What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

Jean Tang Stretches Our Minds About Sandwiches with Her BIG NEW YORK SANDWICH BOOK!

Writers Sara Reistad-Long and Jean Tang set out to stretch people's minds about sandwiches. They figured there was no better place than their hometown of New York City. They decided to highlight some of the most innovative and classic sandwiches from New York’s four-star celebrity chefs, industry up-and-comers, skilled ethic innovators, and long-standing neighborhood legends.

The result? THE BIG NEW YORK SANDWICH BOOK: 99 Delicious Creations from the City’s Greatest Restaurants and Chefs These aren’t your typical PB&Js, tuna melts, and pastrami-on-rye. This book features over 90 diverse and flavorful sandwich recipes. With ingredients ranging from lentils to sheep's milk cheese, green tomatoes to forest mushrooms, key limes to salted caramel, the book is a celebration of sandwich culture that emphasizes freshness, variety, and technique.

About Jean Tang: Jean Tang is a journalist and copywriter based in Brooklyn, New York. A Juilliard-trained pianist, Cornell graduate and former lawyer, Jean switched to lifestyle journalism in 2000, because of her passion for writing, her propensity for living large, and her fondness for honing in on amazing experiences and sharing them with the world. Jean's travels to six continents and 40 states, and keen interest in food and its accoutrements have led her to live (briefly) in Paris and Beijing, to take cooking classes in locations as far-flung as Chiang Mai, Sicily, Sydney, Fiji, and the Berkshires, to take cocktail classes from renowned mixologists Junior Merino and Gary Regan, and to visit countless wine regions, distilleries, and breweries.

In 2001, Jean developed a serious interest in local food sourcing and the American Slow Food movement. She has written extensively about local food and rustic dishes. She visited farms in Vermont and France to learn (and write about) cheesemaking, and later, performed an internship at Murray's Cheese. In 2007, Jean hosted Real Meals TV, a webcast food show in which she learned recipes from NYC chefs. Her work has been published in The New York Times, New York Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Modern Bride, Time Out, the Boston Globe, the New York Daily News, and Islands. She is the author of Dirt Cheap NYC, a publication by Sheckys, Inc. Her next book, The Big New York Sandwich Cookbook: Delicious Creations from the City's Greatest Restaurants and Chefs, is being published by Running Press/Perseus and will be out Spring, 2011.

Glamour Magazine Editor Wendy Naugle Tells Us About 100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know!

There once was a simple roast chicken recipe that was passed down from a Glamour editor to a young magazine assistant. The assistant made the chicken for her boyfriend and shortly thereafter, he dropped to one knee and proposed. She passed it along to another assistant and—voila!—another proposal. Today the recipe is responsible for over sixty marriages and counting.

Of course, life is about much more than weddings, and so is this cookbook. Now Glamour magazine has put together a cookbook: 100 RECIPES EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW: Engagement Chicken and 99 Other Fabulous Dishes to Get You Everything You Want in Life (Hyperion; April 5, 2011; $24.99) written by Glamour Editor-In-Chief Cindi Leive and her fellow editors.

Beth Ostrosky made the ‘Engagement Chicken’ for Howard Stern prior to their wedding! And now, Vera Wang is involved and has offered makeovers with beautiful wedding gowns for 4 of the brides getting married in September of this year. 100 RECIPES EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW is filled with 100 of Glamour’s most-loved recipes, all designed to get you exactly what you want. Whether new to cooking or already a nimble chef, with recipes like “Forget the Mistake You Made at Work Margarita”, “He Stayed Over Omelet”, and “Single-Digit Grocery Bill Stew”, there are recipes to fit every mood, goal, mistake, and accomplishment during good times and bad; the point being that food is a meaningful and impactful component in everyday life.

Larry Smyth Takes Us on a Tour of Carriage Vineyards!

Located on a 100-acre ranch in the heart of Central Coast Wine Country and near Hearst Castle, Carriage Vineyards sits among the Templeton hills adjacent to the Paso Robles Wine Region and near Atascadero in the central coast of California. The rural retreat has 28 acres of vineyards and 850 olive trees with a wonderful Carriage House displaying 18 antique carriages. Carriage rides are available. The tastefully decorated rooms of the bed and breakfast inn are most comfortable with views of the vineyards, hills, stream and woods.

The Carriage collection of Larry and Diane Smyth started in the early 1990s in Orange County. The Smyths like the history and elegance of horse drawn carriages. After securing their first of several vehicles they purchased a pair of Morgan horses. (So much for "the horse before the cart" theory!) The strong desire to get back to the "farm" became a reality when they bought the scenic 100-acre Ranch near Paso Robles. Thus "Carriage Vineyards" was created. In the winter of 1999, plans were developed for the vineyard and supporting facilities. 22,000 vines were planted on 27 acres with varieties including Grenache, Syrah, Viognier, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Also 850 olive trees! Many improvements have been made, including an environmentally friendly 20,000 watt solar system.

Winemaker Melissa Burr Talks to Us About Stoller Vineyards in Oregon's Willamette Valley!

Located in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley in the Dundee Hills AVA, Stoller uniquely offers world class wines and genuine hospitality in a stunning setting. Owners Bill and Cathy Stoller purchased the nearly 400 acre property, which was originally his family’s turkey farm, in 1993 and crafted the winery’s inaugural Pinot Noir in 2001. Their vision of innovation blending vineyard stewardship with environmental sustainability was recognized in 2006 when Stoller became the first LEED® certified winemaking facility in the United States attaining the rare Gold level certification. Today, the winery features panoramic views including Mt. Hood, ample outdoor space for relaxation and guest houses.

About Melissa Burr, Winemaker: Melissa was raised in the Willamette Valley and, after completing her BS degree, studied winemaking at Chemeketa and fermentation science at OSU. She came to Stoller in 2003 after working as a harvest hand at several local wineries and as the production winemaker at Cooper Mountain for three harvests. Melissa enjoys the creative and natural process of winemaking and appreciates that Oregon's wine industry is constantly evolving, pushing her to learn more about her craft.
