DR. PAULA KAHUMBU – CEO OF WILDLIFEDIRECT - HOW WILDLIFE DIRECT’S PARTNERSHIP WITH AMARULA CREAM LIQUEUR WILL HELP PROTECT AFRICAN ELEPHANTS

Did you know that one elephant is lost to poaching every 15 minutes? African elephants are a keystone species, meaning other species within an ecosystem largely depend on them. Poaching poses a massive threat to their survival, as well as the delicate balance of the ecosystem. It is vital to take steps in their conservation. While the ivory trade is illegal today, it has not been completely eliminated and the African elephant remains endangered.

In anticipation of World Elephant Day, Dr. Paula Kahumbu, the dynamic CEO of the non-profit organization, WildlifeDIRECT, talks about the status of the disappearing African elephant population and what her organization is trying to do to save them, specifically in partnership with Amarula, the award-winning South African cream liqueur. In 2016, they shared the vision to drive conservation through education. Together, they are launching a new campaign called “Don’t Let Them Disappear,” which will help fund programs that protect the African elephant. To kick-off the debut of this campaign, and in an effort to visually showcase the plight of the African elephant, a life-sized elephant ice sculpture titled “The Disappearing Elephant,” will be installed and on display in Manhattan’s Union Square on World Elephant Day, melting and eventually vanishing before spectator’s eyes.
