4/30 LARRY LIPSON, ALISSA SEGERSTEN, TOM MALTERRE, WHOLE LIFE NUTRITION COOKBOOK

LARRY LIPSON - WINE REPORT FROM FLORIDA

For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Costa Rica weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

ALISSA SEGERSTEN & TOM MALTERRE - WHOLE LIFE NUTRITION COOKBOOK: A COMPLETE NUTRITIONAL AND COOKING GUIDE FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Alissa Segersten and Tom Malterre, the husband-and-wife team behind the popular Nourishing Meals website, have written the ultimate cook on the importance of living a whole foods lifestyle (and how to transition into one) while taking into account that we are all unique individuals with different genetics and nutritional needs.

In THE WHOLE LIFE NUTRTION COOKBOOK, Alissa and Tom provide an in depth roadmap of all the current diet trends and how to adapt them to best serve your individual needs. They first answer the question, “What is Whole Life Nutrition, exactly?” and explain why it’s crucial. It’s not enough to simply look at a diet and its impact on health; instead we must take into account everything being ingested into our bodies, from the food we eat to the water we drink and the air we breathe. THE WHOLE LIFE NUTRITION COOKBOOK (published by Grand Central Life & Style) also shows readers how to prepare foods that promote optimal health, prevent disease, and energize the body. With over 300 delicious, nourishing recipes, readers will discover new ways to cook whole grains, fish, poultry, meat and veggies.

Tom Malterre MS, CN holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree in nutrition from Bastyr University. Tom is a faculty member of the Autism Research Institute, a member of the medical affairs team at Thorne Research, and a clinical nutritionist for Whole Life Nutrition. He has been invited to speak at the Washington Association for Naturopathic Physicians, the Ontario Association for Naturopathic Physicians, the British Columbia Association for Naturopathic Physicians, the International College of Integrative Medicine, the National College for Naturopathic Medicine, Boucher Institute for Naturopathic Medicine, the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, and Bastyr University. Tom has trained with the Institute for Functional Medicine for the last 7 years and is soon to be one of the first practitioners with an advanced certification in functional medicine. Tom specializes in whole body wellness, looking at all factors of a person's life to bring about healing. Stress, environmental toxicants, nutritional deficiencies, and epigenetics all contribute to a decline in health. Whole Life Nutrition encompasses all aspects of life to get to the root of the health issues.

Alissa Segersten received her Bachelor's of Science in Nutrition from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. She is the previous owner of a Personal Chef business in Seattle, Washington that successfully addressed the health and lifestyle needs of many families with her delicious, healthy cooking. She is currently a cooking instructor, empowering people with cooking skills and knowledge of whole foods so that they may reconnect with the pleasure in eating delicious, nourishing food. Between her two cookbooks and blog, she has created over 700 recipes.

WINK MARTINDALE - THE ROCKET FIZZ SODA POP AND CANDY SHOPS

The Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops are one stop shops for all of your soda pop and candy cravings. There are thousands of bottled soda pops and candies from all over America, including some from other galaxies. The gigantic selection will launch you back in time to when you were a kid—even if you are over a hundred light years old. And if you are a kid, don't plan on growing up when you are inside of a Rocket Fizz store. Rocket Fizz is a lot of fun and nostalgic. There are hundreds of retro and gag gifts, and concert posters and movie posters, and tin signs too. The inventory is always expanding, just like outer-space. So if you want to have fun then fly on over in your space ship and cruise around a Rocket Fizz universe. Just be careful of those two alien Rocket Fizz founders and company owners—Robert (Rob) Powells and Ryan Morgan. No human ever knows what they are up to. They are always full of galactic surprises and a close encounter with either one of them can be very unpredictable. Rob tends to give away free candy whenever he is inside of a corporate store. And Ryan tends to give away a universe of soda pop knowledge. If his mouth is moving he is either chewing on candy or talking soda pop.

4/21 COLMAN ANDREWS, MY USUAL TABLE: A LIFE IN RESTAURANTS, LAURY POLAND, FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY

COLMAN ANDREWS - MY USUAL TABLE - A LIFE IN RESTAURANTS

From food writer, James Beard award-winning cookbook author, and co-founder of Saveur magazine, Colman Andrews, comes MY USUAL TABLE: A Life in Restaurants (Ecco; April 2014), a vivid memoir of a life lived in food. From his Hollywood childhood through his days in the music business, his first forays into restaurant reviewing, and his ever-evolving career as a food writer and magazine editor — not to mention the course of his obsessive traveling and complicated personal life — Andrews has seen the world mostly from the dining room. In MY USUAL TABLE, he interweaves his own story with intimate tales of the seminal restaurants and the great chefs and restaurateurs of our time who are emblematic of the revolutions large and small that have forever transformed the way we eat, cook, and feel about food.

In sixteen chapters, each anchored by the story of his love affair with a cherished restaurant, Andrews evokes the unforgettable meals he has eaten over a lifetime, and the remarkable people with whom he has shared them, tracing the evolution not just of our restaurants but our whole food culture. Beginning with a post-war childhood spent at Chasen’s, the glamorous Old Hollywood hangout where studio heads and celebrities rubbed shoulders, Andrews charts a course through the 60’s, when both he and Americans at large fell for the novel “ethnic” food at spots like neo-Polynesian Trader Vic’s or Mexican institution El Coyote. As Andrews began traveling for his writing and magazine career in the 70’s and 80’s, he spent countless hours in the family run cafés of Paris and trattorias of Rome. The timeless dishes so common on their menus, focused on local and seasonal ingredients, would not only come to profoundly influence Andrews’ palate, but also transform the American foodscape forever. In a STARRED review, Publishers Weekly says:

“A fond salute to many of his favorite culinary haunts marks this charming autobiographical omnibus by accomplished cookbook author, longtime reviewer, and cofounder of Saveur, Andrews. In his lively, frank prose, Andrews unfurls a lifetime of intuitive restaurant searching… Since many of these restaurants have vanished in the fumes of time, Andrews offers no less than a veritable historical trove.”

From Andrews’s usual table, he has watched the growth of nouvelle cuisine and fusion cuisine; the explosion of the organic and locavore movements; the rise of nose-to-tail eating; and so-called “molecular gastronomy.” The bistros, brasseries, and cafes he has loved have not only influenced culinary trends at home and abroad, but represent the changing history and culture of food in America and Western Europe. And all along, Andrews has been there right there in the dining room, menu in one hand and notebook in the other.

Her love for ice cream has taken her to more ice cream shops that she can count. Enjoying various scoops throughout her childhood quickly translated into a passion for all things ice cream as an adult. After eating ice cream made by other people for nearly 30 years, Lindsay decided to buy an ice cream maker of her own. With each new batch of ice cream, she set out to create a flavor that was more interesting or more intriguing than the last. Lindsay decided to share her creations with the world, and in 2009 the Scoop Adventures blog was born.

As she kept churning scoops and writing blog posts, word got out about Lindsay's blog and her obsession with ice cream. People started to take notice and soon enough she was approached to write the Scoop Adventures cookbook, which features a collection of recipes from shop owners who are passionate about their homemade product as well as original creations from Lindsay. She is excited to see what the ice cream world will bring her in the future!

Jim Fox - Patine Cellars

As a professional athlete, everything is about wins and losses, and even though this intense competition is extremely rewarding, I realized after retiring from the NHL that wine brought me something that was very different, but just as fulfilling.  A games’ final score can be so “black and white,” and while wine is scored and rated, it is the many various intangible rewards that I have grown to love.  Wine is about the art, the process and the creation, as much as it is about the results.  It brings the day-to-day challenge of striving for the best but also offers the artistic element of working alongside Mother Nature.  Wine’s intrigue is so encompassing that I literally can’t wait for the next chance to create something special with critically acclaimed winemaker Mike Smith -- and taste that next glass of Patiné!

Jim has been with the Los Angeles Kings organization since 1980. After a successful 10 year playing career with the Los Angeles Kings, Jim reached as high as 5th on the Kings all-time points list and currently sits 9th. In 1990, he continued off-ice as the team’s director of community relations and, subsequently, as an Emmy Award-winning TV analyst.

Jim and wife Susie discovered their love of wine enjoying special moments with family and friends. These experiences inspired Jim to become a diligent student of wine, including frequent trips to the world’s top wine regions of Europe and California.

As co-founder of Patiné Cellars, Jim actively manages daily business operations including the direction of sales, marketing and production.

DAVE KOZ – DAVE KOZ AND FRIENDS AT SEA: CRUISE OF A LIFETIME

Dave Koz and Friends at Sea
September 5 - 12, 2014 - Royal Caribbean - Radiance of the Seas
Vancouver, BC • Skagway • Tracy Arm Fjord • Juneau • Ketchikan, Alaska

Nine-time GRAMMY nominee Dave Koz remembers the first record he ever purchased Tower of Powers 1974 album, Back To Oakland. It had a powerful impact on him, as his latest album "Summer Horns" shows. Teaming up with three of his most talented and trusted colleagues Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and Mindi Abair Koz revisited the music that made him want to pick up the saxophone in the first place: classic tracks from Tower of Power and other brassy juggernauts that ruled the airwaves from the late 1960s through the 70s bands like Sly & the Family Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears.

Over the decades, the saxophone has opened numerous doors for Koz. Hes played with such artists as Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Shelby Lynne, Kenny Loggins, U2, Barry Manilow, Michael McDonald, Luther Vandross and Rod Stewart. Hes become a platinum-selling artist with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is also known as a humanitarian, entrepreneur, radio host and instrumental music advocate.

Born and raised in Los Angeles San Fernando Valley, Dave initially just saw the saxophone as a way to help him gain entry into his big brothers band. What began as a ploy became a lifelong obsession. After graduating from UCLA, Koz decided to become a professional musician. Within weeks of that decision, he was recruited as a touring member of Bobby Caldwells band. It was during this time that Koz befriended keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who invited Koz to come play on one of his tours. That stint was followed by a fourteen-month tour with pop singer Richard Marx.

Signed to Capitol Records by Bruce Lundvall, Koz released his self-titled solo debut album in 1990. This was the first in a body of best-selling work, which includes the gold-certified Lucky Man (1993), Off The Beaten Path (1996), and the holiday-themed albums December Makes Me Feel This Way (1997) and Dave Koz & Friends A Smooth Jazz Christmas (2001). His gold-certified fifth album, The Dance (1999), spawned no less than five Top 5 contemporary jazz hits. Saxophonic (2003) produced another four Top 5 singles and garnered Koz two Grammy nominations spanning two consecutive years.

In 2007, Koz released two chart-topping collections of standards. At The Movies, his lush, romantic celebration of timeless melodies from cinema, spent 12 weeks atop Billboards Top Contemporary Jazz chart. Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, it was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category. Memories Of A Winters Night, a festive collection of holiday standards, hit No. 1 on Billboards Top Contemporary Jazz chart in December 2007. Dave Koz At The Movies Double Feature CD + DVD followed in early 2008, which featured the At The Movies CD with two never-before-released bonus audio tracks, a new DVD and a track-by-track commentary.

Capitol Records released Dave Koz Greatest Hits, his first-ever retrospective album, in the fall of 2008 and it debuted at No. 1 on both Billboards Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and iTunes Jazz Album chart. The collection included many of Kozs smash singles including Castle of Dreams, Cant Let You Go featuring the late Luther Vandross, Together Again, Honey-Dipped and All I See Is You plus four new brand new songs. Lead single Life In The Fast Lane, which Koz co-wrote with writer/producer Darren Rahn, spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the R&R Monitored Smooth Jazz chart. It was followed by the Top 5 single Bada Bing.

Hello Tomorrow Daves first album for Concord Records debuted at No. 1 on both Billboards Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and iTunes Jazz Album chart and was named the Best Smooth Jazz Album of 2010 by iTunes. The CD was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Hailed as an event record by The New York Times, its lead single, Put The Top Down, spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the Mediabase Smooth A/C chart the longest stint at No. 1 of any of Kozs chart-topping hits. Ultimate Christmas, featuring 18 perennial holiday classics performed by Koz, bowed in 2011 on Capitol/EMI. Live at the Blue Note Tokyo, Kozs first-ever live CD, was released by Concord Records in 2012 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

Koz and his friends Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and Mindi Abair turned to producer Paul Brown (Al Jarreau, George Benson, June Tabor, Boney James) to help them realize the vision for Summer Horns (2013, Concord Records). The album also features trumpeter/flugelhornist Rick Braun, trombonist Brian Culbertson, vocalists Michael McDonald, Jeffrey Osborne and Jonathan Butler plus arrangements by Greg Adams (Tower of Power) and Tom Scott. Topping it off is a sax-only rendition of Take Five with Gordon Goodwin offering his arrangement to the quartet and a new original composition, Summer Horns. The album was honored with a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album and an NAACP Image Awards nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album.

Dave is constantly touring, with annual summer and holiday tours, and Dave Koz & Friends At Sea cruises. He also continues to flex his mass-communications muscles as a radio personality. On the weekends, he hosts the syndicated Dave Koz Radio Show now in its 19th year and airing in approximately 50 markets.

As an entrepreneur, Koz founded Rendezvous Entertainment. As a philanthropist, he has served for 19 years as global ambassador for the Starlight Childrens Foundation. Dave recently partnered with premium Santa Barbara winemaker Terravant, Whole Foods Market and California Pizza Kitchen to introduce four new types of KOZ wines. He is donating all his proceeds from KOZ wines to help Starlight continue its vital mission. Koz completed a four-year term on the Grammy Foundation Artists Committee, has served as National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) and is an ongoing member of the Board Of Governors for the Grammy Foundation.

To this day, Koz is transfixed by the sound of summer horns that swept him away nearly 40 years ago and as he continues his efforts as an instrumental music advocate hes living proof that the opportunities are limitless when you shoot for the stars and are armed with your favorite instrument.

4/9 TYLER LABINE, HULU, DEADBEAT, JEFFREY WEISS, CHARCUTERÍA: THE SOUL OF SPAIN

TYLER LABINE - COMEDY ACTOR STARS IN HULU ORIGINAL SERIES...DEADBEAT

In Deadbeat, which premieres April 9, Tyler — who’s starred in TV series such as Reaper, Boston Legal and Animal Practice as well as the blockbuster hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes — stars as Kevin, a NYC medium who helps ghosts resolve their unfinished business; Cat plays celebrity psychic Camomile White whose talents may not be as genuine as she claims.
So You Think You Can Dance Host Cat Deeley and Comedy Actor Tyler Labine Star in Hulu Original Series... DEADBEAT

In the quirky new supernatural comedy Deadbeat, which premiered on Hulu on April 9, Tyler Labine stars as Kevin, a hapless New York City medium trying to help ghosts settle their unfinished business. Cat Deeley makes her scripted comedy debut as the celebrity psychic Camomile White, who has parlayed her talent into a business empire.

Tyler Labine starred in the CW hit drama Reaper, the ABC series Boston Legal and Invasion, as well as the NBC sitcom Animal Practice. He’ll next star in the Fox series Guidance with Ryan Reynolds. His big-screen credits include The Rise of the Planet of the Apes (he played James Franco’s lab assistant Franklin who inadvertently spread the virus that caused the end of mankind), My Boss’ Daughter and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

***“Deadbeat” is now available for on-demand viewing on Hulu.com***

JEFFREY WEISS - CHARCUTERÍA: THE SOUL OF SPAIN

Charcutería: The Soul of Spain is the first book to introduce authentic Spanish butchering and meat-curing techniques to the American market. Included are more than 100 traditional Spanish recipes, straightforward illustrations providing easy-to-follow steps for amateur and professional butchers, and gorgeous full-color photography of savory dishes, Iberian countrysides, and centuries-old Spanish cityscapes.

Author Jeffrey Weiss has written an entertaining, extravagantly detailed guide on Spain's unique cuisine and its history of charcutería, which is deservedly becoming more celebrated on the global stage. While Spain stands cheek-to-jowl with other great cured-meat-producing nations like Italy and France, the charcuterie traditions of Spain are perhaps the least understood of this trifecta. Americans have most likely never tasted the sheer eye-rolling deliciousness that is cured Spanish meats: chorizo, the garlic-and-pimentón-spiked ambassador of Spanish cuisine; morcilla, the family of blood sausages flavoring regional cuisine from Barcelona to Badajoz; and jamón, the acorn-scented, modern-day crown jewel of Spain's charcutería legacy.

Charcutería: The Soul of Spain is a collection of delicious recipes, uproarious anecdotes, and time-honored Spanish culinary traditions. The author has amassed years of experience working with the cured meat traditions of Spain, and this book will surely become a standard guide for both professional and home cooks.

4/8 PATRICK DAWSON, VINTAGE BEER, ELLEN MILLER, BETTER HOMES & GARDENS, BEST NEW PRODUCT AWARDS

PATRICK DAWSON - AUTHOR AND BEER AFICIONADO - VINTAGE BEER: A TASTER’S GUIDE TO BREWS THAT IMPROVE OVER TIME

VINTAGE BEER is not what's left over from the case after the cookout.  There are beers and ales that improve with age, much like fine wine: Barleywines, Imperial Stouts, Belgian Quads, Flanders Red Ales.  They are (relatively) inexpensive and can be found in any high end liquor store.  And the beer that costs $2/bottle today will be worth more than ten times that in a year or two.  Talk about a liquid investment!

Sure, that Bud or Coors Light is better now than it will be next week, but all that it will give you is a big gut and a hangover.

You can make an investment in VINTAGE BEER - beer that starts great and winds up sublime.
Like good wine, certain beers can be aged under the right conditions, a process that enhances and changes their flavors in interesting and delicious ways. Good candidates for aging are high-alcohol brews, bottle-conditioned beers with yeast in the bottle, barleywines, lambics, and winter ales. Patrick Dawson explains how to identify a cellar-worthy beer, how to plan and set up a beer cellar, what to look for when tasting vintage beers, and the fascinating science behind the aging process. He also includes a comprehensive buying guide to help you select already-aged beers (from the readily available to the tantalizingly rare) to enjoy as your own collection is aging.

SUSAN ZIRINSKY - EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, “48 HOURS: WOUNDED BY LOVE” APRIL 5, 2014, 10:00 PM ET/PT

A LOVER IS SHOT DEAD – IS A CELL PHONE VIDEO RECORDED IN THE AFTERMATH ENOUGH TO CLEAR OR CONVICT?

A lover is shot dead.  Police record a cell phone video in the aftermath. But will the grainy footage be enough to clear or convict a girlfriend? Troy Roberts and 48 HOURS investigate the death of Phillip Peatross and what happened in the bedroom of his girlfriend, Caryn Kelley, in “Wounded by Love” to be broadcast April 5, 2014 (10:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The story unfolds in Kelley’s Orlando, Fla., home, in the dark, early morning hours after a night where the couple has been drinking. It’s a case that involves broken hearts, bombshell secrets and a controversial cell phone video shot by police moments after the death of Peatross.

“I jumped out of bed, grabbed the gun, and heard footsteps coming down the hallway toward my bedroom,” Kelley tells Roberts as she recounts that fateful night. “The gun was cocked because I didn’t know who it was, because I felt like it was an intruder.”

Kelley told police she then realized the ‘intruder’ was actually her boyfriend, Peatross. Kelley became the only living witness to what happened next. Kelley says there was a struggle for her gun. “And he told me twice, ‘I’m not gonna live my life without you.’ And he shot himself,” she tells Roberts.

The police had to sort out three scenarios – either Peatross’ death was an accident, suicide or murder. “There’s no way that he would have ever killed himself,” says Peatross’ previous girlfriend, Tamara Lawton. “He wouldn’t leave his children. He loved those girls, loved them like I’ve not probably seen in any father.”
Police were leery of Kelley’s story. They interviewed her on cell phone video immediately following the shooting. That video became important to the case when police claim she changed her version of what happened that night a couple of times in later interviews. Famed Orlando chief medical examiner and reality show star Dr. Jan Garavaglia also had doubts about Kelley’s version of events.

“If you point a loaded gun at somebody or bring a loaded gun out into the argument, and that gun goes off and kills somebody, that’s not an accident,” Garavaglia tells 48 HOURS. “That’s a homicide.” Kelley was arrested and charged with Peatross’ murder. But could prosecutors use what they say are Kelley’s different versions of the night Peatross died - along with Garavaglia’s autopsy findings - to build their case and get a conviction?

Roberts and the 48 HOURS team tell the story through interviews with Kelley, her attorney Diana Tennis, Dr. Garavaglia, Peatross’ friends and trial testimony. 48 HOURS: “Wounded by Love” is produced by Paul LaRosa and Michele Feuer. Alicia Tejada is the field producer. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer. Chat with members of the 48 HOURS team during the broadcast on Twitter and Facebook.

Kurt is one of the 71 million Americans living with high cholesterol.1 Whether on the field or off, Kurt’s experience playing in the NFL taught him the importance of committing to small, achievable wins to stay healthy and identify a personalized treatment plan.

Through the First and Goal campaign website, patients like Kurt can now access educational tools and resources to help manage their heart health. With seven-in-ten adult Internet users reporting that they have searched online for health information, these resources are greatly needed in the high cholesterol patient community.

As national spokesperson for First and Goal, Kurt Warner will share his experiences with high cholesterol.  Similar to Kurt’s journey to the NFL—from working nights stocking shelves at a grocery store to support his dreams to winning the Super Bowl 18 months later—Kurt maintained a positive, persevering attitude and knew that his small steps toward progress would eventually lead to achieving his goal.

LARRY MANETTI – ACTOR, AUTHOR & RADIO HOST

Larry Manetti started acting in his hometown of Chicago. After studying acting with the Ted List Theater Players, Larry drove to Los Angeles in 1972. Larry landed an agent and was sent to Universal Studios to audition for an opening as a contract player. Luck was on his side. Jack Webb was casting a new series for NBC called The Chase. Larry played a young detective. After attending acting school at Sal Dano's at night and doing bit parts by day, he scored. Baa Baa Black Sheep was being produced and cast at Universal, and the now famous writer Stephen J. Cannell was the executive producer and the role was a natural for Larry. He was cast as a cocky, hot shot pilot named Bobby Boyle. The show was a big hit for NBC but was cancelled within two years. Because the network was so impressed with Larry's on-screen presence, they cast him in a new series called The Duke. Bad luck! The Duke was cancelled in one year. Larry was back to playing whatever Universal told him to. Hoping to catch lighting in a jar, along came Magnum, P.I. and the role of Rick. This was his elevator...the show became a mega-hit for 8 years. Since Magnum, P.I., Larry has done co-starring roles in 25 feature films and guest starred on many hot TV shows. Larry is the author of a book titled Aloha Magnum.

CHEF EVAN BROCKMAN - NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY DAY

Culinary background - My cooking career began back in 2003 flipping burgers at a friend’s bar and grill in Omaha, NE.  After a few years working in different restaurants in Omaha, I enrolled in the culinary program at Johnson & Wales University in Denver, CO in 2006.  After two years of early morning culinary lab classes paired with late nights working the line at a popular Denver restaurant, I received my Associates degree in Culinary Arts in May of 2008.  I returned to Omaha in September of 2008, and began an internship with ConAgra Foods’ Culinary Innovation group in December of 2008.

Over the past 5 plus years with ConAgra, I have worked on a multitude of different projects and brands with my main focus being on frozen food development.  Through the years I have worked extensively on Banquet, Healthy Choice, Marie Callender’s; and most recently on our newest frozen brands Bertolli and P.F. Chang’s.
