12/30 LARRY LIPSON, GARY CANTER, CANTER’S DELI

LARRY LIPSON – AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT

GARY CANTER – CANTER’S DELI

Since 1931, Canter's has been serving up LA's finest deli cuisine. Voted the best pastrami by the LA Times and LA Weekly, Canter's prides itself on delivering the amazing experience that has kept its clientele returning over-and-over again for decades. This culinary landmark is lovingly managed by the third- and fourth-generations of the Canter family, who take a hands-on approach to ensure the highest quality in every aspect of the restaurant. Whether it's the freshly-baked breads, or the famous house-made pickles, Canter's always goes the extra mile to provide the authentic, traditional Jewish deli experience, which helped grow the restaurant from a small storefront to the massive operation that it is today. As inviting as its food, Canter's is also known for its welcoming ambiance, a perfect blend of contemporary comfort with the nostalgic charm of its stylish 1950's decor. Canter's continues to stand out as a unique dining experience that transports patrons back to the golden age of delis.

Canter's Deli is one of California's oldest delis. Located in Los Angeles' Miracle Mile District -the heart and soul of the entertainment industry - Canter's Delicatessen is a third-generation family-run business whose owners have an intense pride in their deli and a hands-on work ethic.

It all began in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1924. After losing a deli in the 1929 stock market crash, Ben Canter and his two brothers moved to California with just $500 in their pockets.Eager to succeed, they opened up a Canter Brother's Delicatessen in 1931 in Boyle Heights, the Jewish center of Los Angeles.

When the character of the neighborhood changed, Ben Canter's daughter, Selmo Udko, and her then husband, Harold Price, partnered with Ben Canter and his wife, Jennie, to purchase a prime location at 439 North Fairfax Avenue. And instead of calling it Canter's Brothers they called it Canter's Fairfax.

In 1953 this new team purchased the old Esquire Theatre at 419 North Fairfax and moved Canter's Deli just up the street to the larger location.

For over seventy-five years now this third-generation family-owned business has served food to locals, tourist, and celebrities alike. With its Art Deco décor and its trademark autumn leaves ceiling, this hangout has hardly changed in its over half century at its current location.

Canter's has also become a favorite whistle stop for hot political contests. Mayor Bradley, Governor Deukmejian, Rudy Giuliani, and Bill Simon have gone from booth to booth introducing themselves to our customers. And with CBS studios just up the block, celebrities frequent Canter's every day. Our catering department caters to many television shows and movies, as well as catering their wrap parties.

Over the years, many celebrities have passed through our doors. In the 50s Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller ate here, as did Jack Benny and Elizabeth Taylor. Other celebrity noshers include Sydney Poitier, Mel Brooks, Wilt Chamberlain, Charlene Tilton, Brooke Shields, Jacqueline Bisset, Catherine Oxenberg, John  Travolta, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Buddy Hackett, Olivia Newton John, Muhammad Ali, Monty Hall, Bill Cosby, David Brenner, Rodney Dangerfield, Dick Van Dyke, Shelly Winters, Elizabeth Montgomery, The Cars, Henry Winkler, and Greg Morris. The producer of Miami Vice, Michael Mann, wrote here for hours at a time when he was writing for Vegas. The Neil Simon movie, "I Ought to be in Pictures", with Walter Matthau was filmed here. Many celebrities who prefer to go "incognito" sneak in around 3:00 am for a late night nosh!

Canter's is also part of the larger Los Angeles community having received numerous awards from such institutions as the City of Hope, appreciation letters for outstanding and dedicated service, and letters from Jerry Lewis and the Muscular Dystrophy Association thanking Canters for donating food.

Canter's Delicatessen continues to be a Los Angeles landmark and late night hot spot, and, with the 2003 addition of Canter's Deli at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, we are committed to bringing the best delicatessen food to our noshers on the famed Las Vegas Strip and to Dodger fans at Dodger Stadium.

12/25 HENRY WINKLER, JANE LYNCH, THE 12 STINKS OF CHRISTMAS, STEVE EVANS

ACTOR HENRY WINKLER JOINS THE SHOW TALKING ABOUT CAREER AND HIS FAVORITE RESTAURANTS

Henry Winkler is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Fonzie on the hit 1970s sitcom Happy Days. He has produced and directed several television series.

Actor. Born October 30, 1945, in New York City. An effervescent child, he loved performing and by the age of 14, Winkler decided to become an actor. Despite poor grades, his excellent audition won him acceptance into Yale University's Drama School. At Yale, Winkler devoted his time to performing, often rehearsing one play by day and performing in another by night. After graduation he moved back to New York to make his mark on Broadway.

In 1973, Winkler moved to Los Angeles to take his shot at a career in television.Within two weeks he won a part as Valerie Harper's date on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and followed with a bigger role on The Bob Newhart Show. After a month in Los Angeles, Winkler was homesick for life in New York and decided to move back. Before packing his bags he went on one last audition, for the role of a biker in producer Garry Marshall's new TV series, Happy Days. Marshall originally envisioned a big hunky Italian in the part, but after Winkler's audition, his exhausting search ended.

On January 15, 1974, Henry Winkler made his television debut as Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on Happy Days. Despite few lines and a secondary place in the story line, Winkler began attracting attention. Before long,Winkler was receiving top billing alongside Ron Howard. His newfound fame was almost overwhelming as "Fonzie Fever" swept the nation.

Winkler's first major film role was also in 1974 in The Lord's of Flatbush in which he played a member of a Brooklyn gang.

After the cancellation of Happy Days, Winkler formed his own production company and went on to produce the successful television series Ryan's Four and MacGyver, as well asdirecting the film Memories of Me (1988). Continuing his diverse acting career, he has performed in such films as the teen horror hit Scream (1996), The Waterboy (1998), starring Adam Sandler, the Emmy-winning television series The Practice and Arrested Development.

Off screen, Winkler is a devoted husband for over 30 years. He married wife Stacey Weitzman on May 5, 1978 and is a dedicated father to their two children as well as stepfather to Weitzman's son from a previous marriage. His dedication to children extends beyond his family; he served as the producer of All the Kids are Doing It and Strong Kids, Safe Kids and is an advocate for several groups that benefit underprivileged children. Additionally, he is involved with the Epilepsy Foundation, Toys for Tots, and other charitable organizations.

ACTRESS JANE LYNCH JOINS FEBREZE TO REINVENTED THE CLASSIC HOLIDAY TUNE, “THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS,” SHOWCASING THE STINKS OF THE SEASON: "THE 12 STINKS OF CHRISTMAS"

The holidays stink. Don’t get us wrong, the holidays are a really wonderful time of year… family, friends, parties and gifts. But the truth is... the holidays are filled with a bevy of holiday stinks. Febreze has reinvented the classic holiday tune, “The 12 Days of Christmas,” to showcase the stinks of the season: "The 12 Stinks of Christmas." The holiday music video stars the hilarious duo, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO!

ABOUT JANE:
Jane Lynch was born on July 14, 1960, in Dolton, Illinois. In the 1990s, she made guest appearances on a number of TV sitcoms, including 3rd Rock from the Sun. In 2000, she appeared in the film Best in Show. In 2002, she landed a leading role on MDs. In 2005, she was in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, followed by the show Two and a Half Men. In 2009, she got her most famous role to date as Sue Sylvester on Glee.

Mainstream Success
One of Lynch's first film roles was in the 1988 comedy Vice Versa with Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage. More small parts followed in such movies as Straight Talk and The Fugitive. On television, Lynch made guest appearances on a number of sitcoms, including 3rd Rock from the Sun and Married with Children.

She also did some voice-over and commercials. For one ad, Lynch worked with director Christopher Guest to create a cereal commercial. Months later, the two met up again by accident at a Beverly Hills restaurant, and he asked her to stop by his office. At the time, he was casting his spoof of the dog show world, Best in Show (2000). Lynch signed on to play Christy Cummings, a tough dog trainer who gets involved with a dog owner (played by Jennifer Coolidge). The actors in Guest's films work in an improvisational style. "They give us a really good thumbnail sketch, and then we just take it from there," Lynch explained to The Advocate. "We improvise all the dialogue; there's no written dialogue."

With the success of Best in Show, Lynch soon landed a leading role on television, playing a nurse in the 2002 medical drama MDs. The show only lasted for two months before being canceled. She also lent her voice to a recurring character on the animated comedy The Family Guy. Reuniting with Christopher Guest, Lynch appeared in the folk music comedy A Mighty Wind (2003) as a singer with a past in the adult film industry.

Big and Small Screen
While often tackling small parts, Lynch made the most out each role she took on. She made a number of memorable guest appearances on such shows as Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, and Weeds. On the big screen, Lynch appeared as a raunchy store manager in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) with Steve Carell, stealing nearly every scene she appeared in.

The following year, Lynch played the mother of a race car driver in the comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby starring Will Farrell. She also starred in her own sitcom, Lovespring International, which aired on the Lifetime television network. On the show, Lynch played the owner of a dating service. The series only lasted for 13 episodes.

Lynch had better luck with her recurring role on the popular dramatic series The L Word, which followed the lives of several gay women. On the show she played Joyce Wischnia, a tough lawyer who falls for her client (Cybill Shepherd) while handling her divorce. As a lesbian herself, Lynch especially admired how the series depicted life in the lesbian community. On the show, "we just tell stories about people. That's what I love about The L Word. No one's tortured over their sexuality; it's just accepted," she told The Advocate.

'Glee' Success
Around this time, Lynch also had another, very different recurring role, playing Charlie Sheen's therapist on the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men. She then starred in the critically admired, but ratings deprived comedy Party Down in 2009, a show about a group of aspiring creatives who work for a Los Angeles catering company. That same year, Lynch got her most famous role to date: She began her run as Sue Sylvester, a super-intense cheerleading coach, on Glee. This musical comedy explores the ups and downs of a high school glee club run by teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison). Sylvester views Schuester as her archenemy, and continuously plots to ruin the club. Lynch relishes playing the role, saying that Sylvester "is so cold and ruthless." She utters some of the show's most memorable dialogue. "Jane's unparalleled at her one-liners," series creator Ryan Murphy told The New York Times.

Glee has developed quite a following among television audiences, winning over fans with its catchy musical numbers. Many of these performances are done by glee club members, including Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), a latest-generation Barbra Streisand wanna-be. Lynch, however, has not missed out on all of the fun. She sang "Vogue" during a special episode that incorporated the songs of Madonna. For her efforts, Lynch received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010. She also received a nomination for her guest appearance on Two and a Half Men.

As her latest series has taken off, Lynch has started to settle down. She and her partner, clinical psychologist Lara Embry, married in June 2010. The couple met at a fundraiser in 2009. Lynch is thrilled about her new role as parent to Embry's 8-year-old daughter Haden. "I'm almost 50, and I thought that possibility was behind me, so this is a real delight," she told The New York Times.

FORMER NFL GREAT AND ACTOR FRED DRYER TALKS CONTROVERSIAL FILM STARING WILL SMITH, CONCUSSION AND HIS APPEARANCE ON AGENT X WITH SHARON STONE

Just in time for the Christmas day release of the controversial film, Concussion, former NFL player, Fred Dryer, is available to discuss the dangers inherent in playing professional football and the NFL's attempt to minimize and cover up the damage to players and their families.

Fred Dryer, who suffered brain injuries himself while playing professional football and is still undergoing treatment for his injuries is available to discuss the following:
Head trauma suffered by professional football players
Consequences of the trauma on players and their families
Rush Limbaugh's skepticism about the existence of football related head injuries
The NFL's attempt to cover-up these injuries
The lack of training on the fundamentals of tackling that leave players open to injury.

Kicking off the menu are dishes like ahi sashimi with crisp green apple, jalapeno and local radish; as well as seared beef tenderloin skewers with toasted nori and a miso ponzu dipping sauce. Salad standouts include beets & quinoa, with Surfing Goat Dairy cheese, red and yellow beets, quinoa and fresh herbs; and a wedge Caesar with Waipoli Farms romaine, shaved grana padano, roasted garlic croutons and a sundried tomato Caesar dressing. Entrees include offerings like grilled Hawaiian catch of the day with Molokai sweet potato and coconut puree, ginger spiced broccolini and yuzu brown butter; and braised short ribs with polenta, Alii mushrooms, wilted rainbow chard and red wine short rib jus, among others.

12/21 NFL PLAYER CHRIS DRAFT, VOJTECH KACEROVSKY, CZECHTOURISM LOS ANGELES

FORMER NFL PLAYER CHRIS DRAFT SHARES SIMPLE “IN-BOUND AND “OUT-OF-BOUNDS” WAYS TO HELP LIFT HOLIDAY SPIRITS

Feelings of hope and love are abundant during the holiday season – and they often do more for us than we think. In fact, they can be the best gifts to give to those impacted by serious ailments and medical conditions. A new survey conducted by the American Cancer Society found 3 in 4 (74%) Americans think the holidays are an especially hard time to talk about cancer with friends and loved ones, but there are ways to lift holiday spirits.  Love is important – 77% of Americans think that it’s the trait most important to coping with cancer – but an “I love you” isn’t the only thing you can give someone who has been impacted by cancer this holiday season. According to those who have been impacted by cancer, hope (69%) is the emotion that most helped them get through cancer treatment.  Signaling a renewed, bolder stance in its work to support patients and families touched by cancer, the American Cancer Society has launched a new public awareness campaign – “Advantage Humans” – that puts people, and the collective power of our humanity, at the center of a shift to redefine victory over cancer. The aim of the campaign is to channel the range of raw emotions and unique human traits we all share to triumph over cancer every single day.  Spotlighted in one of the ads is former NFL player Chris Draft whose wife, Keasha, lost her battle to cancer in 2011.

ABOUT CHRIS DRAFT:
Chris Draft is a nationally recognized community leader and health advocate who serves as an NFL Ambassador and a national spokesperson on many health-related issues, including lung cancer, the disease that claimed the life of his wife, Keasha.  Through his work with American Cancer Society and his own Team Draft initiative, he is dedicated to raising awareness, accelerating research for a cure, and giving hope, comfort and inspiration to the patients, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling cancer. Chris had a 12-year career in the NFL as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.

12/16 LARRY LIPSON, NADER MASADEH, BUFFALO WINGS & RINGS, UNDERCOVER BOSS

LARRY LIPSON – AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT

For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Florida weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

NADER MASADEH, PRESIDENT AND CEO, BUFFALO WINGS & RINGS – A.K.A. “THE SAUCE KING OF CINCINNATI” - CBS PREMIERE EPISODE OF THE SEVENTH SEASON OF “UNDERCOVER BOSS”

CBS ANNOUNCES THE PREMIERE EPISODE OF THE SEVENTH SEASON OF “UNDERCOVER BOSS,” BEGINNING SUNDAY, DEC. 20

The seventh season of UNDERCOVER BOSS kicks off with three special Sunday broadcasts, beginning Sunday, Dec. 20, on the CBS Television Network.  The series moves to Fridays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on Jan. 8.

“Buffalo Wings & Rings” – When President and CEO Nader Masadeh, the “Sauce King of Cincinnati,” goes undercover to guarantee that his Buffalo Wings & Rings restaurants each have the recipe for success, he finds one kitchen is too hot to handle when faced with a fiery manager.   The club-level sports restaurant franchise with a chef-inspired family-friendly menu has 66 units globally.

BUFFALO RINGS & WINGS is headquartered in Cincinnati, OH and was founded in 1984.  It has 5,000 employees, 66 global locations and is one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the world.  Together, the restaurants go through about 5 ½ million pounds of chicken annually, use about 125 million gallons of sauce – and serve about 50 million wings.

Per Nader, his restaurant’s concept is very different from their major competitor, Buffalo Wild Wings.  He says BUFFALO WINGS & RINGS is not a sports bar – he believe it’s better than that, since it offers a diverse club-level menu that’s served on china (and they cater to families with children).

ABOUT NADER
Nader was born in Jordan.  His father wanted his children to have the best education and career opportunities, and since there were limitations living in a small country like Jordan, they moved to Cincinnati in 1989, when Nader was 15-years-old.   He recalls it be difficult being in a new school with a culture and language that was also new to him.   As the newcomer at his school, he felt isolated and wanted to move back to Jordan, but his father told him to be patient.

Nader started his career in the restaurant industry as a dish washer at Burger King.  Then he worked at Taco Bell as well as with his father at all of his restaurant ventures throughout his time in high school and college. (He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Xavier University.)

In 2004, Nader’s father asked him if he would invest in a restaurant that he (the father) could operate.   They both put all of their money on the line and bought it.  Once they started operating it, and Nader saw its success, he was driven to get more involved.  He spoke to some investors and in 2005 they bought the franchise and the concept.   There were only four operating restaurants when they bought it.  Now, 10 years later, they have 66 locations globally – including in Jordan, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and soon, in Egypt.  His goal is to have 100 companies globally within the next several years.

ABOUT UNDERCOVER BOSS:
A two-time Emmy Award-winning reality series that follows high-level executives as they slip anonymously into the rank-and-file of their own organizations. Each week, a different leader will sacrifice the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their operation. Stephen Lambert, Chris Carlson and Greg Lipstone are executive producers for Studio Lambert/All3Media America.

12/11 JAMES CARLING, VENTURA LIMONCELLO, DAVID HULL THE HULABALLOER, ‘THE LEGENDS OF DOO WOP’, STEVE EVANS

JAMES CARLING – PRESIDENT, VENTURA LIMONCELLO

Conceived in Italy, Born in California!

Ventura Limoncello celebrates the rich tradition of Italy while embracing the adventurous style of California. Like all things Italian, Ventura Limoncello radiates passion and pleasure. We are pleased to now offer 3 award winning, artisan, handcrafted liqueurs: Ventura Limoncello Originale, Ventura Limoncello Crema and Ventura Orangecello Blood Orange. We also distribute Ventura Limoncello Vinaigrette.

Our tantalizing, all-natural limoncello infusions bring together our generation-honed recipe with locally grown fruit. We use only carefully selected lemon varietals, grown in the protected valleys and rolling hills of Ventura County, California. The fruit is allowed to ripen fully in steady sunshine, tempered by fresh breezes from the Pacific.

Impress your friends by pouring our ice-cold limoncello into chilled glasses for a perfect after meal cordial. Watch conversations come alive as your guests sip this smile-inducing libation. Or take this old-world beverage to new-world heights by indulging in our limoncello recipes for dazzling desserts and cocktails.

Please visit the retail locations that carry our liqueurs to pick up a bottle. You can find them on our Where to Purchase page. Or enjoy one of our restaurant partners who proudly serve our liqueurs in signature cocktails and desserts. Some even use our liqueurs as their “secret ingredient” in their dishes…

Our premium citrus liqueurs embrace today’s West Coast lifestyle, while paying grateful homage to our Italian legacy. Ventura Limoncello offers a pleasant way to unwind after a long day and a delicious meal. It embodies La Dolce Vita, “California Style”.

MORE ABOUT:
The Ventura Limoncello Company was founded in 2007 by James Carling and Manuela Zaretti-Carling. Our mission is to be the premier producer of limoncello liqueurs in the United States. We use the recipe handed down to Manuela from her Nonna in Italy. Ventura County, California, is home to some of the most amazing lemons in the world and their peels make a world class Limoncello. According to the US Department of Agriculture, approximately 80% of all lemons grown in the US come from Ventura County. Due to the year round lemon growing season, we produce Ventura Limoncello in small batches all year.

We have also released our Ventura Orangecello liqueur using blood oranges, also grown in Ventura County. Unlike lemons, blood oranges are seasonal in Ventura. Our Orangecello Blood Orange will only be produced seasonally.

We work direct with local Ventura County growers who pick tree-ripened citrus to our specifications.

Ventura Limoncello Originale was released in February, 2008 and was initally well received. Our Limoncello was awarded Gold Medal at the 2011 and 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Platinum Medal at the 2009 LA SIP Awards. Ventura Limoncello Originale has been America’s highest rated Limoncello 4-years in a row. Ventura Limoncello Crema was relased in October, 2008. It was awarded Gold Medal at the 2010 LA SIP Awards.

Ventura Orangecello Blood Orange was released in May, 2011. It was recognized as Double Gold Medal, “Best in Class” at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Ventura Limoncello’s liqueurs are all natural and handcrafted. We hand peel all the fruit. This ensures only the top layer of peel containing the oils are used. No pith. Our natural processes produce aromatic and full flavor liqueurs. The true sign of an all natural Limoncello is “Il Collarino” (the little collar). This is formed by the citrus oils that gather at the top of the bottle. In our Limoncello Crema, milk fat may gather at the top. A quick shake before serving mixes everything back together in the bottle.

ABOUT DAVE:
Dave Hull, aka "The Hullabalooer", is a Los Angeles radio personality voted one of the top ten LA radio personalities of all time. Born Jan. 20, 1934, he admits to being 77 with his personal addition herewith dated Mar. 3, 2011.

Hull began his radio career in Armed Forces Radio in Casablanca, Morocco and in commercial radio in 1955 at KGFL in Roswell, New Mexico. He reached Los Angeles' KRLA in 1963 as weekend relief and full time there on Jun. 6, 1964.

By the end of 1964, Hull's increasing popularity prompted one young female fan, Suzie Cappetta, to write and record a song entitled "Dave Hull The Hullabalooer", which quickly reached the local top 40 charts by early 1965. Hull became close with The Beatles during their 1965 and 1966 American tours. During that time, Hull taped approximately fourteen interviews with the band. He, along with Bob Eubanks, planned The Beatles' 1966 concert at the Chavez Ravine-Dodger Stadium. His work with the band earned him the honorary title of "fifth Beatle." Hull worked closely with The Beach Boys, The Dave Clark Five and The Rolling Stones during that period. In December 1965, Hull opened his "Hullabaloo" teen club on Sunset in Hollywood.

He got his nickname while working at WONE in Dayton, Ohio. Los Angeles radio historian Don Barrett quotes Hull as saying: "A woman wrote me from a hotel outside Dayton to say she couldn't stand all that hullabaloo. Well, Webster's defined it as a 'tumultuous outroar,' so I used it." Dave appeared (using the name David Hull) as a talent contest manager in an October, 1966 episode of "The Monkees".

Dave Hull was the first guest host on the nationally syndicated American Top 40 program, week ending November 6, 1971. ] He was heard in Los Angeles at the time on KGBS.

Today, Hull lives in Palm Springs, California and is now retired. He held the 6-midnight slot on one of the country's few remaining beautiful music stations, KWXY, from 1994 until his announced retirement in 2010. He also remains active as a voiceover for national radio and television commercials. Hull's book, Hullabaloo!: the (Mis)Adventures of L.A. Radio Legend Dave Hull was released in January 2013.

Los Angeles is a giant playground with an amazing array of venues, spaces, wine bars, restaurants, beaches, roof tops, gardens, and magical views. We want to be a part of the LA lifestyle, the wine lifestyle, and celebrate the people, the place and the passion.

wineLA will promote significant events, occasional classes, and tastings of merit. This is phase two of what we started 20 years ago at LearnAboutWine.com - America’s first wine education website and first in wine event creation. LearnAboutWine will now evolve onto a digital platform; the transformation will take some time; so we will slowly rebrand our event efforts onto wineLA, reduce the number of activities we focus on, and elevate our efforts to focus on the next big thing… Doing what is best for the wine industry and the communities we serve.  Edicts:  innovate, evolve and excite.

We thank you for joining our newsletter, we will be sending fewer emails and packing them with amazing content. We want to be your wine content provider and would love to hear about your favorite places, your music, your locations - we want to be under the influence of what ignites your passion for Los Angeles.

12/08 PHILLIP RHODES, THE SOUTHERNER’S COOKBOOK RECIPES, CHEF TIFFANI FAISON, SWEET CHEEKS Q, TIGER MAMA

PHILLIP RHODES - THE SOUTHERNER’S COOKBOOK RECIPES, WISDOM, AND STORIES

Come On In, Take A Seat & Have A Taste Of THE SOUTHERNER’S COOKBOOK: Recipes, Wisdom, And Stories From the Editors of Garden & Gun

From the magazine that brought you the New York Times bestselling Southerner’s Handbook and Good Dog comes an heirloom-quality guide to the traditions and innovations that define today’s Southern food culture, with more than 125 recipes and 4-color photography throughout.

The South has long been known as a fine place to dine—from hole-in-the-wall fried chicken joints in Mississippi to roadside barbeque stands in North Carolina to white-tablecloth Creole restaurants in New Orleans. No one ends a trip down South on an empty stomach. Now the editors of the magazine that is defining a new generation of Southern food culture offers its first cookbook. It provides a total immersion into the places, people, and ingredients that have shaped the South’s culinary traditions.

As you would expect from G&G, each recipe tells a story. For some, like those culled from the magazine, the story is associated with the chef. Other recipes include stories that offer context for uniquely regional dishes, like sonker, Piedmont North Carolina’s take on cobbler, or West Indies Salad, which hails not from the Caribbean, but from Mobile, Alabama. For familiar, tried-and-true classics, G&G will offer its own creative twists and updates—think pimento cheese three ways; rabbit-instead-of- chicken and dumplings; or classic Southern sandwiches like Hot Browns or Mufulettas done up as party canapes.

ABOUT PHILLIP:
Phillip Rhodes is the executive managing editor of Garden & Gun, where he oversees editorial operations. He is part of the team that led the title to its National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2015, and produced and co-authored The Southerner’s Cookbook, a New York Times best seller. Previously he was executive managing editor at Cooking Light, where he introduced such programs as the Sunday Strategist digital meal plans and the Cooking Light Garden. Prior to that, he was nutrition editor for Men’s Health, contributed to the best-selling Abs Diet books, and worked on the launch team for Women’s Health. He was born in North Carolina, raised in Tennessee, and received a B.A. in communication arts from Allegheny College.

TIFFANI FAISON – TOP CHEF COMPETITOR AND OWNER OF SWEET CHEEKS Q IS SET TO OPEN HER NEW SOUTHERN ASIA RESTAURANT TIGER MAMA THIS THURSDAY

This Thursday, Tiffani is opening her new Southeast Asian restaurant Tiger Mama, deemed one of the most anticipated restaurant openings of the year by Zagat. Tiger Mama will be sexy, bold, dynamic, and crave-able as it merges Tiffani’s culinary skill and creativity with the flavors of Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, areas she has traveled to extensively during the past couple of years.  Tiger Mama will be located a mere block away from Sweet Cheeks, which has been awarded “Best Barbecue” by Boston Magazine four years in a row.

ABOUT TIFFANI:
Chef Tiffani Faison of Sweet Cheeks and Tiger Mama in Boston has made a name for herself nationwide for her dynamic personality, fierce work ethic and distinct ability to create restaurants that are warm, creative, and instantly loveable.

Tiffani began her career working under such renowned chefs as Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse, Todd English and Tony Maws. In 2006, early into her career, she was cast on the very first season of Bravo’s Top Chef, and placed as runner-up. From there, she worked in prestigious kitchens in Nantucket, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before returning to Boston in 2010 to become Executive Chef of Southern Italian restaurant, Rocca Kitchen & Bar. After transforming Rocca into a critically acclaimed dining destination with a three star review from The Boston Globe, Tiffani set her sights on creating her own restaurant.

She opened Sweet Cheeks Q in 2011 during the rebirth of Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. Drawing inspiration from her love of Southern barbecue and extensive travels in Texas, Sweet Cheeks became an instant hit for its laidback Southern charm and addictive offerings: Berkshire Pulled Pork, Great Northern Brisket, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Biscuits with Honey Butter. Shortly after opening, Sweet Cheeks garnered a three-star review from The Boston Globe and it has since been awarded with such accolades as “Boston’s Best Barbecue” by Boston magazine in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Its Biscuits were deemed “Best Biscuits in the World” by Forbes.

Most importantly though, Tiffani has created a restaurant that is both a neighborhood gem and a dining destination. Sweet Cheeks uniquely attracts the young professionals moving into the neighborhood’s new developments at lighting speed, the Red Sox fans who come to Fenway religiously, and guests from near and far who are simply seeking the city’s best ‘cue.

This Winter 2015, Tiffani expands on her culinary skills, creativity and business savvy with a new restaurant: Tiger Mama, found on the same block as Sweet Cheeks in Fenway. The seeds of Tiger Mama formed during Tiffani’s travels to Southeast Asia. “When done well, this is the most dynamic food in the world,” she says with her trademark intensity and passion.

When the doors open, Tiger Mama will offer a menu that journeys through Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, offering Tiffani’s unique stamps on timeless dishes like Papaya Salad, Crispy Duck, King Chili Crab, Banh Xeo and Nasi Campur. The goal is not to aim for authenticity, but to playfully interpret traditional recipes while maintaining their intricate, crave-able flavors.

Opening the restaurant in Fenway, a neighborhood that is so rich in history yet so ripe with growth and an area that Tiffani has contributed to so greatly since opening Sweet Cheeks, gives Tiger Mama all the more meaning to Tiffani. From a chef who pours her heart and soul into each project, Tiger Mama promises to set a new benchmark, both for Tiffani’s career and Boston’s dining culture.

Outside of the kitchen, in addition to placing runner-up in Top Chef Season One, Tiffani competed on Top Chef All-Stars Season Eight in 2010. She has made frequent appearances on NBC’s TODAY, PBS’s Simply Ming and was Host of “Tiffani’s Taste” and “Food Truck Friday” on NECN. She has been a contributing chef to numerous cookbooks and has been widely featured in such national outlets as SELF, Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine and Food & Wine.

Tiffani lives in Jamaica Plain with her wife and business partner Kelly Walsh and furry kids. She is a tireless advocate of LGBT human rights.
