ours: the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles owned and operated by the same family in the same location. Today, over eighty years later, stewardship of the restaurant is in the hands of the second and third generations of the Frank and Van de Kamp families. They, like their forebears, remain "Scots by affection," offering hearty food and heartwarming drink, served with a cheerful "welcome".

Lou Kapcsandy President/ Owner - Kapcsandy Family Wines
Our family – Lou, Roberta and son Louis Jr. – purchased the property in May, 2000. This vineyard was known to us for many years from Beringer's winemaker’s Myron Nightingale and Ed Sbragia. The wines from State Lane vineyard continued to be highly sought after. The 1995 State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 95 points by the Wine Spectator as the top Cabernet Sauvignon in California. Robert Parker has consistently rated the wines at 90-plus points. In 2001, we teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. We conducted comprehensive investigations of soils profile, physical properties, soils chemistry, geological formation and drainage. To our amazement and pleasure, we discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions. We have great respect, admiration and love for this very special land in Yountville, CA, and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under our family label.
Vince Ferragamo - quarterback NFL and CFL
born in Torrance, California - an American football quarterback in the National Football League and Canadian Football League. He played for the Los Angeles Rams (1977-1980 and 1982-1984), Buffalo Bills (1985) and Green Bay Packers (1985-1986). After leading the 9-7 Rams to road victories over the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1979 NFL Playoffs, Ferragamo started for the Rams in Super Bowl XIV, in which the Rams led after three quarters of play before being overwhelmed by the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-19. Ferragamo enjoyed his best statistical season in 1980 in which he threw for 30 touchdowns, tied for second most in the NFL. The Rams again made the playoffs, but were defeated by Dallas, 34-13 in an NFC Wild Card Playoff game. On December 26, 1982, Ferragamo threw for 509 yards in a game against the Chicago Bears, at the time the second highest passing mark in league history behind former Ram Norm Van Brocklin. It was the third time in league history that a quarterback had passed for over 500 yards in a game, the first by Norm Van Brocklin (554 yards) and the second by Y.A. Tittle (505 yards). Subsequent to his return, Ferragamo led the Rams back to the NFL playoffs during the 1983 season behind the running of rookie Eric Dickerson. After beating the favored Cowboys in Irving in the wild card matchup 24-17, Ferragamo and the Rams were drubbed by the defending Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl-bound Washington Redskins by the score of 51-7. He has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice, once in 1980 and again in 1981. Ferragamo currently owns a real estate business in southern California-and is about to launch a private label company, Ferragamo-Migneco Vineyards, featuring fine quality domestic and imported wines. He has also been a retailer, an artist, an actor, a restaurateur and even a flight instructor, during World War II. He is also a Buddhist monk.Robert Lawrence Balzer has always been surrounded by Hollywood celebrities and in 1978 he teamed with producer Duke Goldstone and director - writer Dennis F. His love affair with wine began with Repeal, about the time he graduated Stanford and joined Balzer's, the family gourmet market on Larchmont Boulevard, just south of Paramount Studios, not far from the heart of Hollywood and mere miles from Beverly Hills. Customers included Cecil DeMille, Alfred Hitchcock, Ingrid Bergman, and Marlon Brando. In 1936, at the age of 24, Robert Lawrence was put in charge of the market's wine department. At the time, he knew nothing about wine, but soon learned. California wines were beginning to find their way onto retail shelves, after Prohibition's 13-year dry spell.Balzer put out a customer newsletter praising the wines stocked on the shelves of the Larchmont store; Almaden, Inglenook, and Paul Mason. Will Rogers Jr., a classmate at Stanford, was intrigued by Balzer's writing and in 1937 asked him to write a wine column for his newspaper, the Beverly Hills Citizen. After writing the first of his 11 books on wine, Robert Lawrence began branching out. He started writing for Travel Holiday magazine, which published his articles for more than two decades and until recently Balzer was the person responsible for granting the coveted Holiday Magazine Restaurant awards. In 1964, he began writing a weekly column for the Los Angles Times Magazine. A few years later, he launched Robert Lawrence Balzer's Private Guide to Food and Wine, quite likely the first wine newsletter in America.Robert Lawrence also has a spiritual side. Since the early `50s he has studied Buddhism, at one time at a temple in Cambodia where he was ordained a teaching monk. Indeed, teaching may be his greatest passion. Over the years winemakers have made regular pilgrimages to speak to Balzer's classes, which have developed an almost cult like following among students. At his annual birthday parties, those lucky enough to be invited mingle with owners of the world's greatest wineries, who fly to Southern California, and the City of Tustin, for the event.

a true Character of the wine world this week. David Hirsch, an iconic grower of Pinot and Chardonnay on the true Coast of Sonoma county in California. His persona is one of a true pioneer, however he had humble beginnings in the womens clothing world prior to buying his 1100 acre estate back in 1980. Perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific at Fort Ross, Sonoma County, Hirsch Vineyards is the birth ground of great pinot noir on the Sonoma coast. David Hirsch founded the vineyard on the extreme Sonoma Coast to grow fruit and make site-specific wine. The pinot noir and chardonnay wines from Hirsch Winery give the passionate drinker an experience of the clash of opposites meeting in Nature and Life: the edge of the continent washed by the sea; the eviternal grinding of the North American and Pacific plates along the San Andreas Fault; the wet winters and dry summers caused by the ocean and desert climates; the dripping rainforest and parched pastures; the contact and intermingling of cultures: Native American, Mexican, Russian, European; the change in rural economy from logging and ranching to winegrowing. In the grapes and wines of Hirsch Vineyards and Winery you find a natural balance and consistency in the harmonious resolution of these opposites.Enjoy perfection from the edge.

Scott Palazzo - Palazzo Napa Valley Red Wine
It began almost 30 years ago . . . a love affair with the wines produced from the Bordeaux region of France. Particularly, wines from the small, family owned Chateaus that dot the rolling hillsides of the beautiful ‘Right Bank’ countryside. It is from here, that my inspiration came. Finally, the chance to fulfill a life-long passion and dream of producing a wine of exceptional character and style, that would capture the ‘power and elegance’ of the wines I tasted and enjoyed as a young man living in France. In November 2005 that dream was realized . . . when I released my first vintage of PALAZZO Napa Valley Red Wine! Like the great wines from the 'Right Bank' villages of St. Emilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux . . . Merlot makes up the lion share of PALAZZO Napa Valley Red Wine . . . giving the wine its sheer power & strength, silky texture and beautiful layers of rich cherry & black currant fruit. The Cabernet Franc adds a floral spiciness, acidity and brightness to the wine, with the Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure and deep dark fruit to the finish. Our goal at PALAZZO is to make wines of outstanding quality, depth, balance and structure. . . that exhibit both ‘power and elegance’ on the palate. . . and that pair well with a broad range of foods. That will always be the standard! It is my hope, that my wine will bring laughter and enjoyment to people's lives . . . and zest and harmony to everyone's dining tables!
Anthony Carroll - Master Coffee Taster - "Starbucks"
When Anthony Carroll isn’t pulling his favorite ingredients together to develop a flavorful new recipe or strapped to his snowboard shredding double black diamonds in the Cascade Mountains, he’s using his keen sense of taste and passion for adventure to develop new coffee blends for Starbucks Coffee Company. Slurping and spitting is part of Anthony’s daily grind as Starbucks green coffee quality manager. In fact, he tastes up to 100 cups of coffee per day – smelling and tasting each bean the way a sommelier samples fine wine. All told, Anthony will taste approximately 25,000 cups of coffee annually as one of only a handful of Starbucks master tasters around the world.

"Fashion is a great indicator for whimsical touches as well as pragmatic necessities," says Yvonne. "It puts me in better touch with guest expectations. With fashion I find a kaleidoscope of ideas." Yvonne credits her father and San Francisco real estate mogul, Frank Lembi, for her knowledge, drive and energy. Lembi is the founder of San Francisco's Skyline Realty/CitiApartments, the second-largest owner of rental units in city.
