DR. PATRICIA A. DORN - PREVENTING, DIAGNOSING AND TREATING HEARING LOSS FOR OUR VETERANS THROUGH VA RESEARCH

Hearing loss affects more than 28 million Americans, including more than half of those over age 75. When combined with tinnitus, which is a ringing, buzzing, or other type of noise that originates in the head, hearing issues are the most frequently found service-connected disability among American Veterans.

Some hearing loss can be reversed through surgery or medication. In other cases, hearing loss is permanent, but can be reduced through the use of hearing aids. Though almost all people with hearing loss could be helped by hearing aids, only about one in five uses them. In addition, some Veterans score normally on hearing tests but have difficulty understanding speech. This condition, called central auditory processing disorder, is often associated with blast exposure.

VA researchers, engineers, and clinicians are studying ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat hearing loss. They are also addressing a wide range of technological, medical, rehabilitative, and social issues associated with tinnitus and blast exposure. VA supports designated research programs, the RR&D National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) in Portland, Ore., and the Auditory and Vestibular Dysfunction program in Mountain Home, TN. In these programs, researchers focus their attention exclusively on hearing loss and associated conditions.

9/30 RICKEY TROMBETTA STANCLIFF, TROMBETTA FAMILY WINES, THE 2016 PETALUMA GAP WIND TO WINE FESTIVAL, RICH LITTLE, “LITTLE BY LITTLE: PEOPLE I’VE KNOWN AND BEEN”

RICKEY TROMBETTA  STANCLIFF – CEO, TROMBETTA FAMILY WINES – SHE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE 2016 PETALUMA GAP WIND TO WINE FESTIVAL

RICKEY TROMBETTA STANCLIFF
My family was food centric. Not unusual for an Italian family. But interestingly enough my parents did not drink alcohol as a rule and this included wine. My father would occasionally have a glass of white wine with dinner but that indulgence was rather spotty at best. My jobs as a child were to work in the kitchen with my mother and in the garden with my father. My father was a master at grafting fruit trees. We had an apple tree that had three varieties of apples on it. Since I was the youngest I was at home alone with them and it became part of my routine to shop for the vegetables and visit the family butcher. Every night Mom and I would prepare dinner together using the fresh ingredients that I had shopped for earlier. Growing up in Sonoma County in an Italian family one would draw the conclusion that we would be more main stream wine aficionados especially since so many of my parent’s friends were wine makers or owners. Mom and Dad loved to entertain and there were many gatherings around the dining room table. They served wine to their guests but did not partake. I can still hear the laughter ringing from that dining room.

A new path was opened for me many years ago when my husband Roger introduced me to coworkers gathered at a friend’s home to learn about making wine. Over the years as this group grew in their winemaking skills it brought to light something so obvious. As we concluded each harvest we would gather with food to share, wine to drink, and stories to tell. The bounty of the feast began to grow as we paired food with the wines. As our curiosity grew about wine Roger and I took courses at our local Junior College and U.C. Davis. Roger grew up in Connecticut. His father would share great Burgundies at Sunday night dinner. Roger grew up learning how to read and distinguish French Burgundy labels and wines.

One very warm summer day in August of 1998 I met my future teacher and friend through a mutual friend and grape grower. PAUL HOBBS breezed through the doors at Kunde Winery where he was leasing space, wearing his Bermuda shorts, a polo shirt and red high-topped Converse sneakers. Paul invited me in to taste some Chardonnay in barrels down in the caves. Later over lunch we discussed Paul’s new project, his first soon to be estate vineyard he had just purchased in Sebastopol. I was hired as the event planner for the celebration party he was arranging that November. Paul suggested to get to know each other better we go out the following week to visit some of the vineyards where he contracted fruit. It’s about an hours drive from our West County meeting spot to Napa, which gave us plenty of time to talk. As Paul learned of my passion for wine he shared more of his philosophy on vineyard management and winemaking. I was soaking all of this invaluable information up like a thirsty sponge.

The event planning turned into harvest help. Punch downs at Kunde where Paul was renting space to make his wines, and riding on the back end of tractor-trailer pulling leaves and botrytised fruit out of the macro bins became a regular occurrence. This led to working in the vineyards along side Paul and then full on harvest help for many years. My love affair with food and wine was blooming. Fresh produce from my huge vegetable garden was an integral part of our nightly feasts. Learning new techniques in the kitchen gave me confidence to reach out of my comfort zone. Roger and I are so grateful that we have been living a lifestyle of fabulous food and wine every day. The whole family joins in preparing food. Michael, our eldest, is a fabulous cook who pushes himself to replicate dishes he’s tasted and experiment with our garden’s bounty and Erica, our daughter, joined me in the vineyard at an early age.

Roger, my husband has always believed that I could do anything I set out to accomplish (he’s always been my biggest fan). He was willing to bet on it. We discussed starting our own brand for many years. I continued my education at UC Davis completing the PR and Marketing certificated program as well as Intro to Winemaking taught by Dr. Carole Meredith. The decision was made – let’s start our own brand. We determined that it would be called Trombetta Family Wines in tribute to my father. Paul graciously agreed to be our Consulting Winemaker. I could not have asked for a better team to turn our dream into reality. There is a lot of love in this wine. And now we've come full circle with Erica taking the reins as Winemaker.

Trombetta Family Wines first vintage of Pinot Noir is from the GAP'S CROWN VINEYARD located on the western slope of Sonoma Mountain. We have selected three clones of Pinot Noir that we feel exemplify the rich minerality, soils and cool weather from the Petaluma Gap. From bud break until harvest I walk our blocks of the vineyard internalizing the seasonal changes. This vineyard is pristinely maintained which the fruit exemplifies. At harvest I work the night picks alongside the crew. Armed with my blue shop towels I ensure that each macro bin is clean and dry before the fruit arrives. Leaves are painstakingly pulled along with any botrytised fruit.

TROMBETTA FAMILY WINES is at the beginning of our joyous journey. Our hope is that you will join us as we travel this road.

LEGENDARY IMPRESSIONIST, ENTERTAINER OF A THOUSAND VOICES AND TROPICANA HEADLINER RICH LITTLE – TALKS ABOUT HIS CAREER, LAS VEGAS SHOW AND NEW BOOK, “LITTLE BY LITTLE: PEOPLE I’VE KNOWN AND BEEN”

ABOUT THE VEGAS SHOW:
Rich Little Live

Breaking News – Show Has Been Extended through Jan. 2017!
Renowned comedian and impersonator Rich Little returns to the Las Vegas Strip with the debut of “Rich Little Live,” a new autobiographical one-man show. “Rich Little Live” brings to life many of the beloved actors, singers and politicians that Little has known throughout his career that spans more than 50 years, from his television days in Canada to his first United States break on “The Judy Garland Show” to the present. His spot-on impersonations, along with jokes, songs, videos and personal stories combine to make this a must-see show.

Show Information
Show Time: 7pm Daily (Dark Monday and Friday; additional blackout dates may apply)
Location: Laugh Factory comedy club

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Little by Little: People I've Known and Been

"How did I become an impersonator? Perhaps my mother was conceived by a Zerox machine!" So, how did a kid from Ottawa, Canada, growing up in the 50's become an impersonator? No one in our family had ever been in show business. No one ever had "show business" yearnings. My father was a doctor. My mother was a housewife. So where did it come from? I've often asked myself this question. I didn't know the answer, but I did love the movies. As a boy, I would go every weekend, sometimes staying to see the show twice. Just going to the movies and getting so involved in the story-telling and the characters made me want to be that person up on the screen; never dreaming that I could turn it into a career.

The glory days of Hollywood and their icons, like no other, have remained as indelible images in our hearts and minds for decades. I, like many, idolized these giants of the screen and comedy, but was so fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet, work with and get to know many of them along the way during my career. From the genius of Jack Benny, the unmatched humor of George Burns, the debonair, handsome Cary Grant, the unforgettable John Wayne, the king of late night hosts Johnny Carson, and the former actor-turned-President Ronald Reagan to name a few. In this gem of a book are insights into the likes of many of these great people I've had the privilege and fortune to meet and imitate, shining new light on our beloved stars. This is really not a biography, but more of a humorous glimpse of the people I've impersonated and some of the funny stories that happened along the way.

BRUCE CAKEBREAD - PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, CAKEBREAD CELLARS

Bruce Cakebread is president and chief operating officer of Cakebread Cellars since 2002. Bruce first studied Pomology (Tree Fruits) at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. When he decided to enter the family business he transferred to the Viticulture and Enology program at the University of California at Davis, where in 1978, he studied Enology and Viticulture.

After working alongside his father since the winery was founded in 1973, Bruce assumed the winemaking position in 1979, overseeing all vineyard operations and winemaking duties until 2002 when he became president and COO.

Discussing the Cakebread family’s philosophy of winemaking over the past 40 years, Bruce says, “We are very fortunate to have an excellent collection of vineyards and have worked alongside some of the best growers in Napa Valley for many years to produce consistently high quality wines over the past 40 years. These great vineyards, plus the fact that we have had only three winemakers over these forty years (Jack, myself and now Julianne for the past ten years), allows us to produce consistency in quality and our balanced style of elegant and complex wines with a fine finish that fits seamlessly into any meal or any occasion.”

Bruce is currently the President of the Napa Valley College Foundation Board, serves on the Viticulture and Enology Executive Leadership Board at UC Davis, is an alternate on the Napa County Flood Control District, and is past President of the Board of Napa Valley Vintners Association, serving in 2010 and in 2013.

Continuity and stability are bedrock values for Cakebread Cellars and our wines. Bruce Cakebread, formerly winemaker and now president of Cakebread Cellars, is the guardian of the commitment to quality his parents made at the dawn of Cakebread Cellars. This ethos is also evident in the long-term tenures of winemaker Julianne Laks, who has been with Cakebread Cellars 26 years, and cellarmaster Brian Lee, a 25-year veteran of the winery.

Julianne and Brian, along with Director of Viticulture, Toby Halkovich, have played key roles in enhancing wine quality at Cakebread Cellars through the adoption and implementation of innovative winegrowing strategies and technologies. Over the years, these have included night-harvesting to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition; whole-cluster pressing of white grapes to enhance juice and wine freshness and varietal intensity; and aging Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay in barrel on its spent yeast lees – a traditional French practice known as sur lie which produces a very rich, creamy style of Chardonnay. Julianne and Brian have become experts at matching the right barrels with particular lots of wine to ensure a seamless blend of oak and fruit character.

Additionally, choosing just the right equipment is also important. In recent years, Cakebread Cellars has acquired a new, state-of-the-art destemmer, berry sorter and juice chemistry analyzer, and is investigating new techniques for generating and conserving energy. (Cakebread Cellars is a green-certified winery, and its vineyards are green-certified and either farmed organically or sustainably.)

ESTATE VINEYARDS

Cakebread Cellars has vineyard properties located throughout Napa Valley and a location in the Anderson Valley. The winery ranches surrounding the production facility in Rutherford are where it all began. The first 22 acre parcel was purchased in 1972. Over the years, the family has continued to acquire additional vineyard parcels throughout Napa Valley and the North Coast. Today, the winery owns 13 sites totaling 1100 acres, 560 of which are currently planted. This judicious acquisition and development of vineyard land enables us to more completely control the quality of the fruit we grow and the wines we make.

LIFESTYLE EXPERT HARRIETTE COLE - THE IMPORTANCE OF SAYING “HELLO” ON GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY, AND EVERY DAY

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAYING “HELLO” ON GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY, AND EVERY DAY

Plus Tips on How to be More Connected to your Community

When President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation for Good Neighbor Day in 1978, the country was working to mend fences and build relationships among community members in the midst of turbulent times. Fast forward to 2016 and being a good neighbor is more important than ever – but what does it mean to be a good neighbor, and how do you go about becoming one?

Lifestyle Expert Harriette Cole will share tips on how to spark conversations, meet your neighbors and participate in Good Neighbor Day (and tips for every day). Harriette can share insights from the State Farm “State of Neighbors” survey that was recently released. She’ll discuss how technology, changing demographics and generational and cultural differences are reshaping community landscapes.

Harriette can discuss tips on what to do (and what not to do) when you are meeting new neighbors, as well as highlights from the survey, including:

  • Six in ten say that helping a neighbor out with an unexpected need is a trait of a good neighbor.
  • Generational differences: As Millennials continue to buy homes the definition of what it means to be a good
  • neighbor will continue to evolve.
  • Millennials were far more likely than their older counterparts to include ‘socializing’ as a good neighbor trait – yet they are least likely to have engaged in face-to-face conversations in the last month.
  • Cultural differences:
  • African-Americans are more likely than others to say it is important for neighbors to come together and socialize (66 percent among African Americans vs. 58 percent average).
  • When it comes to using technology in neighborhoods, Hispanic Americans are among the most likely to use social media when communicating or connecting with their neighbors (27 percent).
  • Say Hello: Welcoming is important, but not happening.
  • The majority (75 percent) of neighbors say it is important to welcome new neighbors, but only 41 percent say they were welcomed when they moved in.
  • Only 46 percent actually welcomed someone new into the neighborhood.
  • Thirty-six percent of people are embarrassed that they know so few of their neighbors’ names.
  • Connecting: Neighbors across all demographics believe it’s important to socialize, but they may not know how or want the responsibility of organizing.
  • While six in ten say it is important for neighbors to come together and socialize, only half participate in neighborhood activities and just over a quarter have helped organize a neighborhood event. Surprisingly, men are more likely than women to organize gatherings.

9/27 ROGER HOROWITZ, KOSHER USA: HOW COKE BECAME KOSHER AND OTHER TALES OF MODERN FOOD, DANIEL SIEBERG, GOOGLE SEARCH TRENDS EXPERT

ROGER HOROWITZ, FOOD HISTORIAN AND AUTHOR OF KOSHER USA: HOW COKE BECAME KOSHER AND OTHER TALES OF MODERN FOOD

JUST IN TIME FOR THE JEWISH NEW YEAR (Oct 3-4)

Kosher USA: How Coke Became Kosher and Other Tales of Modern Food

Kosher USA follows the fascinating journey of kosher food through the modern industrial food system. It recounts how iconic products such as Coca-Cola and Jell-O tried to become kosher; the contentious debates among rabbis over the incorporation of modern science into Jewish law; how Manischewitz wine became the first kosher product to win over non-Jewish consumers (principally African Americans); the techniques used by Orthodox rabbinical organizations to embed kosher requirements into food manufacturing; and the difficulties encountered by kosher meat and other kosher foods that fell outside the American culinary consensus.

Kosher USA is filled with big personalities, rare archival finds, and surprising influences: the Atlanta rabbi Tobias Geffen, who made Coke kosher; the lay chemist and kosher-certification pioneer Abraham Goldstein; the kosher-meat magnate Harry Kassel; and the animal-rights advocate Temple Grandin, a strong supporter of shechita, or Jewish slaughtering practice. By exploring the complex encounter between ancient religious principles and modern industrial methods, Kosher USAadds a significant chapter to the story of Judaism's interaction with non-Jewish cultures and the history of modern Jewish American life as well as American foodways.

ABOUT ROGER:
Roger Horowitz is an historian of American business, technology, and labor and an expert on the nation’s food. He has written widely about the consumption and production of meat in America, and admits to being quite fond of eating all varieties of meat himself. Most recently his research has turned to kosher food, incited by powerful personal connections and intellectual curiosity.

His day job is Director of the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library, a long title which more simply means he creates programs to encourage use of Hagley’s world-class research collections. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Business History Conference, the leading academic organizations for business historians. When offered the opportunity, he teaches classes at the University of Delaware, most recently on the history of capitalism. Through these responsibilities he has had the enormous fun of engaging with, and learning from, thousands of interesting scholars and students from all over the world.

Born and raised in New York City, and having spent plenty of time in Chicago and other Midwestern cities, he now lives on 19 acres of beautiful land (albeit with a long steep driveway) in southern Pennsylvania with two children, his wife, several dogs and cats, near a third child who is in college, and with horses and deer for neighbors. When he can get away to the family vacation house in Shelter Island, New York, he is in his kayak as much as possible.

LAURA TORRES - NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES LATINO HISTORY AND CULTURE

NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES LATINO HISTORY AND CULTURE

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th

Our national parks reflect our country’s diverse people and shared history which continues to be written. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th provides an opportunity to celebrate Latino history and culture and to recognize the many contributions of Latinos across our country and within our National Park System.  In 2012, during Hispanic Heritage Month, President Obama designated the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene, California which was the first national park site to honor a contemporary Latino.

Additional places within our National Park System related to Latino history and culture include: the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, CA, the Coronado National Memorial in Hereford, AZ, the Dry Tortugas National Park in Key West, Florida, the Presidio in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, CA, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in San Antonio, Texas and San Juan National Historic Site in Puerto Rico.

By honoring the people and stories that are shared in these national park sites, the National Parks Conservation Association is calling for continued actions to increase diversity in our 413 national park sites. The NPCA calls upon our members of Congress to pass legislation to also designate the Cesar Chavez National Historical Park in California and Arizona to preserve the complete story of César Chávez and the farmworkers movement. The national historical park would include the current Cesar E. Chavez National Monument as well as 40 Acres and the Filipino Hall in Delano, California, The Santa Rita Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and McDonnell Hall in San Jose, California.

On Thursday, September 15th, NPCA’s Laura Torres will be available to talk more about NPCA’s commitment to diversity and preservation of Latino history and Culture in our National Parks.   Laura will also discuss how legislation would allow America’s greatest storytellers, the National Park Service, to care for these sites as well as share stories of the region’s history and rich culture.

HEATHER MURAN - SLO WINE COUNTRY ASSOCIATION - HARVEST ON THE COAST (NOV. 4-6)

The wineries of SLO Wine Country boast an average distance of just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in prevailing marine conditions that are among the most pronounced of any wine region in California.

SLO Wine Country includes two small adjoining American Viticultural Areas—the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley—and other nearby winegrowing areas.  Each of these areas shares a unifying proximity to the ocean, as well as to each other. Collectively, these growing conditions forge a unifying wine quality that is native to SLO Wine Country:

Cool
The reliable cooling effect of the nearby Pacific Ocean ensures a long growing season, enabling the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness and natural balance. Cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir excel in the heart of SLO Wine Country, and even the warmest areas benefit from considerable marine influence.

Consistent
The ocean proximity also exerts a moderating effect on the climate, minimizing temperature swings so that growing conditions are rarely hot or cold. The result is an extraordinarily steady growing season that fosters balanced ripening and consistent quality from vintage to vintage.

Complex
The imprint of the ocean is also evident in SLO Wine Country's uncommonly complex soils, which are frequently riddled with ancient sea fossils. Soil variation enables the winegrower to mix and match varietals to specific soil profiles, or to add more "colors" to the palette of a single varietal, heightening overall quality and complexity.
