MICHAEL BEAULAC - GENERAL MANAGER & WINEMAKER, PINE RIDGE VINEYARDS

Established in 1978, Pine Ridge Vineyards produces classically proportioned, expressive wines that embody their history and distinct place of origin.

Pine Ridge founder Gary Andrus, inspired by the illustrious wines of Bordeaux, believed in the Napa Valley’s potential to produce wines of similar stature. He planted the property’s original namesake vineyard on a steeply terraced hillside flanked by a dramatic ridgeline of pine trees in the Stags Leap District. Gary’s pioneering efforts with this first vineyard were met with tremendous success as the Bordeaux varietals he planted – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot – thrived and produced wines of great distinction. In the following years, Pine Ridge continued to acquire exceptional vineyard sites across the region. Today, the Estate’s 200-acres span over five renowned Napa Valley appellations – Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Oakville, Carneros and Howell Mountain.

PHILOSOPHY
ESTATE VINEYARD DISTINCTION
Poised, balanced and classically proportioned, the expressive wines born from our estate vineyards spanning the Napa Valley reflect a distinctive Old World approach to winemaking coupled with a commitment to future sustainability and innovation.

The desire to uncover and showcase the exceptional qualities of the diverse estate vineyards that span 200-acres across five appellations is the core of the Pine Ridge winemaking philosophy. A thirty year relationship with the land brings a deeply layered knowledge of the specific climates, soils and vines of each vineyard. Over the years, a deep knowledge and savoir-faire has developed of which rootstocks do best in each respective vineyard, specific block requirements to produce the most optimal fruit and what each vineyard contributes to the flavor profile of the wines. Every season brings new knowledge and understanding to apply and continuously fine tune the entire growing and production process in order to encourage the fruit – and the wines – a purity of flavor distinct to their site.

03/29 LARRY LIPSON, THE AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT, THE AMAZING RACE ON CBS, PHIL KEOGHAN

LARRY LIPSON - THE AFFORDABLE WINE REPORT

For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Florida weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

EMMY AWARD-NOMINATED HOST PHIL KEOGHAN - HOST, THE AMAZING RACE - NEW SEASON RETURNS ON CBS THURSDAY, MARCH 30

FOR THE FIRST TIME, 22 COMPLETE STRANGERS TEAM UP AT THE STARTING LINE TO BEGIN A RACE AROUND THE WORLD WHEN “THE AMAZING RACE” RETURNS ON A NEW DATE AND TIME, THURSDAY, MARCH 30

THE AMAZING RACE returns this season with a race unlike any before. In a brand new twist, all 22 Racers are complete strangers who will meet on the starting line. Before “GO,” Racers will immediately compete in a challenge that will determine the order for picking a Teammate, based on nothing but first impressions. These new pairs of Teammates will then have mere moments to learn their traveling companion’s name before beginning a race around the world that will span 9 countries, 17 cities and 36,000 miles. The new season of the 10-time Emmy Award-winning series premieres on a new date and time, Thursday, March 30 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

“For years, THE AMAZING RACE fans have suggested we line up complete strangers and match them up at the starting line to see what would happen. These newbie racers begin with no pre-existing relationships or emotional baggage, and the excitement of traveling around the world to complete dozens of gut-busting, mind-blowing challenges quickly ignites tension,” said Phil Keoghan, host of THE AMAZING RACE.

“THE AMAZING RACE, in scope, is the biggest reality show ever created. It brings people from all walks of life together on a global scale, and traditionally sends teams with established relationships on an adrenaline-packed, exotic adventure. However, this season, we are excited to pair complete strangers and see how they handle the pressure of traveling the world with someone they just met,” said co-creator and executive producer Bertram van Munster.

Participants in the 29th Race around the world include an Army Drill Sergeant, a pro snowboarder, a Wall Street banker, an auctioneer and a college drum major, among others. They will begin their journey in Los Angeles and head to their first destination, Panama City. Along the route, Racers will be challenged with building and delivering desks and school supplies to children in Tanzania, skydiving in Norway and bungee jumping 240 feet into the Corinth Canal in Greece. The first team to cross the final finish line will win the one million dollar prize and be crowned the winners of THE AMAZING RACE.

03/23 WELLNESS EXPERT, DR. STEVEN GUNDRY, PLANT PARADOX: THE HIDDEN DANGERS IN HEALTHY FOODS THAT CAUSE DISEASES AND WEIGHT GAIN, TECH JOURNALIST PAUL HOCHMAN, WHY YOUR CAR SHOULD BE SMARTER THAN YOU

WELLNESS EXPERT, DR. STEVEN GUNDRY - AUTHOR, PLANT PARADOX: THE HIDDEN DANGERS IN HEALTHY FOODS THAT CAUSE DISEASES AND WEIGHT GAIN

"Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in Healthy Foods That Cause Diseases and Weight Gain"

Most of us have heard of gluten—a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we’ve been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox, renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect them from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.
At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically proven program with readers around the world.

The simple (and daunting) fact is, lectins are everywhere. Thankfully, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks we easily can employ to avoid them, including:

  • Peel your veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content.
  • Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption.
  • Swap your brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress—and are full of lectins.
  • With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowl—and shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way.

ABOUT DR. GUNDRY:
Dr. Gundry practices as director at The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, and as founder and director at The Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, California. A Yale graduate, he is a double board certified surgeon and has been practicing medicine for over 40 years. Working mostly at Loma Linda University as a cardiologist, Gundry has pioneered minimally invasive surgical techniques, xenotransplantation and pediatric heart surgery.  Almost a decade later, his first book “Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution: Turn Off the Genes That Are Killing You and Your Waistline” (Random House) still sits on Amazon.com’s list of Top 20 diet books. In April 2017, HarperCollins will publish his long-awaited sophomore book, “The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in ‘Healthy’ Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain.”

Strawberry revelry is ripest when the 34th Annual California Strawberry Festival kicks off the summer fun May 20 and 21, 2017 on the newly expanded acreage at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard.  More than 1.5 million strawberries will be consumed over the weekend’s iconic berry spectacular.

Ranked nationwide among the top outdoor Festivals, the fruity fete boasts lip-smacking strawberries every way imaginable with live concerts on multiple stages, more than 200 Fine Arts & Crafts booths, the Strawberry Promenade with celebrity cooking demonstrations, Strawberryland For Kids with rides and attractions, gooey contests, and more.

Strawberry pizza alongside a strawberry beer is just a sampling of the delicacies where the region’s most prolific crop is the main ingredient for goodness. Other favorites include strawberry nachos, strawberry funnel cake, strawberry crepes, chocolate dipped strawberries, fried strawberries, and strawberry smoothies. With selections from 50 food booths, those who wish to control their destiny can visit the “build you own” strawberry shortcake tent to pile on the sweetness.

Best of all, indulging is guilt free. With each bite of berry bliss from the non-profit food booths, 100% of sales support their causes. The formula has proved to be a fruitful enterprise with close to $5 million dollars benefiting a multitude of southland charities over the past decades.

“This year we’re enhancing the Festival experience with a 50% expansion of the Festival grounds,” says California Strawberry Festival Chairperson Kim Gibas. “As volunteers, we work year round to produce a first class event. We’re excited because the added acreage and new footprint gives us the opportunity to double the fun.”

Oxnard is located just 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. The free Park & Ride “Strawberry Express” shuttles from multiple convenient locations off the 101 freeway make getting there a breeze. Amtrak California offers a special Kids Ride Free promotion Festival weekend (shuttles meet the trains). Parking is also available on site for $10. Address: 3250 South Rose Avenue, Oxnard.

California Strawberry Festival general admission is $12, seniors 62+ and active military are $8, and youths ages 5-12 are $5. Kids 4 and under are free. The California Strawberry Festival toll free information line is 888 288-9242.

I have gathered all my family recipes from my earliest memories of baking cakes and breads with my mum and sisters on a Saturday to comforting suppers that I love to eat when I go home to my more sophisticated Irish menus I cooked for the Taoiseach of Ireland. 03/16 CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH & NUTRITIONIST MEGAN GILMORE, NO EXCUSES DETOX, DONNY SEBASTIANI, DON SEBASTIANI & CO.

CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH &  NUTRITIONIST MEGAN GILMORE - AUTHOR, NO EXCUSES DETOX - TOP 5 EXCUSES PEOPLE EAT POORLY & 100 QUICK, CHEAP, NUTRITIOUS, DELICIOUS FIXES

Megan Gilmore, hears many all-too-familiar excuses from her readers and nutrition clients when it comes to not eating well on a regular basis. As a former junk food lover turned highly sought-after nutrition consultant, she knows what it takes to successfully make the switch. In her new book, NO EXCUSES DETOX: 100 RECIPES TO HELP YOU EAT HEALTHY EVERY DAY, she debunks the 5 most common excuses for not eating healthily on a regular basis and offers solutions that satisfy even the pickiest, busiest and most budget-conscious eaters.

EXCUSE #1: I don’t have enough time.
By far the most common excuse out there, and for good reason. As a society, we are busier than ever, and cooking healthful meals from scratch can certainly be more time-consuming than picking up a prepared meal on the way home from work or heating up a frozen pizza. You can make healthy eating a priority in as little as 30 minutes, e.g. prepping your meals for the week while watching a 30-minute show on Netflix.

EXCUSE #2: It’s too expensive.
Fresh organic produce may cost more than the conventionally grown variety and pasture-raised animal products are more expensive than factory-farmed animal products, but that doesn’t mean that healthy eating has to break the bank. Megan shares plenty of budget-friendly meal ideas (along with the price per serving, so you can budget accordingly), so your grocery bill goes down simply by preparing more whole-food meals at home. Many packaged foods, such as potato chips, soda and cookies— especially those with a brand name or a “healthy” marketing label— are more expensive than simply choosing whole foods in the first place.

EXCUSE #3: My family is too picky.
Even if you’re the only person in your home who wants to eat healthier, you shouldn’t have to become a short-order cook. It may take time for everyone in your household to make the transition, but gradually introducing higher quality foods and trying a new recipe each week is a great way to help your family
establish healthier eating habits while expanding their palates. Make it a priority!

EXCUSE #4: I’m always on the go.
If you have to travel often for work, feel as if you’re always in your car or simply aren’t around your kitchen much, you can still eat well on the go—as long as you make it a priority. Sticking to your healthy eating goals is more important than ever when you’re on the go because your immune system is closely tied to your gut health. When you eat nutrient-rich foods, you’ll give your immune system a much-needed boost and help reduce your chances of catching a cold, even if you’re exposed to more germs than usual in a crowded dance studio, child’s soccer game or busy airport.

EXCUSE #5: I can’t control my cravings.
Whether you’re on a diet or not, it’s totally natural to crave a sweet treat or salty snack every now and then. However, if your cravings feel out of control or start to occur more frequently, there could be a valid reason why.

DONNY SEBASTIANI, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF DON SEBASTIANI & CO. AND A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY’S FOURTH GENERATION

ABOUT DON SEBASTIANI & SONS:
Don Sebastiani & Sons is a family-owned company rooted in the Sonoma Valley, with a winery in the Napa Valley. Since 1904, the family’s adventures have often included making and marketing products complementary to wine, and today, products range from wine to water and tequila, to pistachios, almonds, and cashews, all sourced from premier growing regions throughout the world--natural, healthy beverages and foods to complement life’s special occasions and celebrations with family and friends.  The company was recently named one of the Best Places to Work by the North Bay Business Journal for the fourth consecutive year.

Today, fourth-generation proprietor Donny Sebastiani is expanding his family’s vision to include other aspects of the “Mediterranean Diet” to create a “Happy Hour At Home”, with such products as:

Small-lot, single-vineyard wines from Sonoma.  Including Chardonnay grown on Donny Sebastiani’s home ranch.

Premium, seasoned almonds, pistachios and cashews called U Gottabee Nutz.
Organic flavored sparkling water: AquaJava, AquaKola and AquaMocha.
Craft 100% Blue Weber agave Tequilas grown and hand-made in Jalisco, Mexico: Contigo Plata, El Fumador Reposado, and El Macho Anejo.

NEW RELEASE: CUSTARD CHARDONNAY

Don Sebastiani & Sons, the Sonoma-based, family-owned producer of innovative wine introduces its 2015 Custard Chardonnay, a wine made from 100% North Coast AVA Chardonnay grapes and hand-crafted to be the ultimate “comfort wine.”

With 14.5% alcohol, the Custard 2015 Chardonnay is sturdy enough to pair with a variety of dishes, most notably a butternut squash ravioli and roasted seasonal vegetables. Yet its rich aromas of toasted almond and dried apricots, combined with evocative flavors of pear, citrus and vanilla, are smooth and silky enough to make it an uncompromising stand-alone sipper.

“Cozy isn’t a word you often hear to describe a wine, but that’s what our Custard Chardonnay is,” said Donny Sebastiani, President and CEO of Don Sebastiani & Co., and a member of the family’s fourth generation. “It’s comforting, evoking memories of family meals around grandma’s kitchen table, yet bright and lively on the palate, the perfect accompaniment to make those everyday moments memorable.”

As elegant as it is accessible, the 2015 Custard Chardonnay fits comfortably within the Sebastiani family’s vision of creating “Happy Hour at Home” opportunities. Recently, Don Sebastiani & Sons has introduced product lines complementary to its core wine portfolio, including premium, seasoned nuts; organic, flavored sparkling water; and three 100% Blue Weber gave Tequilas grown and hand-made in Jalisco, Mexico.

According to winemaker Gloria Mercado–Martín, the 2015 Custard Chardonnay is fermented in stainless steel at lower temperatures using a specially selected yeast strain and gentle stirring of the lees. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation to enhance body and add a subtle creaminess, before it is aged in new French Oak, which imparts toasty almond and vanilla notes.

Custard is one of 14 brands in the Don Sebastiani & Sons portfolio of fine California wines, built on the family’s 112-year winemaking tradition, all of it in the coveted North Coast AVA, encompassing Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake Counties, among other areas.  This premier winemaking region bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Pablo Bay to the south is known for producing grapes of surpassing quality and wines of distinctive character.

“Our family has been producing wines in this region since 1904, and our 2015 Custard Chardonnay exemplifies the century of care and experience that goes into every bottle,” added Donny Sebastiani.

Custard 2015 North Coast Chardonnay is available in both restaurants and select retail stores across the United States; the suggested retail price is $21.99.

NATIONAL FOOD/TRAVEL TOPIC HE CAN DISH ON:
Eating Where the Locals Eat: I travel a lot. Long ago, I found the worst suggestions come from the concierge, who'll send you to a Continental restaurant at the top of a bank building for veal parmesan. The best suggestions...come from the parking valets, the bellmen -- the folks who eat local, and eat good. Cab drivers too. They've led me to amazing places.

03/13 DR. LORI MOSCA, TIPS FOR LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE, ALBERTO ÁVALOS, HISPANIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION, COORS LIGHT LÍDER OF THE YEAR

EXPERT IN PREVENTATIVE CARDIOLOGY AND AUTHOR DR. LORI MOSCA - TIPS FOR LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE WITH A HEALTHY HEART

March is National Nutrition Month and expert in preventative cardiology Dr. Lori Mosca has tips for living a healthy life with a healthy heart.

Since March is National Nutrition Month, it’s a perfect time to make serious changes to your lifestyle to help promote your heart health and feel your best. Eating a balanced diet, exercise, and sleep can all make a different.  Another easy change is adding cocoa flavanols to your daily routine.

Sufficient, quality sleep can help to reduce stress, positively impact your metabolism and improve your body’s overall function.

Exercising regularly should be a top priority. It helps to give your circulatory system a workout to help keep your muscles and heart in good working condition.

Dietary guidelines from the American Heart Association recommend a healthy dietary pattern focused on nutrient-dense foods, such as a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, nuts and skinless poultry and fish.

Another healthy option to consider adding to your diet is cocoa flavanols, which are beneficial plant-based nutrients (phytonutrients) found naturally in cocoa.

ALBERTO ÁVALOS - INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM MANAGER FOR THE HISPANIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION -  COORS LIGHT LÍDER OF THE YEAR SHARES TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Líder of the Year Shares Tips for Success
Alberto Ávalos to Be Recognized as the 2016 Coors Light Líder of the Year

Alberto Ávalos, the 2016 Coors Light Líder of the Year, will receive a $25,000 grant to develop a leadership program in Los Angeles for the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that identifies, inspires, prepares, and connects Latino leaders in communities across the country.

The Coors Light Líderes program has recognized and highlighted the achievements of emerging Latino leaders through an online public voting competition, a national and local advertising campaign and robust community outreach. Alberto was among 12 Latino leaders nominated by local and national nonprofit organizations for their leadership and contributions to their communities.

Through his early professional work and dedicated volunteerism, Alberto learned that the opportunity gap in technology for Latinos was largely due to the lack of access to technology and meaningful computer science education. This prompted him to launch Coding Jam, an interactive introduction to computer science, in his hometown of Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles.

Alberto is a passionate community leader who is dedicated to helping younger generations achieve their educational goals by providing them with opportunities and access to technology. The Coors Light Líderes program has been honoring the importance of leadership in the Hispanic community by empowering up-and-coming Latino leaders to go further while making a difference in the lives of others. Coors Light works with its nonprofit partners to give back and help build stronger communities for everyone.

Since 2006, the Coors Light Líderes program has raised awareness and highlighted the achievements of emerging leaders within the Hispanic community through the online public voting competition and a national advertising campaign. The program offers up-and-coming Latino professionals leadership tools, counsel and the opportunity to network. The time to nominate the 2017 Coors Light Líder of the Year begins on March 9 until April 27.

MORE ABOUT ALBERTO AVALOS:
Alberto Ávalos was raised in the Boyle Heights neighborhood in East Los Angeles, and after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he spent time in the Bay Area working on civic innovation issues. Alberto partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) and was able to secure a venue with computers, recruit Latino employees from Google for support, and have more than 50 neighborhood students at the first Coding Jam workshop. Alberto's passion is leveraging technology across industries and working with communities in creating economic empowerment.

03/07 ROBERT GRABER, THE GRABER OLIVE HOUSE, SUTEE NITAKORN, KAANAPALI GOLF COURSES

ROBERT GRABER - THE GRABER OLIVE HOUSE, ONTARIO (SINCE 1894)

Californians of today are indebted to the foresight of the Franciscan missionaries from Spain, who planted the first olive trees at the Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769.

Olive trees flourished, and it became a tradition of the early Californians to set their tables with plenty of fruits and wine, and always olives, whose nut-like flavor and healthfulness were highly esteemed.

C.C. Graber purchased land in Ontario and discovered olives, as cured by the early ranchers, to be one of the finest food delicacies of California.

After much research and study of their methods, Mr. Graber cured several barrels himself.

The following season a much greater quantity of his olives was demanded by neighbors and friends who had eaten from the original barrels.

Thus began Ontario's oldest existing business. Since 1894, Graber Olives -- fully tree-ripened with delicate, rich flavor and succulent texture -- continue to be enjoyed by generations of families throughout the world.

The Graber Groves are now located in the San Joaquin Valley.

During harvest time (October through December), the historic Graber Olive House pulsates with the activities of grading, curing, and canning.

Visitors are offered guided tours of the facility year round, and may browse leisurely in the two gift shops which feature Graber Olives, fine foods, and gifts.
