What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

Mike & Brook Carhartt, Owners & Winemakers of Carhartt Vineyards Takes Us Through Their Santa Ynez Valley Winery!

The ten-acre Carhartt Vineyard sits high on a mesa with maximum sun exposure and a soil structure that lends itself to the production of outstanding fruit. Planted in 1996, the vineyard is situated in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley appellation (AVA), blessed with a climate that is particularly suited to Rhône and Bordeaux varietals. The cool mornings quickly move into hot, sunny days that remain warm until sundown. The growing season is long, often stretching into late November, which allows the grapes to fully ripen and achieve their optimal balance of sugars, acids and spicy flavors.

What's Cookin' Today Hour TWO:

John and Tracy Anderson Tell Us About Their Delectable Chocolate Business, Woodhouse Chocolates!

Woodhouse Chocolate is an intimate family business that requires the strengths of each member of the Anderson Family. Tracy Wood Anderson as Chocolatier leads the way in creating the unique flavors and inventive expression of their confections. Assisting her is her mother, Chris Wood who is accomplished in both the fine arts and the culinary arts. Equally helpful are daughters Christina and Caroline who are learning the chocolatier's craft in the kitchen and the art of customer service working in the beautiful Woodhouse store. Last but not least, by any means, is John Anderson, who is the glue that holds it all together and keeps the doors open. Tracy quips that she makes the chocolates, but John does everything else.

Santa Rita Hills Tells Us About Their Upcoming Events & Celebrations!

The Santa Rita Hills is a wine growers alliance located in Santa Barbara County between Buellton and Lompoc. They're celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their AVA designation this year (This is a certification process that every wine region has to go through). Their unique transverse valley and coastal influence of the Pacific Ocean that lies just west of their boundaries makes their area a prime location for growing cool climate pinot noir and chardonnay.

Their region consists of 30,720 square acres bordered by the Santa Rita Hills to the north and the Santa Rosa Hills to the south. When they applied for our AVA designation in 1998 they had 14 vineyards planted, ten years later they have 55 vineyards with approximately 2533 total acres planted. 1920 acres are planted to pinot noir, 462 acres planted to chardonnay and about 600 acres are planted to 18 other varieties including syrah, Pinot Gris and Viognier.
