05/04 ART AIELLO, HURRICANE & STORM PREPAREDNESS, MARKUS ROTHKRANZ AND CARA BROTMAN, LOVE ON A PLATE: THE GOURMET UNCOOKBOOK, PLANT-BASED VERSIONS OF THE MOST FAVORITE MEALS IN THE WORLD

PREPAREDNESS EXPERT ART AIELLO - HURRICANE & STORM PREPAREDNESS

A TIMELY CHECKLIST TO CONSIDER BEFORE  AN EMERGENCY THREATENS YOUR HOME & FAMILY

Find Out What Your Family Can Do to be Prepared for Severe Weather Events that are Becoming More Frequent

Maybe you’ve noticed that number of hurricanes and extreme weather events is growing in frequency and severity. We can debate the cause of this, but the one certainty is that it only takes one storm to change your life and community. In 2016, there were 15 named storms, including seven hurricanes, three of them major. For the 2017 season, the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project is forecasting 11 named storms and 4 hurricanes to develop this year in the Atlantic. This early prediction is just 95% of average hurricane activity, but 2016 predictions turned out to be 135% of average. Consider what Hurricane Matthew brought with an intensity that left more than 1 million people in the dark.

Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 7-13) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane. It’s important that everyone learn basic steps to be prepared in case of any emergency, so on May 4th, we have Art Aiello, storm preparedness expert and one of the top generator experts in the nation, available to discuss how new technologies are making it possible to keep life-saving power flowing during even the worst weather. As weather forecasting has improved, Aiello warns that waiting until the last-minute can have consequences. For instance, two days before Hurricane Matthew generators at stores were sold out by noon and grocery store checkout lines were painfully long.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PREPARING FOR EXTREME WEATHER:
Anticipate a disruption in utilities and learn about new and generator technology
Family comes first, so prepare emergency hurricane kit for the family
Think about fuel and portable generator safety
How Generac supports the power of preparation

MARKUS ROTHKRANZ AND CARA BROTMAN - CO-AUTHORS, LOVE ON A PLATE: THE GOURMET UNCOOKBOOK, PLANT-BASED VERSIONS OF THE MOST FAVORITE MEALS IN THE WORLD

LOVE ON A PLATE:
The Gourmet UnCookbook
Plant-Based Versions of the Most Favorite Meals in the World

Your ideas about eating healthy food are about to change forever. What if you could keep eating burgers, mac and cheese, and heal your body instead of killing it? In LOVE ON A PLATE: The Gourmet UnCookbook, Cara Brotman and Markus Rothkranz feature recipes for many of your favorite foods without using ingredients such as meat, dairy, wheat, sugar or anything unnatural that lead to illness and obesity. These dishes look and taste like the real thing. Better, they are all simple and easy to prepare. As almost sinfully delicious as these recipes are, once you’ve tried them you are almost certain to feel better than you've ever felt in your life.

By feeding your body whole foods such as plants, seeds, and nuts and health oils, you help your body to grow and repair itself. Preparing raw-food meals is as simple as eating vegan is nutritious. Some of the recipes have less than five ingredients and take no time to make.

The basics of raw food are very easy. Never heat anything above 118°F because you kill the life-force in your food, especially the enzymes. In nature, plants dehydrate on hot days. You can still have mac and cheese, but it’s made differently using wheat-free, gluten-free ingredients and every spoonful will still be scrumptious.

LOVE ON A PLATE includes recipes for all your favorite snacks, lunches, dinners and desserts, including potato chips, unTuna Salad, unChicken Tacos, lasagna and wraps. For those looking for delicious soups and salads, unChicken Noodle Soup, Corn Chowder, Kale Salad, Green Crunch Salad, Asian Salad and Tabouli Salad are bursting with flavor and simple-to-prepare dishes.

LOVE ON A PLATE also features delicious, sugar-free, flourless and dairy-free desserts such as Crème Brulée, Chocolate Tacos, Cannoli, Chocolate Mousse, and even ice cream. None of the recipes use bread or pasta. What’s more, none of the recipes are cooked!

05/01 DOMINIKA JAROSZ, FEEDING THE 5000, GARY CANTER, CANTER’S DELI

DOMINIKA JAROSZ - GLOBAL CAMPAIGNS MANAGER, FEEDING THE 5000, A FOOD FESTIVAL MADE FROM TOP QUALITY INGREDIENTS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE GO TO WASTE

FEEDING THE 5000 LOS ANGELES
11-4pm, May 4 2017
Downtown LA, Pershing Square

What is Feeding the 5000?
There’s no shortage of fabulous food in Los Angeles. Yet every year millions of tons of it is wasted, at huge cost to our planet. Across the US, food waste accounts for one quarter of all water used. In California, that’s around 8000 million gallons a day, over half of all the water used by residents and businesses in Los Angeles county in a month.

Feeding the 5000 is a festival that celebrates the value of food, and calls on everyone to tackle food waste. It is a chance for everyone to come together, enjoy a delicious meal made from fresh, quality ingredients that would otherwise be wasted, and pledge to take food waste #offthemenu in LA.

On May 4 in Pershing Square, Feedback and partners will provide a free meal for thousands, made entirely from top quality ingredients that would otherwise have gone to waste. Feeding the 5000 events have taken place in over 40 locations around the world since the first in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2009, helping to catalyse the movement to end food waste in all its forms, whether that’s the kitchens of top restaurants, the supply chains of major grocery retailers, or the homes of each and every one of us.

In 2016, Feeding the 5000 events took place in six US cities, including Denver, NYC and DC, with the involvement of top chefs, local dignitaries and hundreds of local partners and volunteers. Feeding the 5000 LA is taking place as part of the LA Times Food Bowl festival: http://lafoodbowl.com/

What’s happening on May 4?
On May 4, thousands will gather in Pershing Square in Downtown LA from 11-4pm to feast on a delicious meal made from fresh, top quality ingredients that would otherwise go to waste. Chefs and speakers will take to the stage to talk about food waste issues, recipes and tips to try at home and fun activities for all the family will be available.

Hundreds of volunteers will be involved in sourcing, preparing and producing the food, including through gathering the ingredients and at a ‘Disco Chop’ event two days before, a party where volunteers prepare produce to the sound of music.

Who is involved in Feeding the 5000 LA?
Feedback has been hosting Feeding the 5000 events since the inaugural event in London in 2009. Their work in the US is supported by The Rockefeller Foundation.

The meal will be prepared by LA Kitchen using recovered produce sourced by Food Forward, and the event is produced and promoted with the help and collaboration of organizations fighting food waste and hunger across the city including LA Food Policy Council, Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Food Finders, Kiss the Ground, Waste Not Want Not Now, Hunger Action Los Angeles, So Cal 350, Fallen Fruit, Tree People, St. Francis Center, L.A. Compost, Downtown Women’s Center, Don’t Waste L.A., Swipe Out Hunger, Alma Backyard Farms and Council member Jose Huizar.

GARY CANTER – CANTER’S DELI

Since 1931, Canter's has been serving up LA's finest deli cuisine. Voted the best pastrami by the LA Times and LA Weekly, Canter's prides itself on delivering the amazing experience that has kept its clientele returning over-and-over again for decades. This culinary landmark is lovingly managed by the third- and fourth-generations of the Canter family, who take a hands-on approach to ensure the highest quality in every aspect of the restaurant. Whether it's the freshly-baked breads, or the famous house-made pickles, Canter's always goes the extra mile to provide the authentic, traditional Jewish deli experience, which helped grow the restaurant from a small storefront to the massive operation that it is today. As inviting as its food, Canter's is also known for its welcoming ambiance, a perfect blend of contemporary comfort with the nostalgic charm of its stylish 1950's decor. Canter's continues to stand out as a unique dining experience that transports patrons back to the golden age of delis.

Canter's Deli is one of California's oldest delis. Located in Los Angeles' Miracle Mile District -the heart and soul of the entertainment industry - Canter's Delicatessen is a third-generation family-run business whose owners have an intense pride in their deli and a hands-on work ethic.

It all began in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1924. After losing a deli in the 1929 stock market crash, Ben Canter and his two brothers moved to California with just $500 in their pockets.Eager to succeed, they opened up a Canter Brother's Delicatessen in 1931 in Boyle Heights, the Jewish center of Los Angeles.

When the character of the neighborhood changed, Ben Canter's daughter, Selmo Udko, and her then husband, Harold Price, partnered with Ben Canter and his wife, Jennie, to purchase a prime location at 439 North Fairfax Avenue. And instead of calling it Canter's Brothers they called it Canter's Fairfax.

In 1953 this new team purchased the old Esquire Theatre at 419 North Fairfax and moved Canter's Deli just up the street to the larger location.

For over seventy-five years now this third-generation family-owned business has served food to locals, tourist, and celebrities alike. With its Art Deco décor and its trademark autumn leaves ceiling, this hangout has hardly changed in its over half century at its current location.

Canter's has also become a favorite whistle stop for hot political contests. Mayor Bradley, Governor Deukmejian, Rudy Giuliani, and Bill Simon have gone from booth to booth introducing themselves to our customers. And with CBS studios just up the block, celebrities frequent Canter's every day. Our catering department caters to many television shows and movies, as well as catering their wrap parties.

Over the years, many celebrities have passed through our doors. In the 50s Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller ate here, as did Jack Benny and Elizabeth Taylor. Other celebrity noshers include Sydney Poitier, Mel Brooks, Wilt Chamberlain, Charlene Tilton, Brooke Shields, Jacqueline Bisset, Catherine Oxenberg, John  Travolta, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Buddy Hackett, Olivia Newton John, Muhammad Ali, Monty Hall, Bill Cosby, David Brenner, Rodney Dangerfield, Dick Van Dyke, Shelly Winters, Elizabeth Montgomery, The Cars, Henry Winkler, and Greg Morris. The producer of Miami Vice, Michael Mann, wrote here for hours at a time when he was writing for Vegas. The Neil Simon movie, "I Ought to be in Pictures", with Walter Matthau was filmed here. Many celebrities who prefer to go "incognito" sneak in around 3:00 am for a late night nosh!

Canter's is also part of the larger Los Angeles community having received numerous awards from such institutions as the City of Hope, appreciation letters for outstanding and dedicated service, and letters from Jerry Lewis and the Muscular Dystrophy Association thanking Canters for donating food.

Canter's Delicatessen continues to be a Los Angeles landmark and late night hot spot, and, with the 2003 addition of Canter's Deli at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, we are committed to bringing the best delicatessen food to our noshers on the famed Las Vegas Strip and to Dodger fans at Dodger Stadium.

JEAN SESSIONS - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SONOMA COUNTY VINTNERS AND MARK MALPIEDE FROM WILLIAMS SELYEM - RECAP OF 2017 SONOMA COUNTY BARREL AUCTION

SONOMA COUNTY BARREL AUCTION CONTINUES TO BREAK RECORDS AS THIRD ANNUAL EVENT RAISES $794,500

Sonoma County Vintners celebrated a successful third annual Sonoma County Barrel Auction on April 21, after 90 one-of-a-kind Sonoma County wine lots raised a record-setting $794,500. With over 250 members of the wine trade and media in attendance for the live auction at Santa Rosa’s Vintners Inn, and additional bids placed via proxy, this year’s totals were up more than $100,000 from 2016.

The auction’s “never before, never again” wine lots were crafted by top vintners from Sonoma County’s 17 distinct AVA appellations, and offered in quantities of five, 10 or 20 cases. All of the wines featured were made exclusively for the auction, and will be available in the market only by resale to the winning bidder’s customers.

For the second consecutive year Kosta Browne had the top earning lot with “The Shire of Freestone,” a 20-case Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir lot that set a new record at $60,000.

The second highest selling offering was the 20-case Silver Oak Cellars 2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon lot, which closed the auction on a high-note at $50,000. The third top lot was Williams Selyem Winery’s 20-case Pinot Noir, blended from three of its estate vineyards, which sold for $26,000. Ramey Wine Cellars’ 10-case “Ramey’s Heart of the Russian River Valley” Chardonnay was the top white wine at $12,500.

All money raised supports the marketing initiatives of Sonoma County Vintners and its AVA partners.

Next year’s Sonoma County Barrel Auction will be held April 20, 2018. Future Barrel Auctions will be held on the third Friday of April. Attendees are licensed wine sellers, including retailers, restaurateurs and wholesalers. For more information or to request a ticket, visit sonomawine.com/barrelauction.

BASEBALL & HOT DOGS: THAT’S A LOT OF HISTORY

A Fun look at the Traditions that make Nathan’s Famous the Perfect Choice for the Official Hot Dog of America’s Pastime!

In 1893, sausages became standard fare at baseball parks.   This tradition is believed to have been started by a St. Louis bar Owner, Chris Von de Ahe, a German Immigrant who also owned the St. Louis Browns major league baseball team.  Fast forward a few years, and it was 101 years ago that Nathan’s Famous sold their first hot dogs on the boardwalk in Coney Island.  That’s a lot of history.

On April 28th, just as the baseball season is warming up, we have one of the champions of another great sport to talk baseball, hot dogs and the traditions that make them both special.

There are few champions in any sport who can claim nine championships, with eight of them in consecutive years.   Last July 4th, this hot dog eating superstar smashed his previous record by eating 70 hot dogs and buns in an amazing display of gastronomical greatness!   We’re proud to have Joey “JAWS” Chestnut live from St. Louis to discuss the challenges of setting of new Guinness World Record, and he’ll talk a little hot dog and baseball history.  You’ll learn how Nathan’s Famous is now the official hot dog of America’s Pastime, and what this ‘FAMOUS’ brand is doing to celebrate.

GAIL MCGOVERN - PRESIDENT & CEO, AMERICAN RED CROSS - HOW TO HELP SUPPORT FAMILIES IMPACTED BY DISASTERS

Every year, the Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters.  That means that every eight minutes, the Red Cross responds to a disaster with the vast majority from house fires.

In the first quarter of 2017, Red Cross workers in communities nationwide have responded to an unusually high number of multi-family fires–more than three times the number in 2016.

Over the past year, Red Cross volunteers responded to 180 significant disasters in 45 states including Hurricane Matthew, the Louisiana floods, wildfires, severe storms and other emergencies.

More than 32,000 Red Crossers opened nearly 800 emergency shelters providing 206,000 overnight stays, served more than 4.1 million meals and snacks, and distributed more than 2.1 million relief items. In addition, thousands of people across the country were impacted by a fire in their home.

The Red Cross depends on donations to help people affected by disasters, and April 26 is their Annual Giving Day when they ask the public to help.  American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern is available to discuss ways your viewers can help the Red Cross provide hope and urgent relief such as food, blankets and other essentials to people impacted by disasters across the country.

Behind each of these disasters are individuals and families that rely on their neighbors for help during their time of greatest need. A gift of $88.50 to the American Red Cross can support a family of three with a day’s worth of food, blankets, comfort and other recovery items.

Funds raised on April 26 will go toward supporting families recovering from disasters such as home fires, tornados and floods.

04/21 CHEF SARAH PENROD, THE URBAN COWGIRL, DAVID PARRISH, PARRISH FAMILY VINEYARDY

CHEF SARAH PENROD - AUTHOR, THE URBAN COWGIRL: DECADENTLY SOUTHERN, OUTRAGEOUSLY TEXAS, FOOD, TRADITIONS AND STYLE FOR MODERN LIFE

Sarah is best known as the resident “Texpert” on Food Network Star season 10, where she won fans nationwide with her bold flavors and equally bold personality. (Co-host Bobby Flay called her a “walking sound-bite.”)

As Sarah explains it, most of us have a little “Urban Cowgirl” in us – we love comfort food and country flavors, but sometimes we like to add a little big-city style. We read Saveur or Bon Apetit, but our favorite recipes were hand-written on index cards by our grandmothers. We cherish our culture and traditions, but we know that we can – and do – add our own modern twists.

Urban Cowgirl: Decadently Southern, Outrageously Texan, Food, Family Traditions, and Style for Modern Life

Celebrating the modern Southern culture, country chic lifestyle, and spitfire attitude of the city cowgirl… the cowgirl in heels.

Part cookbook, part how-to and inspirational guide for the modern city girl with Southern roots and a cowgirl attitude, Urban Cowgirl features Sarah Penrod’s unique outlook and point of view—as shared with viewers on the Next Food Network Star. Her approach is to take classic Southern and Texas foods and ingredients and traditions like the tailgate and give them a new twist with her personal brand of sparkle and shine. Urban cowgirls appreciate Southern big city lifestyle, but don’t let the high heels and designer dresses fool you. These girls will celebrate their heritage, acknowledge their cultural roots, and build from traditional values, with a smile on their face and a glass of sweet tea in their hand. They may have a designer coffee table littered with gourmet cooking magazines , but the recipes they hold most dear are third generation, handwritten, kitchen love letters from a grandmother they may have never even met.

DAVID PARRISH - OWNER & WINEMAKER, PARRISH FAMILY VINEYARD

Winemaker, David Parrish, graduated from UC Davis with a degree majoring in Biology with a Chemistry/Math minor taking several courses in Winemaking. Years later, Dr. Mark Kliewer, the head of the UC Davis Viticulture Department, contacted David to inquire about a research project for different trellis styles in the wine grape industry. David agreed to do a 5-acre trial, which was a success. Commercial growers from Napa Valley, who wanted to use his expertise, then contacted David and he agreed to meet with them. He found himself in the company of Robert Mondavi, a giant of the wine industry, among others. At the time, they were hoping to turn Napa into the world quality wine region that it is known for today, by improving the quality of their grapes using David’s trellis system. David has been growing his own vineyard since 1995, and producing his own wine since 2004. He is someone that truly knows every step of the winemaking process.

HISTORY:
Atascadero was intended to be built as a utopian community with agricultural sustainability. That’s what EG Lewis had in mind, when he purchased 27,000 acres in the Atascadero/Paso Robles area.  Lewis called upon a man named Earl Henderson, who was farming in the San Joaquin Valley at the time, to be the viticulturist managing the acreage set aside for wine grape production. With great success, Earl planted and managed approximately 740 acres of wine grapes that consisted of Alicante, Charbon, Petit Syrah, and Zinfandel (the Zinfandel cuttings were purchased from the Paderewski Ranch).  Unfortunately, no one could foresee two major problems that would lead to the collapse of this new fledgling industry: U.S. Prohibition and the Great Depression.  Although Earl was able to sell his grapes privately to individuals who could make their own wine, he was unable to have a commercial winery.  He and his wife, Katie, settled in Atascadero calling it home, raising their kids, and watching the next generations grow.

Fast forward 70 years, and David Parrish, Henderson’s grandson, was living a similar dream with his own vineyard in the foothills outside Atascadero. Like his grandfather, he didn’t fall into the winemaking world; he was called to it.  However, it wasn’t until one evening, sharing a bottle of wine with his brother, overlooking the vineyard, that David considered the possibility of taking it a step further than their grandfather ever could: opening their own winery.  The Parrish Family took the leap!  The family began producing their boutique wine in 2004 and later opened a tasting room to the public in 2011.  In memory of their grandfather, the family has named one of their labels, P.O. Box 1, since Earl and Katie Henderson had the first P.O. Box in Atascadero.

CREEK RESTORATION:
Parrish Family Vineyard is very excited to work with the San Luis Obispo Resource Conservation District (RCD) in the restoration of the Adelaida Creek on our Adelaida Vineyard Property! The creek bed has been donated to the County of San Luis Obispo for the work. The restoration will lead to the planting of about 600 native plants, which will help with the rehabilitation of the water aquifer and slow erosion. The work will begin in early November 2016.

Thanks to the RCD, California Conservation Corp, and AmeriCorps’ Environmental Stewards for their work!
