5/14 LISA CAREY, THE CALIFORNIA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL, EXECUTIVE CHEF CHANG SIVILAY, THE STANDARD HOTEL, CALIFORNIA WINEMASTERS

LISA CAREY - THE CALIFORNIA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL (MAY 17-18)

The delicious heart shaped fruit is the main ingredient of celebration with the 2014 California Strawberry Festival getting underway the weekend of May 17 and 18, 2014 at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard (3250 S. Rose Avenue).  Ranking among the top Festivals in the entire nation, the fruitful fete boasts lip-smacking strawberries every way imaginable, featuring all day fun for the entire family with concert performances, more than 200 Fine Arts & Crafts booths, the Strawberry Promenade with celebrity cooking demonstrations, Strawberryland For Kids featuring rides and attractions, gooey contests, special appearances, and more, on 15 scenic acres of parkland.
An estimated 1.5 million strawberries will be consumed over the weekend. With 50 food booths where berries abound, the fruit that wears its seeds on the outside is served in a bevy of berry delicious forms. If you haven’t had strawberry pizza alongside a strawberry beer, you haven’t been to the Festival. Or perhaps the strawberry nachos are more you style. Oh, did we mention strawberry funnel cake, strawberry crepes, chocolate dipped strawberries, fried strawberries, the “build your own” strawberry shortcake tent, or even strawberry popcorn?

Indulge guilt free, because with each bite the non-profit food booths reap 100% of sales for their causes. The formula has proven to be a fruitful enterprise. Over the past three decades more than $4 million dollars has benefitted more than 40 southland charities. Serving up wholesome family fun, where else can you throw berries at your best friend in the Tart Toss Contest, or eat a strawberry pie by literally putting your face in it at the Pie Eating Contest, or pile on the fixings in the Strawberry Shortcake Build-Off Contest?

General admission is $12, seniors 62+ are $8 and children ages 5-12 are $5. Kids 4 and under are free. Active military and dependents with ID are $8. Hours are 10:00a.m. to 6:30p.m.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.strawberry-fest.org. The California Strawberry Festival information line is 1 888 288-9242.

The U.S. Census reports that nearly four million babies will be born this year. By eating strawberries, expectant mothers consume folic acid, an important B vitamin that helps prevent neutral tube birth defects such as spina bifida. Eight strawberries have more vitamin C than a cup of orange juice.

5/7 LARRY LIPSON, LISA HAMILTON, HARPER'S MAGAZINE

LARRY LIPSON - WINE REPORT FROM FLORIDA

For fifty years Larry Lipson was the food critic for the Los Angeles Daily News and now reports from Costa Rica weekly with his thoughts and favorite picks for Food & Wine.  His lovely Wife Lillian is also on hand at the Lipson Institute for advanced wine studies.

LISA HAMILTON – WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER, THE MAY ISSUE OF HARPER'S MAGAZINE CHRONICLES THE WORLDWIDE FOOD FIGHT OVER QUINOA

In the May issue of Harper’s Magazine, Lisa Hamilton chronicles the worldwide food fight over quinoa. Yes, it's the grain-like seed that launched a thousand hipster jokes—but it's also a miracle crop that can flourish in the face of cold, drought, and salt-saturated terrain. Given this amazing resilience, it could add substantially to global agricultural production, if only the Bolivians, who have the world's biggest seed bank, would share it. But for both cultural and economic reasons, the Bolivians have turned into genetic protectionists. Hamilton journeys from the Andes to a multimillion-dollar greenhouse facility in Provo, Utah, where two Mormon agronomists are desperately trying to produce hybrid quinoa—the sort of thing that will feed the starving masses and put quinoa granola bars "in every Walmart in America."

Writer and photographer Lisa M. Hamilton focuses on agriculture and rural communities. Her work has taken her from castration time on a Wyoming sheep ranch to a meeting of radical plant breeders in Iowa; from dairy farms in the highlands of Bavaria to sacred rice paddies along the coast of Japan. She is the author of Deeply Rooted: Unconventional Farmers in the Age of Agribusiness, and her work has also been published in Harper's, The Atlantic, McSweeney's, Orion, and Gastronomica.
As a fellow with the Alicia Patterson Foundation in 2010, she explored the uncertain future that American agriculture faces as a result of climate change, depleted water resources and the end of cheap energy. More recently she has focused on her home state of California, exploring its rural communities and landscapes for the multimedia work Real Rural .

5/6 SAM LANDO, LANDO WINES, DENNY SOMACH, GET THE LED OUT, LED ZEPPLIN

SAM LANDO - FOUNDER & OWNER, LANDO WINES – HANDCRAFTING PINOT NOIR FROM THE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY & SONOMA COAST

Sam Lando started his career working for some of the large global wine producers, and soon identified his true love of working with and enjoying Pinot Noir.

While his emphasis was sales and marketing, he realized early on the need to understand as much as possible about differing winemaking and viticulture techniques. After working with and becoming friends with some of the best new world wine producers, it was a natural evolution to begin hobby winemaking.
After working for five years with Kosta Browne Winery, he departed at the end of 2012. His work with dear friends was a deeply rewarding experience…personally and professionally. They worked (and played) so well together because of a love and passion for what they did. In addition to their shared affliction for Pinot, they enjoyed the company of great people and food.

In the middle of the 2012 vintage, Sam and his wife Jennifer decided to make the leap and take the winemaking hobby to the next level. They borrowed against their savings and began building the foundation to develop a small Pinot Noir focused winery. The goal is to make intense, yet elegant and balanced wines from the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations. We push ourselves to make great wines that we enjoy drinking and take great pride in sharing with our dear friends.

TONY ORLANDO – MUSICIAN & ACTOR, THE AMERICAN NATIONWIDE OBSERVANCE OF MOTHER’S DAY TURNS 100 THIS YEAR

Tony is a spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The Eagles were instrumental in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national observance. In more recent times the Eagles have been very proactive in supporting research to find a cure for diabetes. They have donated $25 million to the University of Iowa to help fund research there.

The American nationwide observance of Mother’s Day turns 100 this year.  In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Congressional bill designating the second Sunday every May in honor of mothers.  Many trace Mother's Day origin to a movement begun ten years earlier in 1904 with the advocacy and activism of the non-profit organization Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE), which would prove to be the first of its many history-making accomplishments.  In the decades to follow, FOE has played a similarly prominent role on a broad array of social and philanthropic causes, including helping launch Social Security and Medicare and ensuring legal protection against job discrimination based on age, among others. This Mother's Day the Eagles donated $25 million, raised over five years, for the establishment of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa.

Tony Orlando, is an American show business professional, best known as the lead singer of the group Tony Orlando and Dawn in the early 1970s. Discovered by producer Don Kirshner, Orlando had songs on the charts in 1961 when he was 16, "Halfway to Paradise" and "Bless You". Orlando then became a producer himself, and at an early age was promoted to a vice-president position at CBS Records, where he was in charge of the April-Blackwood Music division. He sang under the name "Dawn" in the 1970s, and when the songs became hits, he went on tour and the group became "Tony Orlando and Dawn". They had several songs which were major hits including "Candida", "Knock Three Times", and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". The group hosted a variety program, "The Tony Orlando and Dawn Show" on CBS from 1974 to 1976, and then broke up in 1978. Orlando then continued as a solo singer, performing in Las Vegas and Branson, Missouri.[1] Orlando has hosted the New York City portions of the MDA Labor Day Telethon on WWOR-TV since the 1980s but quit in 2011 in response to Jerry Lewis' firing from the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

KIM HAASARUD - 101 SHOTS

Both classic and sophisticated shot recipes like you've never seen before. Forget what you think you know about shots from your college years. In 101 Shots, cocktail aficionado Kim Haasarud elevates the lowly shot to heights never seen before in this collection of recipes just as she’s done with her other books including 101 Martinis and 101 Margaritas. For example, the Peach Fuzz Shooter, the Mini Bananas Foster, and the Archangel are made with fresh fruit purees. There are more traditional recipes as well, such as the Belfast Bomber made with Baileys and Irish whiskey dropped into a glass of Guinness, not to mention spicy offerings like the Yellow Sun Sangrita made with smoked paprika and Tabasco, and even savory ones like the Caprese Shooter made with tomatoes, basil, salt, pepper—and vodka, of course. What’s perhaps best about shot recipes is that there is almost no occasion when they’re not fun to serve and enjoy, from the Johnny Appleseed, a perfect drink for fall made with fresh cider, to the Red, White, and Blue, a layered concoction ideal for Independence Day parties. With gelée shot recipes, too, this may be the last party cocktail book you’ll ever need.

ABOUT KIM: Kim Haasarud is a James Beard-honored mixologist, author, and beverage consultant. She conceives her signature cocktails much as Alice Waters would create a specialty dish, taking inspiration from market-fresh, high quality ingredients. "Cocktails, like food, should be culinary experiences," says Haasarud. "It is about combining ingredients to create a sensation on the palate and entice all the senses with a combination of flavors, textures, aromas, and garnishes."

You won't find the standard Cosmopolitan or mix-based Margarita on Haasarud's ever-changing bar card. Instead, depending on the occasion or the season, she might shake up Martini infusing teas with fresh muddled fruits, or concoct a Margarita with ripe kumquats or a combination of kiwis and fresh herbs.
