Jane Grote Abell is the Chairman of Donatos Pizza, her family’s 50-year-old business, which grosses $170 million a year. It’s one of the most lucrative pizza chains in the country The home base for the company is Columbus Ohio.
At 18 her dad bought a pizza place in 1963, and her grandfather bought the name Donatos. She recalls her brother, sister and herself helping to make the dough – while her grandmother made the meatballs and the sausage. Says Jane, “I remember my father saying, “Donatos is going to be around the world someday.”
She attended Ohio State University and then began working for the company. She’s never had a job anywhere else. When McDonald’s wanted to buy the whole company, they decided they would sell. But then it was a different company, it was corporate. When their stock went down they decided they should focus on themselves so they bought the company back. She was in charge of lots of different areas. Posing as Kathy Cooper, Jane wanted to make sure that their family legacy was alive in their stores.
