Dr. Leatherman Tells Us About America's Top 10 Beaches!

A professor of coastal research at Miami’s Florida International University, Dr. Leatherman is one of the world’s leading authorities on coastal sciences, having authored or edited more than 16 books and written hundreds of journal articles on the subject. His much-anticipated yearly ranking of America’s top beaches has become a media favorite, with past contenders including gorgeous strands of shoreline in places like Hawaii, the California coast, the rocky cliffs of the Pacific Northwest, all the way to the windswept shores of the Carolinas and the exclusive hideaways of the Hamptons.

With more than 90,000 miles of American coastline to scour, it’s no easy task to find the best beach. Fifty criteria are used to evaluate beaches, which include water and sand quality as well as safety and environmental management. According to his website, “His annual list of America’s Top 10 Beaches is to the travel and tourism industry what the Oscar is to the movie industry.” It’s tough work, but someone’s gotta do it. The Oprah Winfrey Show profiled him for having one the best jobs in the nation.
