Can Low-Cal Diets Make Your Crazy... Literally? Nutrition Expert Doug Ingoldsby Enlightens Us

Most of us have tried "crash dieting" at one time or another in our lives.

Nutrition expert Doug Ingoldsby of All One agrees that there's no question that a calorie-slashed daily diet will trigger a rapid drop in body weight. "However, studies show that a low calorie diet comes with a cost, not only to our physical health but to our mental health as well," says Ingoldsby.

Ingoldsby says in one Israeli study, researchers evaluated 10 psychiatric patients, most of whom had never had any emotional problems prior to their first attempt at rapid weight loss. "Researchers found a direct correlation between the severity of their mental condition and the speed and amount of weight the patient lost," says Ingoldsby.

Ingoldsby says this theory was further explored by a study conducted at the University of Minnesota. "Thirty-six fun-loving, healthy men of normal weight were put on a 1500-calorie diet," says Ingoldsby. "After six months, all of the subjects suffered from psychological deterioration. They became weak and irritable, apathetic, and antisocial."

Ingoldsby says a similar study was carried out at the Mayo Clinic; "A group of emotionally healthy young women who did not need to lose weight agreed to live together in the clinic under a doctor's strict supervision while being fed a restricted diet for an extended period of time. In less than 90 days the women's personalities had begun to change, they began experiencing unprovoked feelings of anxiety, persecution and hostility. Some had nightmares and others panic attacks. The doctor overseeing the study stated that he had 'created a group of neurotics'."

Doug Ingoldsby is the founder of ALL ONE Supplements, manufacturer of the world's first high potency multiple vitamin/mineral/protein powder, ALL ONE. The Ingoldsby family has been in the vitamin business since 1936. Doug's father, James, was responsible for creating the first "high potency" vitamin C tablet, and worked with nutritionist Adelle Davis to create the first "stress" formula, many of the first multiple vitamin and mineral combinations, and the first nutrition candy bar, "Tiger's Milk".

NASCAR's David Reutimann Dishes on the 2011 Season and a New Contest Offering the Chance to Win The Right To Be Grand Marshal of the TUMS Fast Relief 500!

The ribs and spicy sauce, the hotdogs and ketchup, the lemonade and beer. The roar of the engines, the cheering, the packed stands, and the snack bars. It’s summer – time for barbeque and NASCAR! It’s also prime time for heartburn. But you don’t have to let summer fun trigger uncomfortable symptoms.

David Reutimann, the driver of the No. 00 TUMS Toyota, chats about the NASCAR season, as well as a new contest that we can enter.

Reutimann is a NASCAR veteran, marking his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Expectations are high for Reutimann, as he returns with the same crew chief who helped lead him to his second Sprint Cup win in 2010 at Chicagoland Speedway.

The call for entries for the “Sing Your Heart(burn) Out” contest is going on now. Among other great prizes, the winner will earn the privilege of serving as the Grand Marshal at the TUMS Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 30, 2011. The Grand Marshal will speak the most famous words in racing: “Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!”

Contestants have the opportunity to perform and submit the best “TUMS, Ta, Ta, Ta, TUMS” jingle. Each submission will be judged on one-third creativity, one-third originality and one-third relevance to the theme.

In 2011, David Reutimann enters his fifth full NASCAR Sprint Cup season driving Michael Waltrip Racing’s Toyota Camry sporting the traditional Reutimann family No. 00 and the equally familiar paint scheme. The 40-year-old Reutimann also competes with his crew chief of three years, Rodney Childers, and a largely intact No. 00 crew from the previous season. In 2010, Reutimann’s fifth-place finish in the season opening Daytona 500 set a career best in NASCAR’s most prestigious event and also captured his second Sprint Cup win at Chicagoland Speedway.

We're Visiting Graton Ridge Cellars with General Manager Sue Bonzell

Since 1945 the Paul family has been inviting visitors to their family location for a taste of the Russian River Valley. In early years, fresh apple juice and apples enticed travelers and locals alike to stop by and fill their cars with the sweet aroma of Sonoma County’s famous Gravenstein apple. Many of those families made the ranch an annual excursion and they looked forward to visits from the folks they fondly called "regulars." As times have changed, so too has the farm; bins of apples have given way to bins of grapes, and the rustic farm stand has been refurbished into a more modern facility. Today, visitors to the ranch taste the flavor of the Russian River Valley through their proprietary wines.

As a small family operation, led by Owners Art and Barbara Paul, three generations participate in the cultivation of premium grapes on the Sonoma County estate. The Paul family vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonay and Sauvignon Blanc. With the guidance of winemaker, Nick Legg, they transform some of the best wine grapes in the region into handcrafted wines. Each vintage is produced with utmost attention to detail. Nick brings his years of experience to the ranch, helping to capture a bountiful harvest – and the ove of the land – in a glass for your enjoyment.

After teaching wine education independently for over 15 years on the San Francisco Peninsula, including the development of a wine education program for the College of San Mateo, Jon and his wife Barbara followed their dreams by purchasing a six acre Russian River Valley vineyard property in 2001 and moving to Sonoma County to start their own winery - Jon’s formal education is a BS in Marketing with a minor concentration in Computer Science gaining knowledge about wine production from attending the UC Davis Extension Enology and Viticulture program. In 1999, Jon began producing wine, starting with a single barrel of Contra Costa Zinfandel, using grapes purchased from Rosenblum Cellars.

Occupation: Commercial Real Estate Broker
This self-proclaimed “brains and brawn” type is an entertaining guy for sure.
The girls will be attracted to his wit, and his swagger will surprise the guys.

This summer, NBC will premiered “Love in the Wild,” an exciting, new adventure-dating series that will put relationships to the ultimate test. Hosted by Darren McMullen (Australian “Minute to Win It”), 10 single men and 10 single women, all looking for love, will experience a romantic adventure unlike anything they could have ever imagined. In each episode, the couples will pair up in exhilarating quests that will push their bodies and their emotions to the limit. Some of these include paddling down crocodile-ridden waters, navigating through bat-infested caves and hanging 200 feet above the rain forest floor as they descend down one of the most majestic waterfalls in Costa Rica. After each adventure, the winning couple will share a night together at the “Oasis,” a lavish, five-star bungalow overflowing with everything they could possibly desire for an intimate night of romance. The remaining couples will stay with their partners in the less luxurious “Cabins,” where they will gather for a night of socializing.

During an elimination unlike anything seen before, all of the couples will come together to reveal whether a connection has been formed with their current partner -- or if they would like to switch and get to know someone else. At the end of every episode, two heartbroken singles will be sent home.

During his lifetime, Colonel Harland Sanders was named one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, but a 2010 survey of American adults aged 18-25 revealed that six out of 10 could not identify the famous face on KFC’s iconic bucket. In fact, 52 percent believed he was a made up corporate icon.

To help right this wrong and keep the Colonel’s memory alive for future generations, KFC is on a mission to collect stories about Colonel Sanders from family members, friends and consumers who met him before his passing 30 years ago.

Gary Pisoni Visits with Us and Talks About Lucia Vineyards!

Winegrower Gary Pisoni comes from generations of farmers who tended row crops long before he was born. Pisoni enjoyed drinking and collecting fine French wines while in college. When he graduated, he was eager to find a way into the wine business. When he told his father he wanted to plant grapevines on the family cattle ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands, he was met with several objections, not the least of which was the cost. Gary countered to his father, “Have you ever been to a $250 lettuce tasting?” His father relented and a legendary vineyard was born in 1982. Gary’s positive energy has made him a household name among Pinot circles.

Gary planted his own-rooted vines in virgin soil. It took ten years of witchers and well drillers to tap into a water source on the sixth try. Water turned the wilderness into a garden and made Gary’s dream come true. The original vines are rumored to be from suitcase cuttings from a famous domaine in Vosne-Romanee, now called the Pisoni clone or selection.

Winemaker son Jeff and grape grower son Mark created the Pisoni label, releasing the first estate Pinot Noir in 1998. A second label, Lucia, debuted in 2000. Pisoni fruit quickly became highly prized in California and Pisoni Vineyard put Santa Lucia Highlands on the map, becoming one of California’s true ‘cult’ vineyards. Many top producers craft a Pisoni vineyard-designate Pinot Noir (Arcadian, Capiaux, Morgan, Patz & Hall, Peter Michael, Siduri, Tantara, Testarossa).

Gary Pisoni also manages nearby Garys’ Vineyard with Gary Franscioni. The Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir is sold exclusively through a mailing list. The Lucia wines are made in larger quanitities and are sold through a mailing list offering and retail distribution.

Cindy Friedman Tells Us About the Upcoming Catalan Festival - This Weekend!

The Catalan Festival at Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards pairs the unique spirit of Catalonia with the world-class quality of California sparkling and still wines. A celebration of the winery’s Spanish roots and the opening of the winery in July 1986, the Catalan Festival is now in its 25th year. In 2011, join us in celebrating our 25th Anniversary.

Spain used to be a cluster of different kingdoms— Aragon and Catalonia, Valencia, Castilla—each with its own language, culture, heritage and royal family. Eventually, by marriage or conquest, it all became one country. In the northeast of Spain, Catalonia has kind of an urban, yet Mediterranean feel to it. A lot of artists and entrepreneurs come from there as opposed to other regions that are more agricultural. Barcelona, Catalonia's enchanted city, is often referred to as Paris with palm trees.

Whether you're coming for the first time or to relive happy memories, you'll find plenty to do at the festival.

7/21 YMCA Food Program, Fabulous Cocktails, La Quinta Resort & Club

What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

Valerie Lawson Tells Us About the YMCA's Program to Feed Kids This Summer

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 19.5 million low-income children receive free or reduced-cost meals during the school year. Yet only one out of five children continues to receive these free meals during the summer months. This puts millions of our nation’s children at risk of hunger.

Valerie Lawson, an exercise physiologist and registered dietitian at YMCA of the USA, will discuss how the Y is helping to fight hunger this summer by partnering with Walmart to promote the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). As part of the program, children 18 and under will have access to free meals and snacks, helping to not only keep children healthy, but also provide relief to families who are unable to afford additional meals during the week. More than 300 Ys will offer summer food programs in communities nationwide to feed 70,000 kids and provide 7 million meals.

For the past 15 years, Valerie Lawson, an exercise physiologist and registered dietitian, has helped people of all ages make positive changes toward a healthier lifestyle. Valerie joined YMCA of the USA in 2007 and is part of the Chronic Disease Prevention Program team. Among her responsibilities, Valerie leads Healthy Family Home, an initiative that provides families with simple and flexible ideas to incorporate healthy changes into their daily lives. In addition to her role with Healthy Family Home, Valerie is a Master Trainer for the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, for which she has trained more than 175 Lifestyle Coaches who guide and assist participants in reducing their risk of developing diabetes, and helps lead strategies for families interested in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
