3/7 Kenny Rogers, Aml Ameen, the Cheese Impresario, Laura Innes, The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.!

What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

The Legend, Kenny Rogers Tells Us About His Latest Album, "The Love of God."

By now, Kenny Rogers, has become such a living legend that it’s easy to forget how he got there. Having recorded more than 65 albums which have sold over 120 million records worldwide during his 52 years in show business, Rogers is an American Icon who is in the same league as The Beatles, Elton John and Elvis Presley. Rogers has received hundreds of awards for his music and charity work, including three Grammys, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 18 American Music Awards, eight Academy of Country Music awards and five Country Music Association awards. Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, Rogers, voted the “Favorite Singer of All-Time” in a 1986 joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People, still loves touring and recording new music.

His long list of smash country and pop hits includes an impressive 24 #1’s. He is the voice of such timeless classics as “The Gambler,” “Lucille,” “Coward Of The County,” “Lady,” “Through The Years,” “She Believes in Me,” “Islands in the Stream,” and “We’ve Got Tonight.” Very few artists have enjoyed successful careers in such a variety of genres as Rogers – jazz, folk, rock, country and pop. His songs have universal appeal and his sweetly raspy vocals are instantly identifiable. He sounds like nobody else. More importantly, he inhabits each song, making it vivid and tangible. For five decades, Rogers has delivered memorable songs, drawing fans from many different backgrounds. “I really, really love what I’m doing,” Rogers says. “People survive longer if they love what they’re doing. Because you just don’t quit.”

And now, Kenny Rogers will become the first artist to release a second album through the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® exclusive music program when “The Love of God” becomes available on March 7, 2011. The CD is an inspirational collection of classic songs that Rogers remembers from his childhood along with new recordings of contemporary songs. This touching CD, certain to spark old memories and create new ones, will be available exclusively at all Cracker Barrel locations and online.

Aml ("Ah-mel") Ameen Talks About His Role Opposite Kathy Bates in “Harry’s Law” as Malcolm!

Ameen began his career at the age of 7 when he attended the Barbara Speake Stage School in West London where he showed a passion and talent for dancing, singing and acting. He landed his first TV role in the British children’s series, “123 Hullabuloo.” At age 11, Ameen starred in his first stage role, playing young Sammy Davis Jr. in the West End production of “Jolson.” He went on to a leading role in the West End musical, “Oliver” and continued with many stage performances including touring with his own choreographed tap dance and performing with Michael Jackson at the 1996 Brit Awards with Jarvis Cocker.

Upon graduation, Ameen landed the coveted role of Trife in the cult classic British indie film “Kidulthood.” His highly acclaimed performance and the film’s rave reviews earned Ameen a nomination for Best Newcomer at the 2006 Screen Nation Awards, as well as a spot in The London Times’ list of best new actors of the year. Ameen also won the 2007 Screen Nation Award for Best Actor on the BAFTA Award-winning hit series “The Bill.”

Before venturing to Hollywood earlier this year, Ameen returned to the London stage to star in three plays simultaneously off the West End. His portrayals of three very different characters once again earned him critical reviews. In the play “Detaining Justice,” Ameen played the title character “Justice,” a Zimbabwean asylum seeker fleeing persecution for his political views. In “Category B,” he portrayed a convicted rapist who finds his faith in prison, and in “Seize the Day,” he played an intellectual street kid, likened to Tupac Shakur.

Along with his acting career, Ameen has set up his own production company with his first feature screenplay already optioned by Revolver. He plans to continue with both acting and directing, while spending as much time in Los Angeles as possible.

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company's Harold Mabile Tells Us About Mardi Gras At Bubba Gump's in New Orleans!

The Mardi Gras celebration in the French Quarter is like nowhere else in the world. New Orleans isn’t the only city to host the revelry filled celebration, but it’s arguably the best. The season begins officially in January, but the real celebrating kicks off the Friday before and builds to a breathtaking climax on Fat Tuesday.
As a restaurant in the French Quarter, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company is thoroughly enjoy hosting folks from all over the city and the world! It’s a time where folks typically step outside of their normal lives dress up in zany costumes and lose themselves for a while in revelry. Oh, the costumes! Last year the big thing was obviously all about the Who Dat Nation. It was a sea of Black and Gold! It will be interesting to see the popular themes this year. The party-goers enjoy engaging with the restaurant guests and often stop by and show off their fun costumes and special catches from the parades.

One of the things that makes New Orleans Mardi Gras so interesting is the fact that you can take your drink to go. This year the Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory has a delicious drink called the Mardi Gras Madness that is perfect for parade watching.

Lots of folks stop by for a meal or drink on the way to the parade route. The restaurant's balcony is a great place for people watching. There are no major parades that will pass in front of the restaurant, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any action!

While Mardi Gras is known most for it’s revelry and sometimes questionable behavior, it is still a time for local families to gather. It’s not uncommon to see families camped out on the neutral grounds with blankets, tents & LADDERS!

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is a great family friendly restaurant with a great kids menu and an engaging environment. They provide top quality seafood, a fun interactive experience and an environment that brings the movie Forrest Gump to life. Their prime location in the historic French Quarter on Decatur Street is conveniently located within walking distance of Jackson Square, Jax Brewery, the River Walk, and of course the Downtown parade routes. The restaurant offers two floors of indoor dining, as well as, courtyard and balcony dining. Their enthusiastic staff will keep everyone smiling with trivia questions from the movie Forrest Gump and superb service with an element of fun.

Continuing Our Series On Mardi Gras, We're Visiting With Louisiana Winemaker John Seago, Owner of Pontchartrain ("Poncha-train") Vineyards and Winery!

Planting began at Pontchartrain Vineyards’ 40 acre vineyard site north of Covington, in the fall of 1991. The location is approximately 140 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 20 miles north of Lake Pontchartrain in the first hills arising off the flat coastal plain of south Louisiana. The vineyard is approximately 150’ above sea level and has well drained, sandy loam soils from the Savannah and Ruston series of the soils of the upland terraces. Pontchartrain Vineyards, which is a registered trade name of Distinctive Wines of Louisiana, Inc., was formed in 1992.
The planting of the first 5.5 acre block was completed in the spring of 1992 and the vineyard’s first harvest resulted in a modest 200 cases of wine from the 1993 vintage. Beginning in the fall of 1994, these 200 cases of wine were marketed exclusively to fine restaurants in New Orleans and on the Northshore.

A 2,400 square foot winery building at the vineyard site was partially completed in time for the 1995 crush which yielded wine production of about 1,500 cases of wine. Most of the 1995 vintage wines were released in the fall of 1996. The winery building was completed in 1996 and that year’s production totaled about 1,800 cases or 4,300 gallons of wine.

In 1997, construction of a French provincial style tasting room and visitors center overlooking the vineyards was completed. Current annual production ranges from approximately 5,000 gallons (2,100 cases) to about 6,900 gallons (2,900 cases) of wine. Pontchartrain Vineyards wines have been awarded over 60 medals (including six (6) Gold medals) in both national and international wine competitions over the last several years, and are well represented in the finer eating establishments and wine stores in the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Northshore areas.

In 2004, the winery was honored by the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group out of New York who selected the winery’s 2000 Le Grand Louis Syrah as one of 27 wines from across America to be included in the Undiscovered Gems part of their All-American Wine List. With the exception of the Greater Houston, Texas area, the wines are generally not available outside the state of Louisiana.

Approximately 13 acres of vines are presently under cultivation and producing. The main varieties grown are Blanc Du Bois (white) and Cynthiana/Norton (red). It is anticipated that estate vineyards will eventually account for about 2,800 cases of the winery’s annual production.

3/3 Can TV Kill You?, Master Sommelier Michael Jordan,Santa Barbara Vintner's Assoc., Mardi Gras at Pat O'Breins

What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

Can Watching Too Much TV Kill You? Nutrition Educator Doug Ingoldsby Will Tell Us If It Can!

We all know that sitting in front of the television set for hours-on-end probably isn't the healthiest thing to do. But in a study published in "Circulation", a journal of American Heart Association, researchers have determined that staring at the Boob Tube isn't just a health hazard… it can actually trigger your premature death.

"In a six-year study of 8,800 adults, scientists found those who watched TV four hours or more per day were 80 percent more likely to die from heart disease and 46 percent more likely to die from any cause than those that watched TV two hours or less," says nutritional educator Doug Ingoldsby. "Each additional hour spent in front of the TV increased the risk of dying from heart disease by 18 percent and the overall risk of death by 11 percent," he said.

Ingoldsby says that 284 people died during the study. What turns TV-watching into a lethal pastime? Ingoldsby says researchers are suggesting marathon TV watchers are dying prematurely because of two factors:
1. Lack of exercise 2. Too many high-calorie TV-time snacks

But Ingoldsby says there is also a very important hidden third factor which plays a major role in triggering premature death for TV addicts. 3. Lack of sun exposure and lethal vitamin D deficiencies

Ingoldsby says a concluded study of 27,686 patients who were 50 years of age or older with no prior history of cardiovascular disease showed that those with very low levels of Vitamin D were 77 percent more likely to die, 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease, and 78 percent were more likely to have a stroke than patients with normal levels. The year-long study of 27,686 adults was administered at the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

About Doug: Doug Ingoldsby, known to radio and TV audience as "The Vitamin Professor, is the founder of ALL ONE® Supplements, manufacturer of the world's first high potency multiple vitamin/mineral/protein powder, ALL ONE. The Ingoldsby family has been in the vitamin business since 1936. Doug's father, James, was responsible for creating the first "high potency" vitamin C tablet, and he also worked with nutritionist Adelle Davis to create the first "stress" formula, many of the first multiple vitamin and mineral combinations and the first nutrition candy bar, "Tiger's Milk."

Are You Ready For MARDI GRAS? Pat O'Brien's Scott Touchton Gets Us Prepared for Mardi Gras Adventures!

Home of the famous "Hurricane," Pat O'Brien's has been and always will be an important part of New Orleans culture. At the end of prohibition in 1933, Pat O'Brien converted his speakeasy to a legitimate drinking establishment in the 600 block of St. Peter Street called, of course, Pat O'Brien's. Business was good and the bar was always filled with neighborhood folks. There was a little upright piano in the corner for entertainment and there was always lively conversation.

A few years later Pat realized that he had outgrown his little space. He and his friend Charlie Cantrell decided to become partners and buy the building at 718 St. Peter Street, the building that is now home to the world famous bar. The structures were originally built circa 1791 and became home to the first French Theater Company in New Orleans.

In the mid 1940's, Pat O'Brien's Bar propelled when the Hurricane Drink was created. At that time, there was short supply of liquor such as whiskey, bourbon and scotch. There was, however, access to rum coming up the river. Bar owners were forced to buy large quantities of rum, 50 cases or so, in order to purchase other liquor. Through trial and error, they came up with a drink that everyone loved! Pat O'Brien paired it up with a glass shaped like a Hurricane lamp and the drink was perfected!

Under the management of George Oechsner Jr., Pat O'Brien's quickly became the most popular bar in New Orleans. The new concept of dueling piano players in the Piano Lounge had everyone dancing in the aisles. The Main Bar was a mainstay for neighborhood friends, and the Patio a perfect place to socialize.

When he was old enough to hold a broom, Mr. Oechsner brought his son, Sonny, to help clean up. As he grew older his job duties changed, and so did his passion for Pat O'Brien's. In the late 1970's, Sonny Oechsner and his father began to buy the business with a vision of greatness. Sonny realized the potential of the brand and pursued the concept of franchising. He also realized the need for private parties and purchased a building on Bourbon Street when opportunity arose. At this time, the company has four independently owned franchises, two restaurants in New Orleans, an online catalog, a bottling plant and endless possibilities.

Even though the corporation has branched out, the main reason for its success is the fervor New Orleanians have for the place. "Even though millions of people visit Pat O's every year, locals are the reason the doors stay open" says Shelly Oechsner Waguespack, Vice President. "Locals are the heart and soul of what we are all about... Passion for fun and life."

3/2 Cinnabar Winemaker George Troquato, Q'ero Restaurant in Encinitas, Larry Lipson's Wine Picks, Sam The Cooking Guy

What's Cookin' Today Hour ONE:

Cinnabar Winemaker George Troquato Tells Us About His Latest Crop

Cinnabar Winery produces award-winning wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains, California’s Central Coast, and other distinguished growing regions such as Sonoma County, the Red Hills of Lake County, the Clements Hills (above Lodi), and Santa Clara Valley.

The Tasting Room is situated along the “Saratoga Wine Trail”, offering daily wine sampling, gift and decorative accessories, custom gift baskets, regional festivals, corporate events and lifestyle seminars.

About George: Winemaker George Troquato always knew he would be in the farming business. “I love agriculture … it follows the seasons,” says George. “There is a beginning, a middle and an end. You do your best to make a wine; then it takes on a life of its own.”

George was born in the southern California city of Riverside. A move north brought him to the town of Los Gatos in 1966. He was an active member of the Future Farmers of America while attending Campbell’s Westmont High School. His father’s grape growing and winemaking hobby introduced George to the wine industry in his pre-teen years.

“I cut my teeth on old vine zinfandel from the Santa Clara Valley,” says George. “Winemaking at the age of 12 is anything but romantic. While other kids were playing baseball, I was helping my dad with a winemaking hobby that became a commercial winery in 1985.”

Intent on continuing the family winemaking tradition, George graduated from the California Polytechnical Institute (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo in 1985 with a degree in crop science.

George gained valuable cellar experience at a few other wineries before joining Cinnabar in 1990. He helped his father at Troquato Vineyards from 1985–88, worked at J. Lohr in 1989 and 1990, and spent the summer of 1990 in the Beaujolais region of France.

“I can’t imagine a more hard working, loyal and committed employee,” said Cinnabar Founder Tom Mudd about his winemaker. “George challenges the status quo and pushes everyone else. In fact, he literally ran from task to task in his early days at Cinnabar.”

Away from the winery, George enjoys quality time with his wife Kristi, daughter Camilla and sons Dominic and Xavier. They have two pets: a Vizsla named Oliver and a Chinese Fighting Fish. He also enjoys cooking, gardening, snow skiing and rollerblading. His favorite food is grilled lamb chops with fresh garlic and rosemary accompanied by a bottle of Cinnabar Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir. He continues to help his father make wine and farm heirloom tomatoes.

George has a profound understanding about the finality of winemaking: “Mother Nature makes a different offering every year, but you only get 20 to 30 vintages in a lifetime.” With many successful harvests under his belt, he is making the most of his chances.

With no fancy equipment and by speaking English instead of ‘chef-speak,' he's sort of the everyman of television cooking. The show is shot right in his house – and he cooks with his kids, dogs and neighbors occasionally around – just like we all do. There's no fois gras... no white truffle oil, no ‘Peruvian mountain-raised squab in sesame-lime-soy marinade stuffed with braised forest turnips and wild inoki mushrooms in a hand pressed plum and raspberry glaze'. He's just a regular guy, using regular words showing how to cook easy, great food... Food that's ‘big in taste and small in effort'. It's a handful of ingredients and a few steps – that's it. This is a cooking show "for the rest of us," he likes to say. And now it's on several networks and stations.

Just Grill This! is Sam's new book and it features Sam the Cooking Guy’s simple and occasionally unconventional recipes for cooking anything on the grill. With his trademark irreverence and humor, Sam demystifies the age-old process of cooking with fire—and he leaves nothing out. From the same guy who brought you Cap’N Crunch Seared Tuna and Mashed Potato Tacos in his second book, you’ll find everything from great dogs and a week’s worth of burgers to seafood and desserts.
