Robert Horowitz, the executive producer of SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS 2015, is an expert on all things related to commercials and advertising, especially as it pertains to the biggest football game of the year.  Bob is used regularly this time of year to give his take in the media on which ads will punch through on Super Bowl Sunday and what’s at stake for advertisers.  The special, now in its 15th year, celebrates the best, most creative and popular Super Bowl commercials, and allows for fans to vote on their favorites.

“SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS 2015,”  AN INTERACTIVE COUNTDOWN SPECIAL HOSTED BY BOOMER ESIASON  AND KATHARINE McPHEE, STAR OF CBS’s SCORPION,  TO BE BROADCAST MONDAY, JAN. 26

Voting Now Open on CBS.com for the Top 10 Super Bowl Commercials

SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS 2015 is an interactive countdown special where viewers will be able to vote LIVE on www.cbs.com/superbowl/commercials for their favorite Super Bowl Commercials. The special, hosted by Boomer Esiason, analyst for CBS Sports’ NFL pre-game show THE NFL TODAY, and Katharine McPhee, star of the CBS drama SCORPION, will be broadcast Monday, Jan. 26 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Sponsors present their best commercials during the Super Bowl, and the big game wouldn’t be the same without them. For the advertising community, the Super Bowl is their Super Bowl, and often creates commercials specifically for the enormous viewership that the game provides. For many, watching the commercials is the most entertaining part of the Super Bowl. Advertisers try to get their money’s worth by unveiling their most creative and innovative spots. This one-hour special, now in its 15th year, will originate from The University of Phoenix Stadium, home of “Super Bowl XLIX,” and will celebrate the commercials that have become almost as big as the game itself.

Beginning today, viewers can vote for their favorite Super Bowl commercials, pitting “Old School” against “New School.” Esaison selected his favorite “Old School” commercials which include Coke’s “Mean Joe Greene” and Pepsi’s “Cindy Crawford Classic,” and McPhee will cheer on her “New School” picks such as the Doritos “Sling-Shot Baby” and VW’s “The Force.” These commercials go head-to-head on www.cbs.com/superbowl/commercials, where fans are able to vote to determine the top two Super Bowl commercials. One “Old School” and one “New School” commercial will advance to the live vote during the broadcast, when viewers will decide the outcome and the winner will be revealed at the end of the show.

Kevin Frazier, co-host of ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, will report from various locations in Phoenix on how Arizona is preparing for Super Bowl Sunday. Frazier will also get the scoop on which Super Bowl commercials various celebrities enjoy most.  In addition, James Brown, Bill Cowher, Tony Gonzalez and Bart Scott from CBS’s pregame show THE NFL TODAY will weigh in with their Super Bowl commercial analysis. Also, viewers will be able to catch a sneak peek of this year’s most highly-anticipated commercials before the big game, as well as get a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite spots are made.

Esiason, who quarterbacked the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals during a 14-year NFL career, joined CBS Sports in February 2002 as a studio analyst for THE NFL TODAY, the CBS Television Network’s NFL pre-game show. He joins host Brown, Cowher, Gonzalez and Scott in the studio. In addition, Esiason serves as an analyst alongside Phil Simms, Ed Reed, Brandon Marshall and host Greg Gumbel on INSIDE THE NFL on SHOWTIME, as well as a contributor on NFL MONDAY QB on CBS Sports Network.

Upon retiring after the 1997 season, Esiason headed straight for the broadcast booth. He made his debut as a commentator for ABC’s NFL “Monday Night Football,” and called “MNF” games for two years. For the past 13 years, he has called games for Westwood One Radio Sports “Monday Night Football” broadcasts, teaming with Marv Albert for eight of those years. Once again this year he will team with Kevin Harlan on the MNF radio broadcasts. Esiason debuted as host of WFAN’s national weekday morning radio show BOOMER AND CARTON IN THE MORNING on Sept. 4, 2007. The radio show began simulcasting and debuted on Jan. 6, 2014 on the CBS Sports Network. Esiason hosted “The Boomer Esiason Show” on Madison Square Garden Network for eight years. During the 2001 season, he served as an analyst on Fox Sports Net’s “NFL This Morning.”

After an All-America career at the University of Maryland, Esiason was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft, and became one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history. In 1986, he earned his first of four Pro Bowl bids while leading the NFL’s most productive offense. In 1988, he led the NFL with a 97.4 passer rating and helped the Bengals win the AFC Championship before their loss to San Francisco in Super Bowl XXIII. That year, Esiason was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player by the Pro Football Writers of America and the Associated Press. He again was the NFL passing leader in 1989 as Cincinnati claimed another division title. In 1993, after being traded to the Jets, Esiason became a Pro Bowler for the second time. In only three seasons with the Jets, he became the team’s fourth-leading all-time passer. After playing a season for the Arizona Cardinals, he returned to Cincinnati, where he ended his career with 2,969 completions in 5,205 pass attempts (57 percent completion percentage) for 247 touchdowns and 37,920 yards.

Throughout his career, Esiason, along with his wife, Cheryl, has been a committed and very active participant in many charitable causes, including the Boomer Esiason Foundation, established in 1993 to fight cystic fibrosis after his son, Gunnar, was diagnosed with the disease. To date, the foundation has raised over $100 million.

Prior to her role on SCORPION, McPhee, an accomplished actress and singer, first burst onto the scene in 2005 on Season 5 of “American Idol.” Also, she starred opposite Debra Messing in the musical drama “Smash,” executive produced by Steven Spielberg. McPhee’s additional television credits include the film “In My Dreams,” as well as guest-starring in the series “CSI: NY,” on the Network, “Community” and “Family Guy.” She was featured in two PBS specials, “Foster and Friends” and “Chris Botti in Boston,” alongside Sting, Andrea Bocelli and John Mayer.
McPhee’s feature film credits include “Shark Night 3D” and “The House Bunny.”

McPhee’s self-titled debut album landed at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2007. It was the best chart debut for a female artist in two years. Her first single, “Over the Rainbow/My Destiny,” debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart. The album went gold in 2008, and in 2009, she garnered a Young Hollywood Award for Best Female Vocalist.

McPhee spent 2010 touring the country with her album Unbroken, which included the hit single “Had It All.” She released her first Christmas album in 2010, which covered the yuletide classics and featured an original Christmas song, “It’s Not Christmas Without You.” Another song from that album, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” climbed the charts as a top-five holiday hit. She can be followed on Twitter at @katharinemcphee.

SUPER BOWL’S GREATEST COMMERCIALS 2015 is being produced by IMG Productions, JUMA Entertainment and Robert Dalrymple Productions. Robert Horowitz and Steve Mayer are the executive producers, and Robert Dalrymple and Tony Lanni are the producers. Mark Ritchie will direct.

01/22 ROBERT POWELLS, ROCKET FIZZ SODA POP AND CANDY SHOPS, UNDERCOVER BOSS, RICK STEVES

ROBERT POWELLS - THE PRESIDENT OF THE ROCKET FIZZ SODA POP AND CANDY SHOPS GETS A GOOD TASTE OF WHAT MAKES HIS STORES SWEET, ON “UNDERCOVER BOSS” FRIDAY, JAN. 23

“Rocket Fizz” – Robert Powells, President and Co-Founder of The Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops, the largest candy and soda shop franchise in America, embarks on an emotional journey to discover what keeps his candy shops sweet, on UNDERCOVER BOSS, Friday, Jan. 23 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  The boss discovers that the inventory system is as old-fashioned as his stores’ classic candies, and he fizzles out while working the assembly line at his bottling plant.

Robert Powells , Co-Founder/President Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop, will appear on UNDERCOVER BOSS on Friday, Jan. 23.

Rocket Fizz, headquartered in Camarillo, CA, is the largest candy and soda shop franchise in America , where Robert’s co-founder, Ryan Morgan is based.  Robert runs the company from his home office in northern Nevada (Robert lives in Lake Tahoe) – and their CEO is based out of Palo Alto.

They have 54 stores in 18 states and over 1,000 employees.  Their annual revenue is over $35 million.

This company sells thousands of candy varieties -- and about 500  soda pop flavors, of which 105 are Rocket Fizz flavors. They have soda flavors like Bacon, S’mores, Key Lime Pie.  They have some celebrity flavors too – like (Former Pro Wrestler) Rowdy Roddy Piper Bubble Gum soda.  (Roddy makes a cameo in this episode at Robert’s home.)  Rocket Fizz specializes in old-fashioned candy, which is nostalgic for a lot of their adult customers.

Robert wasn’t a good student in high school, but after working for seven years he enrolled in U.C. Berkeley, where he ended up earning a degree.

In 2007 Robert Powells and Ryan Morgan went on a road trip and came up with the idea for Rocket Fizz.  They  were rejected by 13 banks when they wanted to start this business, so they flew to Asia where they found and purchased 10,000 packages of fake dog poop.  They sold all the dog poop within six months – so, per Robert, Rocket Fizz was partially funded by fake dog poop.

01/20 JIM ED BROWN

JIM ED BROWN - SET TO RELEASE FIRST SOLO ALBUM, IN STYLE AGAIN, IN 30 YEARS

JIM ED BROWN SET TO RELEASE FIRST SOLO ALBUM, IN STYLE AGAIN, IN 30 YEARS

In Style Again features duets with Vince Gill, The Whites, and reunites The Browns
Country Music fans have a good reason to look forward to 2015. Longtime fan favorite Jim Ed Brown will be returning with his first solo recording in three decades with the January release of In Style Again, his debut project for Plowboy Records. “I love new music.” said Brown about his new disc. “I guess the whole world does. It’s always good to hear a new song. I love what I do. People have always been great to me. They have accepted me into their homes and lives. It’s unreal what radio and television has done for me. I am a very blessed man.”

One of the most timeless voices in Country history, Brown has the distinction of having hits on the chart as a member of a trio (His recording partnership with sisters Maxine and Bonnie as The Browns earned them hits with “I Heard The Bluebirds Sing,” “Scarlet Ribbons,” and the 1959 million-selling “The Three Bells”), a solo artist (with hits like the iconic “Pop A Top,” “Southern Loving,” and “Morning”), and as part of a CMA Award winning partnership with Helen Cornelius (The two recorded many classics from 1976-1981, including “I Don’t Want To Have To Marry You,” and “Lying In Love With You” - which was one of the first major hits penned by Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Dean Dillon.)

In Style Again neatly brings together all phases of Brown’s historic career. “When The Sun Says Hello To The Morning” features the distinctve harmonies of his sisters. Brown says reuniting with his sisters is a dream come true. “I’ve had a song in mind for all those years. In fact, I had a copy of it that I picked up when I was in Europe that I have kept for so many years. I thought ‘Why don’t I see if I can’t get them to record one more time with me?”

The album also features twelve solo performances from the singer. But, when an artist as important as Jim Ed Brown steps into the recording studio, other artists naturally want to follow. He is joined on “Tried and True “ and “You Again“ by fellow Grand Ole Opry members Vince Gill and The Whites, respectively. He also reunites with Cornelius on the Carl and Pearl Butler chestnut “Don’t Let Me Cross Over.”

All but one of the cuts on In Style Again were produced by veteran journalist Don Cusic, while the title cut was produced by longtime Brown friend Bobby Bare. “Last year, we were talking, and I said ‘Bobby, I want you to produce a record for me.’ He had been doing some things with his son and some other people. He said ‘Give me a call,’ so I found this song, and I called him. He did a great job on it.”

In Style Again teams Brown up with Shannon Pollard and Plowboy Records. The partnership makes musical sense as the label takes its’ name from Pollard’s grandfather, “The Tennessee Plowboy,” Eddy Arnold. Brown’s warm and tender style has often been compared to that of Arnold, whom he has shared many a stage with.

Brown is also familiar to audiences through his extensive work in television, with his Country Place syndicated series in the early 1970s, Nashville On The Road from 1975-1981, and You Can Be A Star and Going My Way from the 1980s. Brown was also the commerical spokesperson for Dollar General Stores for well over a decade. Since 1963, Brown has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry. His weekly radio show,Country Music Greats Radio Show, is heard on over 200 radio stations per week. The first single from In Style Again will be released soon.

01/19 ARLAN ETTINGER, GUERNSEY'S, LES PAUL, BLACK BEAUTY

ARLAN ETTINGER - PRESIDENT OF GUERNSEY’S - THE ‘HOLY GRAIL’ OF ELECTRIC GUITARS UP FOR AUCTION — GUERNSEY’S TO SELL LES PAUL “BLACK BEAUTY” GUITAR ON FEBRUARY 19

The ‘Holy Grail’ of Electric Guitars up for Auction — Guernsey’s to Sell Les Paul “Black Beauty” Guitar on February 19—

On February 19, New York City-based auction house Guernsey’s will proudly present the very instrument that many credit for making rock and roll possible. Known as “Black Beauty,” this landmark guitar was designed by and belonged to guitarist-inventor Les Paul decades ago — it is the instrument from which Gibson’s enormously popular Les Paul models evolved. Museums, collectors, musicians, and fans alike will have the opportunity to own this pivotal piece of history when it is put up for auction at the Arader Galleries on Madison Avenue in New York City.

A pioneering musician as well as an avid inventor, Les was always looking to improve upon the guitars he was playing. Approached in the early 1950s by Gibson with the hopes of building a true electric model suited to his needs, the first two guitars constructed (known as “Gold Tops” because of their golden color) had multiple design flaws. In response, Les demanded that a much better instrument be made if it were to bear his name. Though initially referred to as the Les Paul Black Custom, this marvel eventually became known as “Black Beauty.”

The guitar’s storied history began when it left the Gibson factory in December of 1953 and was delivered to Les in early 1954.  Modifications and experiments were constantly made on this instrument from its first use in 1954 until its last use in 1976 – all in pursuit of the ideal sound Les craved. He played this guitar for years on the Les Paul and Mary Ford Show (famously sponsored by Listerine), as well as during countless stage performances, and professional recordings. This forward-thinking instrument featured superior refinements: a new tune-o-matic bridge and stoptail piece system, finer inlays, and a fancy-looking binding around the entire guitar -- all in black with gold hardware -- reminiscent of a formal black tuxedo.

Many of today’s most accomplished musicians keep multiple Les Paul models in their arsenal and play them extensively, including Jimmy Page, Slash, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bob Marley, Jeff Beck, Neil Young, Dave Grohl, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, and many, many more. Some of the most famous names in modern rock and blues history proudly played on their own Les Pauls, such as Gary Moore and the legendary Peter Green just to name a few. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of these fine instruments are used around the globe as the guitar of choice for serious players and performers. So important to the history of the electric guitar, Black Beauty appears as the cover story of the February 2015 issue of Guitar Player Magazine where it is described simply as “The Grail!”

After more than 20 years of performing with and innovating on this guitar, Les gifted this iconic instrument in 1976 to his personal luthier, technician, and close friend, Tom Doyle, where it has remained in Tom’s private collection to this day. Both Les and Tom knew that this instrument would be considered a bellwether, one of the most iconic pieces of Les Paul’s career, and a very important and historically significant piece. Some 60 years after it was made for Les Paul, this guitar transcends its inherent importance as a collectable item, a historical musical instrument, and as an amazing piece of memorabilia for fans of the man who made rock and roll a reality.

In addition to this landmark instrument Guernsey’s is proud to offer other select items from the collection of Tom Doyle, most notably Chet Atkins’ legendary prototype Gretsch guitar known as “Dark Eyes.” This one-off Black 6120 model was one of two prototypes Gretsch made for Atkins. (The other was the traditional orange). Chet used the instrument as his benchmark for the many experiments and innovations that would eventually develop the 6120 Model for the mass market; he can also be seen playing this guitar during numerous appearances from the late 1950s. It is by no means a coincidence that both of these black guitars have joined forces once again via this auction, for they each spawned the modern electric offerings of the Gibson and Gretsch guitar companies. Guitar Player Magazine called these instruments “Two of the most important guitars in music history,” and their importance does not solely lie in the hands that played them, but because of what they represent within the confines of the luthiery arts and advancements in sound technology.
Other important pieces in this collection include Les Paul’s Stage Stool from Fat Tuesday’s in New York City, Original Ampex Recording Machine from Les Paul’s Home Studio, Handwritten set lists, Live Les Paul Show Recordings (1984-1990), Mary Ford’s Music Stand and more.
An auction catalogue will be available in January 2015. To order a catalogue, visit www.guernseys.com.

All lots scheduled for this auction will be available for preview at the Arader Galleries located at 1016 Madison Avenue on February 18, 2015 from 1 to 9. Interested bidders may also preview the items on the day of the auction until 7pm when the bidding will promptly begin.

01/16 DOUG STEPHAN, MIKAEL SIGOUIN, KA'ENA WINE, STEVE EVANS

DOUG STEPHAN TALKS ABOUT HIS CAREER AND FARMING

Doug is passionate about radio. Ever since he was a freshman at Heidelberg College in Ohio, he has made it his life's work to create quality programming that entertains, engages and enriche s radio listeners. In the process, Doug has created one of the largest and most successful independent radio organizations in the country.

But the road to success in radio is rarely easy. After graduation, Doug didn't work full-time in radio. Instead, his early career paths exposed him to a wide variety of experiences - from teaching middle school English to running a number of family businesses - although he was never far from his true passion.

He worked on-air wherever and whenever he could - sometimes on 3 stations at the same time - weekends, evenings, whenever he got the chance -all the way from Boston to Providence, Rhode Island. In the early 1980s, while looking for his big break, he was Operations Director at WEEI-AM, a Boston news station,.

Finally, in 1988, he got the chance to do the radio show he dreamed about when he was chosen by American Radio Network to host a new program, GOOD DAY USA. Once again, the road wasn't smooth. With ARN being battered by a series of ownership changes, Doug decided to risk everything to do the show he believed in - and took control of the program.

He changed the name to DOUG STEPHAN'S GOOD DAY, purchased his own satellite time, set up a studio in his home and then found radio stations to run the program. In the beginning, he even sold his own advertising. To support GOOD DAY, he worked on-air at national powerhouses such as KABC, Los Angeles and KMOX, St. Louis.

All of the hard work, vision and ingenuity paid off as DOUG STEPHAN'S GOOD DAY is currently heard on over 350 radio stations by over 3 and a half million listeners every week. Doug is now among the top national talk radio personalities according to TALKERS magazine.

His company, Stephan Multimedia, is the largest independent producer of talk radio programming in the country, with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC, and his reach has extended to Podcasting and the Internet.

But the statistics and growth are only a small part of Doug's success story. The real story is the relationship that he has cultivated with his listeners.

As Doug says, 'I love helping people start every day as a good day, which can include an offbeat slightly crazy story, a shot of humor, or the top news you need to know. Sometimes I like to describe the show as the fun, foibles and frustrations of day-to-day life - filtered through the psyches of both myself and the listener.

The listeners are so important because I am motivated to help people grow - and that includes me. I like to engage, provoke, entertain and inform - to stimulate, sometimes in unexpected ways. Some people even call me a contrarian. I like to think of myself as an entertainer with a mission'.
Doug Stephan is on the Board of Trustees at Heidelberg College and the 4H Foundation Board. He has received numerous industry awards and provided community service for Big Brothers. His children live and work in Los Angeles.

MIKAEL SIGOUIN (MICHAEL SEEGWIN) – WINEMAKER,  KA’ENA WINE

ABOUT US
Kaena was launched in 2001 to showcase Mikael’s deep passion for Grenache. Kaena is a boutique winery that sources from Tierra Alta Vineyard and Larner Vineyard in the Ballard Canyon AVA , primarily.  Mikael who is part Hawaiian and raised on the Oahu shores, uses a shortened version of his given name for the brand – Kaena – which means “potential for greatness”.

That “greatness” is evident in the wines – in 2006 Wine Spectator named Mikael one of the top 10 new Rhone  producers.  Known affectionately by his peers and fans as The Grenache King – Kaena produces 2000 cases of Rhone & other varietals with an emphasis on Grenache.

Mikael credits his success, growth and nickname to his passion for making truly handcrafted wines.  He also credits his wife, Sally, for her design and management of the Kaena Tasting Room located in Los Olivos, California.

WINEMAKING
Winemaking is deeply personal to me.  It is my artistry, my meditation, my profession, my life. It has been 15 years now and when I look back at my first harvest at Beckmen Vineyards in 1999, the slope of my learning curve was exponentially vertical.  I absorbed everything I could.  After a few years, I moved to Fess Parker Winery, and in 2006 I returned to Beckman as head winemaker, where I continue to work today while making Kaena Wines.  Along the way I have had incredible opportunities to work amongst some of the best winemakers in the Santa Ynez Valley. They helped guide me toward my winemaking goals of establishing my own brand and taught me great lessons: Work as hard as you possibly can.  Ask questions. Be aware. Most importantly, be humble. My first vintage of syrah I had to press by hand through cheesecloth. That was 2001. We all have to start somewhere.

Through the years, I have also been fortunate to work with a tremendous variety of fruit from incredible vineyards here in Santa Barbara County.  This exploration has led me   to my primary focus: Grenache.  It is a varietal that is  intensely aromatic, sexy, feminine, bold and always full of surprise. In my obsession with this varietal, my goal is to create the most diverse Grenache portfolio in the Santa Ynez Valley by working with the best fruit available.  I am pretty close to accomplishing this goal.

While wine was not an integral part of my childhood in Hawaii, the paradise of flavors, colors and aromas that I was surrounded by prepared my palate to understand the delicate nuances in fragrance and taste. This overwhelming sensory experience was enhanced by my great-grandmother, Tutu, who raised me.  I’d spend hours by her side watching her patiently layer ingredients in every meal, gently coaxing the best flavors to shine through. Through her work, she taught me to nurture and respect the tremendous gifts we are given.  Never at a loss for words, she called me “Ka’ena’ai” – meaning “potential for greatness.”

My island experiences are embedded in my DNA.  They are the reason I strive to make unique wines expressing the spectrum of their place. With Kaena Wines now in its second decade, I honor the responsibility my great-grandmother gave me.

JONATHAN GEBSER - EDITOR OF THE SLOW WINE GUIDE AND SLOW WINE MAGAZINE -  2015 SLOW WINE US TOUR

THE 2015 TOUR WILL STOP IN LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO AND CULMINATE IN NEW YORK CITY WITH SLOW WINE’S PARTICIPATION  IN THE ITALIAN TRADE COMMISSION’S VINO 2015

New York, December 19, 2014 – Slow Food will debut the new and updated edition of the Slow Wine guide during the 2015 Slow Wine US Tour. With its English-language debut in 2011, Slow Wine, a guide to over 400 of Italy’s best wineries, critiques wine through the perspective of the Slow Food philosophy, believing that wine, just as with food, must be good, clean and fair – not just good. The Slow Wine guide and a selection of its wineries will be holding tasting events for trade and consumers during their annual three city tour, visiting Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City in 2015.

“We think it’s important to highlight how different types of wine exist. Wine is not just a product of a winery, but fruit of a certain soil, a specific climate, and a farming philosophy. With Slow Wine we have changed the way of reviewing wine,” said Giancarlo Gariglio, editor of Slow Wine. Three symbols are used in the guide to evaluate each winery:

  • The Snail, the Slow Food symbol, signals a cellar that has distinguished itself through its interpretation of sensorial, territorial, environmental and personal values in harmony with the Slow Food philosophy.
  • The Bottle, allocated to cellars that show a consistently high quality throughout their range of wines.
  • The Coin, an indicator of great value.

Slow Wine is no longer just a wine guide. In April 2014, Slow Food also launched Slow Wine Magazine, a digital magazine published in English, German and Italian. With six issues a year, the magazine recounts the world of Italian wine with an outlook of the Slow Food philosophy.
The 2015 Slow Wine tour begins in Los Angeles on January 27th, featuring wines from 50+ winemakers from over 15 regions, at Taglyan Complex at 1201 Vine Street. The tour continues in San Francisco on January 29th, where the event will be held at Terra Gallery at 511 Harrison Street. The Slow Wine tour will then conclude in New York City with a two-day showcase on February 2nd and 3rd at the Italian Trade Commission’s new edition of Vino 2015, the leading Italian wine event to be held at New York City’s historic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Over 65 Slow Wine producers representing 15 regions of Italy will be present among the 200+ vintners, importers and producers’ delegations participating in Vino 2015, Italian Wine Week.

About Slow Wine
The Slow Wine Guide, published by Slow Food Editore (the publishing arm of Slow Food Italy**) adopts a new approach to wine criticism and looks at a variety of factors to evaluate wineries in their entirety, taking into consideration the wine quality, typicity and adherence to terroir, value for money, environmental sensitivity and ecologically sustainable viticultural practices. Slow Wine was conceived to give a realistic snapshot of the current Italian wine landscape. The guide features reviews of 400 different wineries, each one visited by Slow Food experts. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com as well as in select bookstores.

**Slow Food International is a global grassroots organization that envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet. A non-profit member-supported association, Slow Food was founded in Italy in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and to encourage people to be aware about the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

JAY JOHNSTONE -  37TH ANNUAL JAY JOHNSTONE / LA HABRA ROTARY GOLF TOURNAMENT

John William Johnstone Jr. (born November 20, 1946) is an American former professional baseball player, active from 1966 to 1985 for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, andChicago Cubs. Johnstone was known as a versatile outfielder with a good sense of humor, known for keeping clubhouses loose with occasional pranks and gimmicks. He later served as a radio color commentator for the Yankees (1989–1990) and Phillies (1992–1993).

Career highlights include:

  • As an Angel, he preserved Clyde Wright's no-hitter against the Athletics in the seventh inning by catching a Reggie Jackson fly ball 400 feet from straightaway center field, just in front of the wall (July 3, 1970).
  • As a Phillie, he went 7-for-9 in the 1976 National League Championship Series against theCincinnati Reds. However, the Reds swept the Series.
  • As a Dodger, he hit a pinch-two run home run in Game Four of the 1981 World Series against theNew York Yankees, the home run rallying the Dodgers from a 6–3 deficit to win 8–7. The victory also enabled the Dodgers to tie the Series at two games each; they won the next two games to win it all.

Clubhouse prankster
He pulled off a number of infamous pranks during his playing days, including placing a soggy brownie inside Steve Garvey's first base mitt, setting teammate's cleats on fire (known as "hot-footing"), cutting out the crotch area of Rick Sutcliffe's underwear, locking Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda in his office during spring training, once dressing up as a groundskeeper and sweeping the Dodger Stadium infield in between innings and then hitting homers the next, nailing teammate's cleats to the floor, and replacing the celebrity photos in manager Lasorda's office with pictures of himself, Jerry Reuss and Don Stanhouse. One time, during pre-game warm ups, he climbed atop the Dodger dugout and, in full game uniform, walked through the field boxes at Dodger Stadium to the concession stand and got a hot dog. He also once dressed up in Lasorda's uniform (with padding underneath) and ran out to the mound to talk to the pitcher while carrying Lasorda's book and a can of Slim Fast.

As a baseball announcer, he once covered a microphone with a scent of stale eggs then proceeded to interview Dave Stewart, Mickey Hatcherand other players.

Many of the pranks, along with other aspects of his career, are described in the books he co-authored with sports columnist Rick Talley –Temporary Insanity, Over the Edge, and Some of My Best Friends Are Crazy.

Appearances outside of baseball
Johnstone appeared in the movie Naked Gun as a member of the Seattle Mariners in a game against the California Angels. Johnstone, who was a left-handed hitter throughout his career, bats right-handed in the movie.

After the Dodgers' 1981 World Series victory, Johnstone and Dodger teammates Rick Monday (with whom he shares a birthday, service in theMarines, and stints with the A's, Cubs, and Dodgers), Jerry Reuss, and Steve Yeager appeared on Solid Gold and sang their own rendition ofQueen's hit, We Are the Champions.
