PATSY MCGAUGHY – MARKETING DIRECTOR, NAPA VALLEY VINTNERS - AUCTION NAPA VALLEY RE-CAP

Auction Napa Valley Raises $15.8 Million for Community Health and Children’s Education

New records set for single Live Auction lot and Barrel and E-Auction totals

Four beautiful days in Napa Valley inspired a bountiful $15.8 million in proceeds from Auction Napa Valley, the Napa Valley Vintners’ (NVV) annual charity fundraiser. Auction Napa Valley funding enriches the lives of more than 90,000 clients annually in Napa County in the areas of community health and children’s education.

In the past year alone, the NVV has invested $23 million in the Napa Valley community. Since its inception in 1981, the NVV has given more than $145 million in Auction Napa Valley proceeds to Napa County nonprofits.

Auction Napa Valley 2015
This year’s Auction Napa Valley began with vintner-hosted Welcome Parties on Thursday evening and continued on Friday with the Napa Valley Barrel Auction at HALL St. Helena. Some 2,000 guests sampled 120 coveted Napa Valley wines, nearly 90% from the much-anticipated 2013 vintage, directly from the barrel, while having a chance to spend time with the winemakers and vintners themselves. The Napa Valley Barrel Auction raised a record $1.9 million through the sale of these Napa Valley wine futures. Friday’s guests also strolled the art-filled grounds at HALL, while enjoying sips of 100 current release Napa Valley wines and tasty bites from more than 40 of Napa Valley’s celebrated chefs and food purveyors.

One of Friday’s most crowd-pleasing moments was the first subtle, then enthralling flash mob performance of "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven’s immortal Ninth Symphony, a gift from the owners of HALL St. Helena, Kathryn and Craig Hall, and produced by Festival del Sole. More than 80 instrumentalists and vocalists from throughout the Bay area were conducted by Ming Luke poised atop an uprighted wine barrel.

Saturday’s Live Auction Celebration at Meadowood Napa Valley saw 850 guests enjoying a wine country marketplace lunch, composed by Chef Michael Chiarello, before gathering in the spacious, clear-span white tent for a rousing auction of 51 extraordinary lots of Napa Valley wines and special experiences.

The Chair’s Lot, donated by Honorary Auction Chairs, the Opus One Team, included a 35-year vertical wine collection of Opus One magnums and a two-week tour and visits with celebrated winemaking families in Napa Valley and throughout Europe. The Chair’s lot first doubled and then tripled selling to three different bidders and raising $2.4 million, becoming the charity wine event’s top grossing lot of all time.

In a surprise appearance, singer-songwriter John Legend performed his hit "All of Me" immediately prior to the sale of Live Auction Lot 31, a collaboration between Legend and Raymond Vineyards. The lot, which includes six etched bottles of Napa Valley wine and a dinner party for 30 graced by a private performance by Legend, sold for $850,000.

As a prelude to the last lot of the day, Fund-A-Need, where bidders give differing amounts of money purely to benefit the needs of children in Napa County, the crowd quieted to watch five-year old Mia dance touchingly on stage with her father. Mia, who lives with her family in Napa County, was helped in part by Auction Napa Valley funding to receive treatment for spina bifida when she was just a toddler.

As the Live Auction ended and guests strolled to a twilight dinner by renowned international Chef Pierre Gagnaire, Auction Napa Valley’s online E-Auction, which had opened on May 31, came to a close, netting a new record of $612,500.

The Next Auction Napa Valley takes place June 2-5, 2016. Tickets go on sale in late January 2016.

PIERRICK BOUQUET - CO-FOUNDER OF THE LA NUIT EN ROSÉ FESTIVAL - 6/21 AT THE EXCLUSIVE SKYBAR AT THE MONDRIAN HOTEL

La Nuit en Rosé is the world’s first Food & Wine Festival dedicated to Rosé Wine and Rosé Champagne, bringing together the largest gathering of rosé wine producers, rosé wine lovers, chefs and restaurants. Anything but a typical wine tasting, La Nuit En Rosé is a full culinary experience and a lavish lifestyle celebration.

After the overwhelming sold-out success of the inaugural La Nuit en Rosé event held in June 2014 in New York City, the festival expands in 2015 beyond New York to Miami and Los Angeles – spreading the love of all things pink!

With more than 85 rosé wine labels from 60 wineries in 10 countries –– represented at the 2014 event, La Nuit en Rosé was the largest-ever gathering of rosé producers in the world. More than 2,300 people attended the two-day festival where they were treated to four separate experiences each hosted on a luxurious yacht along the Hudson River.

The 2015 season started off in Miami, from January 30 to February 1, 2015 at the recently opened Miami Beach EDITION, one of South Beach’s most affluent hotels. La Nuit En Rosé will then take place in Los Angeles on June 21st and in New York from June 25th to June 27th 2015. Each event will feature up to 150 Rosé wines and Rosé Champagne with representatives pouring and discussing the wines, themed food stations, lounge areas, photo booths, live entertainment, dancing and more.

As a novelty in 2015, each event will start with a VIP Rosé Wine Pairing Dinner, presented by the Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and will be followed by both media/trade and consumer daytime and evening events. The VIP dinners are specifically designed to elevate the experience by showcasing the beauty of the wines alongside an elegant dinner and in the company of some of the people behind the world’s finest rosé wines.

CHARLES FLEMING – AUTHOR, SECRET WALKS: A WALKING GUIDE TO THE HIDDEN TRAILS OF LOS ANGELES

Secret Walks: A Walking Guide to the Hidden Trails of Los Angeles is a sequel to the popular Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles, and features another collection of exciting urban walks through parks, canyons, and neighborhoods unknown and unseen by most Angelinos. Each walk is rated for duration, distance, and difficulty, and is accompanied by a map.

The walks, like those in Secret Stairs, are filled with fascinating factoids about historical landmarks—the original Bat Cave from Batman, the lake where Opie learned to fish on The Andy Griffith Show, or the storage barn for one of L.A. s oldest wineries. The book also highlights the people who made the landmarks famous: the infamous water engineer William Mulholland; the convicted murderer and philanthropist Colonel Griffith J. Griffith; Charles Lummis, who walked from Cincinnati to Los Angeles to take a job on the L.A. Times; and tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, who dug canals to drain the marshes south of Santa Monica and create his American “Venice.

Written in the entertainingly informed style that has made Secret Stairs a Los Angeles Times best-seller, Secret Walks is the perfect book for the walker eager to explore but tired of the crowds at Runyon Canyon or Temescal Park.

ABOUT CHARLES FLEMING:
Charles Fleming writes about automobiles, motorcycles and alternative energy sources for the Los Angeles Times’ Business section. He also writes the urban hiking column LA Walks. A former staff writer for Newsweek, Variety and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he is the author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller "High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Culture of Excess," the New York Times bestseller "My Lobotomy," and "Secret Stairs, A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles."

HANK CARDELLO - HOW SALES OF LOWER-CALORIE FOODS ARE IMPACTING SUPERMARKET STORES BOTTOM LINE

Report examines business impact of supermarkets increasing sales of lower-calorie choices. On Tuesday, June 9th, the Hudson Institute will release a new report evaluating for the first time how sales of lower-calorie foods and sales are impacting supermarket stores bottom lines. The study examines shifts in supermarket sales based on data from 2009 to 2013 for 202 individual food and beverage categories for the three largest retailers in the U.S, accounting for 45 percent of the U.S. supermarket industry. Researchers categorized a wide range of supermarket items, such as cereal, pasta, fruits, vegetables, packaged meals, milk and snacks.

Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the report also looked at the foods and beverages that contribute the most calories to the diets of children and teens and compared the sales of stores in food deserts, areas with traditionally limited access to healthy, affordable foods, with those not in food deserts.

The report will be released at the Food Marketing Institute Connect Conference in Chicago, IL. For more information, visit www.obesity-solutions.org.

06/08 ALI BERLOW, THE FOOD ACTIVIST HANDBOOK, ELIZABETH WERNER

ALI BERLOW – AUTHOR, THE FOOD ACTIVIST HANDBOOK

Berlow believes that since we all eat, we should all have access to healthy, whole, fresh food.  She offers the tools, and the inspiration, to make a difference in how and what we eat. Her vast knowledge is accumulated from government programs, nonprofits, interfaith organizations, businesses, and individuals alike. You’ll meet farmers and fishermen, restaurant owners and school cooks, politicians and just plain folks, all of whom are trying to improve the food served in their homes and communities.

In every chapter, she suggests actions large and small that we can undertake to bring healthy foods to more people. THE FOOD ACTIVIST HANDBOOK offers advice on preserving land for community gardens, creating a community composting program, growing a kitchen garden, contributing to a food pantry, planting and harvesting public fruit trees, getting local food into the public schools, teaching kids to cook or starting a farmer’s market.

Small steps can create big changes in your community’s food quality and food security, helping to get more healthy food to more people and support a better food system. Ali Berlow shows you dozens of things that anyone can do, from creating a neighborhood kitchen for preserving fresh food to mapping farmland, connecting food pantries with food producers, starting a school garden, and organizing a community composting initiative. Every action you take can help keep farmers on the land and family farms intact, keep money in the local economy, reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation, and preserve local landscapes. If you’ve had enough of E. coli scares, disappearing farmland, pesticide problems, and hunger in your community, this inspiring book will show you exactly how one person really can make a difference.

LEADING NEUROLOGIST JOINS BETH BATTAGLINO OF HEALTHY WOMEN TO REVEAL NEW CHRONIC MIGRAINE SCREENING TOOL DESIGNED TO HELP PATIENTS COMMUNICATE THEIR HEADACHE SYMPTOMS AND IMPACT ON THEIR LIFE TO THEIR DOCTORS

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS ARE IMPACTED BY CHRONIC MIGRAINE—AN OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED CONDITION, WHICH BURDENS PATIENTS AND FAMILIES

Chronic Migraine* impacts approximately 3.2 million Americans today yet many people don’t know that they have it. As a result, it can remain undiagnosed due to lack of education and awareness. It has been estimated that approximately 80 percent of those who meet the clinical definition of Chronic Migraine have not received an accurate diagnosis.

Although Chronic Migraine occurs in both men and women, women are three times more likely than men to have migraines. Recognizing symptoms and receiving a diagnosis early on is particularly important, because according to new research, The impact of this debilitating condition expands beyond the patients themselves to family, often resulting in cancelled vacation plans and reduced time with partners and children.

Now there is a tool available that can help patients communicate their headache symptoms and the impact that these symptoms have on their lives to their doctor. Developed by a team of headache experts, the ID-Chronic Migraine (ID-CM) Screening Tool is the only tool developed using the most recent headache classification guidelines.

Beth Battaglino, President & CEO of HealthyWomen and Dr. Susan Broner, Neurologist and Medical Director at the Manhattan Headache Center, are here to kick off Migraine Awareness Month and help patients understand if their headaches might actually be Chronic Migraine. ABOUT PAM AND CROCKER & STAR:
Pam Starr has been the co-owner, manager and winemaker of Crocker & Starr since its inception in 1997 when she helped resurrect the vineyards on the Crocker Estate in St. Helena and established a winery to create world-class wines. After toiling as a winery employee for 18 years, Pam’s transformation at a relatively young age into owner, manager and winemaker was unique and remarkable. It required a special mix of skill, passion and dedication. All of which describe Pam Starr.

Pam’s love affair with winemaking began as a harvest intern for Sonoma Cutrer in Sonoma after graduating from the University of California at Davis in 1984 with a degree in Fermentation Science. Headed down a different path, the daughter of an orthopedic surgeon who was planning to go to dental school quickly switched gears. Attracted by the fast pace, the pleasures of working the land and the wine itself, Pam knew she’d found her calling. “I was simply smitten – the way one is when falling madly in love. Winemaking is mysterious, it’s sexy, it’s magical.” And it’s been her life since.

After the internship, Pam worked for Edna Valley Vineyard in San Luis Obispo stacking barrels for a season. Her dream of becoming a winemaker began to take shape. For the next six years she was an enologist and assistant winemaker for Carmenet Winery in Sonoma, a job that taught her how to run a winery from cellar to bottle. In 1991, she became the winemaker for Spottswoode Vineyard & Winery in Napa Valley where she worked until she and Charlie Crocker established Crocker & Starr and she built the foundation of the business. At the same time Crocker & Starr opened its doors, Pam began wine consulting for Adastra Vineyard in the Carneros, Gemstone Vineyard in Yountville and Garric Cellars of Calistoga, among others.

Passionate about translating terroir into wine, Pam is known for her distinctive Bordeauxstyle blends that express a deep sense of place. For this enthusiastic and inspired winemaker who views her job as translating soil into wine, great wine must taste of the sun, of the earth it comes from and of the place it grows.

Pam is a member of the Napa Valley Vintners, Appellation St. Helena, American Society of Enology and Viticulture, Concierge Alliance Napa Valley and Wine Entre Femme, an international consortium of women winemakers. She is married, lives in Napa and embraces mountain biking, scuba diving, water skiing, sailing, gardening and motorcycling wine roads with her husband. Pam’s dog Griffin, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, is her loyal vineyard companion.

SURVIVAL EXPERT, AUTHOR AND TV PERSONALITY CREEK STEWART TALKS ABOUT THE SECOND SEASON OF THE POPULAR REALITY SERIES "FAT GUYS IN THE WOODS."

Survival expert-author-TV personality Creek Stewart talks about the second season of the popular reality series "Fat Guys in the Woods."
The Weather Channel’s popular survival series, “Fat Guys in the Woods,” returns for its second season with new locations, even wilder weather conditions, and tougher challenges.

Each week, groups of three average Joes will join host and survival expert, Creek Stewart, in the woods to learn the art and science of outdoor survival while battling the threats of Mother Nature. They will be armed with only the most basic of tools, so if they can’t successfully build a fire, they will have to deal with the cold. If they can’t successfully hunt or forage for food, they will be hungry. If they can’t successfully build a shelter, they will sleep on the ground.

Tune in this season as our average Joes dine on everything from tree jerky and cactus to bone marrow and scorpions. They will attempt to start fires using materials that range from birch bark to tampons. And, for shelter, our average Joes will put their creativity to the test by building structures using Mother Nature’s supplies like ocotillo plants, moss and pine trees. Highlighting different weather extremes and conditions, “Fat Guys in the Woods” season two was filmed in the following locations:
• Drummond Island, MI

Raising happy, self-confident kids is the goal of every parent, but doing that in the age of social media has complicated an already challenging job. The digital component of a kid’s life has amplified common teen insecurities around appearance and peer pressure, causing some parents to feel desperate to find help.

In an effort to connect better with kids, The Teen Confidence Survey polled teenagers ages 13-17 mothers of teens ages 13-17 and looked at opinions surrounding key teen issues like teasing, peer pressure and the impact that acne, braces and body changes has on teen self confidence. Highlights from the survey include:
• 40 percent feel their appearance is being judged more closely on social media than in person
• 94 percent of teens think their appearance influences their popularity

06/01 JODY LEVOS, LEAPFROG, VIRGINIE SAVERYS, AVIGNONESI

JODY LEVOS, PHD DIRECTOR OF LEARNING FOR LEAPFROG - SHOWS HOW PARENTS CAN TEACH THEIR KIDS THE LOVE OF LEARNING

Learning Expert Reveals How to Turn Summer Brain Drain into Summer Brain Gain
Research shows that children experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities over the summer. As much as two months of learning can be lost during those long summer months, which is why it’s extremely important to keep children’s brains active and challenged year round. With that said, LeapFrog is launching Summer Camp, where parents can sign up for 8 weeks of free printables, activities, articles, videos, and more, that help kids stay engaged and learning over the summer. Each week presents a different theme, with materials covering skills in math, reading, science, creativity, and more! Dr. LeVos will discuss Summer Camp and how parents can help reduce that summer brain drain and instead, turn it into summer brain gain.

ABOUT JODY:
As LeapFrog’s Director of Learning, Jody works on products across all platforms to teach in developmentally appropriate ways using research-based techniques. Before joining LeapFrog, she was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, a researcher and instructor, and a math textbook author. She is a contributing author to The Encyclopedia on Early Childhood. She is also the proud mother of two LeapFrog-aged boys. For more information about her program to help kids learn, visit www.leapfrog.com/parentguide.

Jody LeVos, PhD, is one of the top experts in the field of child learning, and she believe that with technology and a little parental help, kids can be taught to love learning at an early age.   On May 29ND, Dr. LeVos will discuss an exciting new summer program and some new devices that will inspire and educate children.   Research shows that almost half of youngsters entering kindergarten arrive at school unprepared.  At the same time, research shows that on average children lose two months of learning during the summer months.

VIRGINIE SAVERYS – OWNER, AVIGNONESI

The winery is named after the Avignonesi family, the founders of the original estate.
Constant research and development aimed at expressing the true character of the Montepulciano terroir has, over time, earned the winery a well-deserved place among the flagship producers of Tuscany.
In 2009, Avignonesi was acquired by Virginie Saverys who has since introduced organic and biodynamic farming methods to craft distinct, genuine wines with an even stronger character, and has acquired additional vineyards and a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in the Montepulciano appellation.

We believe that the life force of the earth and the uniqueness of our terroir are at the heart of our brand. Avignonesi is reborn from the soil of our vineyards with each vintage in wines that mirror the subtle flavours of the site and the special traits of each year. Our wines express the richness and beauty of the Montepulciano territory. We respect the heritage of Montepulciano, where Sangiovese wines have been produced for centuries, and we wish to contribute to its future by being the finest representative of its heritage that we can be.

We respect the innate character of each wine and seek to follow its natural evolutionary path from the soil to the cellar and - finally - to the bottle.

ABOUT VIRGINIE:
Virginie was born in Ghent, Belgium and graduated in law from the University of Paris in 1983. Virginie was brought up in a family that always enjoyed fine wines and, as a wine lover, decided to invest in the Avignonesi winery in 2007, after having retired from her highly successful legal career and moving to Tuscany. In 2009 she bought the whole of Avignonesi with the intention of taking a winery already recognised for its quality, innovative research and experimentation to a new level of excellence.

She is a strong believer in organic products and homeopathic medicine, so converting the winery to sustainable farming methods was a natural choice. Her aim at Avignonesi is to produce wines which do not only mirror the distinct identity of the terroir of Montepulciano, but wines which are healthier for her customers, healthier for the land and therefore for future generations.
