LIA HUBER - ENTREPRENEUR, RECIPE DEVELOPER AND AUTHOR OF NOURISHED: A MEMOIR OF FOOD, FAITH & ENDURING LOVE  - HOLIDAYS WITHOUT GUILT!

NOURISHED: A MEMOIR OF FOOD, FAITH & ENDURING LOVE  (WITH RECIPES)

A noted entrepreneur, food writer, and recipe developer serves up an evocative adventure story about her quest to find healing, meaning, and a place at the table.

Hunger comes to us in many forms, writes Lia Huber—we long to be satisfied not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Nourished invites readers on Huber’s world-roaming search to find the necessary ingredients to nurture all three.

She begins her quest with an Anthony Bourdain moment in a Guatemalan village: she's slipping fresh vegetables into a communal pot of soup she's cooking up for chronically undernourished children. Village grannies look on disapprovingly... until the kids come back for more.

From there, Huber takes readers to the Greek island of Corfu, where she learns the joys of simple food and the power of unconditional love; to a Costa Rican jungle house (by way of an 8,000-mile road trip), where she finds hope and healing; and finally to California's wine country, where she steps into the person she was meant to be and discovers her calling to nourish others.

11/21 TANYA BROWN, USDA FOOD SAFETY EXPERT, COOKING MYTHS AND VITAL TIPS TO PREVENT FOODBORNE ILLNESS, GAMING EXPERT ERIC LACHTER, HOTTEST GAMES, TRENDS AND BLACK FRIDAY DEALS

TANYA BROWN, USDA FOOD SAFETY EXPERT - COOKING MYTHS AND TIPS TO PREVENT FOODBORNE ILLNESS THIS THANKSGIVING

LET’S TALK TURKEY: USDA DISPELS COOKING MYTHS AND OFFERS VITAL TIPS TO PREVENT FOODBORNE ILLNESS THIS THANKSGIVING

FDA Food Safety Survey Reiterates How “Time Saving” Practices can Sometimes Result in Bad News for Americans

Foodborne illness, more commonly known as food poisoning, results in roughly 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thanksgiving is a time to be especially careful, as Americans are preparing a dish (turkey) they do not cook on a regular basis and for larger numbers of people. With more than 46 million turkeys cooked this holiday, there’s no better time to encourage families to safely prepare their meal by following four simple steps: clean, separate, cook and chill.

The great news is that most Americans wash their hands when handling poultry or raw vegetables according to the recent Food & Drug Administration Food Safety Survey. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 68% of consumers wash poultry in the kitchen sink which is not recommended by the USDA and only increases their likelihood of cross-contamination.

This Thanksgiving, USDA experts are helping to dispel many common myths surrounding the preparation and serving of the holiday turkey meal. Serious illness can result from several commonly-held “time-saving” practices such as: stuffing the turkey the night before; thawing the bird on the counter; and serving a turkey once it is golden brown and the juices run clear. These actions put family members at risk for food poisoning.

To learn more about food safety practices this Thanksgiving, please visit www.FoodSafety.gov or call the USDA’s Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854), open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET and from 8 a.m., to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Families can also access “Ask Karen,” an online database of frequently asked food safety questions available 24/7.

LEARN ABOUT CREATING THE PERFECT END TO YOUR HOLIDAY MEAL WITH DECADENT DESSERTS

Drive across the country and you’ll find a variety of desserts being served as family and friends get together for the holidays. While pumpkin, apple and pecan pie may be the most popular this time of year, many people are looking for ways to serve-up those favorites with a twist.

Semi-homemade recipes are a great way to experiment with American’s most popular dessert trends, as they can provide a head start on creating a new dish. Anyone can buy a pre-made dessert at the store and use that as the foundation for making something delicious. Especially if they begin with one of the biggest holiday traditions – pie. Turning pumpkin pie into drool-worthy pumpkin milkshakes is just one example.

OTHER DESSERT TRENDS INCLUDE:
Miniature/bite-sized (mini cupcakes, cake pops and pies)
Interactive or build your own (could mean you assemble it, crack it open or dip in sauces)
Mash-up desserts (cotton candy on an ice cream cone, a cookie cake)

RONDA GIANGRECO AND CARRIE SAMMARCO RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT A NEW COMMUNITY-DRIVEN RESOURCE

HOW A ONE-YEAR COOKING CHALLENGE HELPED AN AVOWED FOODIE IN HER FIGHT AGAINST MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)
An Experience That Can Help Others

Life with MS is Unpredictable, but Author and Cook Ronda Giangreco Tackled her Diagnosis Head-on, One Weekly Feast at a Time; Now She’s Raising Awareness about a New Community-Driven Resource to Help People with MS Better Manage the Unpredictability of the Disease

Author, cook and motivational speaker Ronda Giangreco was healthy, vibrant and just back from her latest adventure at a cooking school in Italy when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). A sudden onset of MS would be difficult for anyone to accept, but for Ronda and her husband – whose mother died of complications from her MS – it was a particularly cruel twist of fate.

Told she might not be able to walk for much longer, Ronda asked herself, “…then where should I walk now?” Her answer – to the kitchen! She had always enjoyed cooking, so she decided to gather her family and friends around the dinner table every Sunday night for an entire year, as an attempt to triumph over MS one week at a time. While there were many nights when Ronda’s unpredictable MS symptoms made her goal especially challenging, she persevered, asked for help when she needed it, and ultimately went on to write “The Gathering Table: Defying Multiple Sclerosis with a Year of Pasta, Wine and Friends.”

Like many people living with chronic disease, Ronda says it’s sometimes difficult to ask for help – especially when it comes to support with everyday tasks and chores. And she’s not alone. A recent national survey found that 80% of people with MS and support partners surveyed wanted help with everyday chores. About a third wanted help getting connected to services and resources that could help with these tasks.

Now, in an effort to help others combat this disease for which there is no cure, Ronda is helping spread the word about a new community-driven resource called GatherMS.com that she wishes had been available in the early days of her disease. GatherMS connects people with MS and their loved ones with existing resources and support services that can help manage the everyday unpredictability of MS – connecting people with help for day-to-day tasks, health and wellness and emotional support.

11/16 ROMAIN TEYTEAU FROM GEORGES DUBOEUF, BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU DAY, STEPHEN M. ROWLEY FROM COX BUSINESS

ROMAIN TEYTEAU - EXPORT DIRECTOR, GEORGES DUBOEUF - HAPPY BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU DAY!

Beaujolais Nouveau symbolizes the end of the growing season and an invitation to partake of autumn’s bounty. No other wine is released annually with such anticipation, made and released as a finished product only four-to-six weeks after being handpicked off the vine - literally putting a cork on the end of harvest.

5 Beaujolais Nouveau Facts
Beaujolais Nouveau is the world's freshest wine - it takes about 60 days for its grapes to go from vine to glass, seeing no oak and only a short time in bottle.
All Beaujolais Nouveau grapes must be picked by hand (Beaujolais & Champagne are France's only regions where hand harvesting is mandatory).

Beaujolais Nouveau owes its fresh, juicy style to the winemaking process called 'carbonic maceration' which facilitates gentle, whole berry fermentation.
Serve Beaujolais Nouveau slightly cool, at about 55 degrees (F). Even though it’s red, this fresh wine is most refreshing, fruit-forward & food-friendly when chilled.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day was historically on November 15th until 1985. Now, under French law, Beaujolais Nouveau is always released at 12:01am on the third Thursday of November. The reason? It’s France's excuse to celebrate its 100+ Nouveau Day festivals over a four-day weekend, every year!

ANNABELLE GURWITCH - ACTRESS  & ENVIRONMENTALIST  TALKS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING

America Recycles Day is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Most people agree that recycling is important, in fact, according to research commissioned by the Carton Council last year, 90% of consumers think recycling is important and people should do what they can to try to recycle. Unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily translate into action as recycling rates linger around 35 percent and many people still aren’t recycling everything they can. On November 10th, actress, writer and activist Annabelle Gurwitch will be live from a facility that produces green building materials made entirely out of recycled food and beverage cartons to educate people about the importance of recycling to our economy and environmental well-being. She wants to make sure people know that food and beverage cartons can and should be recycled, and that facilities like this one actually need more.  Annabelle hopes to motivate occasional recyclers to become “everyday” recyclers and provide an example of what their recyclables become. You should also know that Annabelle was the former host of Planet Green's original series, WA$TED!

GRANT SPOTTS - CO-OWNER, DULZURA WINERY

The Dulzura Vineyard and Winery is located on the pioneer-era Clark Ranch,
established in 1885. Today the ranch is still family owned. The buildings are among the very few surviving structures from that era. Come visit and share a glass of fine wine while enjoying the historical ambience and beauty of the Clark Ranch.

VINEYARDS
Our Estate Vineyard produces eight select grape varietals. . Our vines are located on a gently sloped hillside above the winery. The vines recieve ample sun and a gentle breeze on most days. Our proximity to the ocean provides a nightly cooling off which allows the vineyard to produce fruit of exceptional quality.

HISTORIC CLARK RANCH
The Clark Ranch was established in 1885 by Frank J. Clark and his wife Lila. Frank found in Dulzura a climate that suited his predisposition to asthma and severe allergies that had plagued him while growing up in Nebraska. He and Lila decided to settle here, building their first home on the north side of the Dulzura Creek along the Campo Stage Route, as Highway 94 was known then. A large variety of citrus trees were shipped from the east coast, along with olive and figs. The two of them embarked on planting several large orchards  with figs and olives being the primary commercial crops. In addition, persimmon, pomegranate, apple, pear, peach, plum, walnut, and almond trees were planted. Many of them have survived and still bear delicious fruit to this day. In the winter of 1894-95 a severe storm caused the creek to flood, destroying the home. As spring arrived, they began construction on a new ranch house to be built on higher ground on the south side of Dulzura Creek.  It was completed later that year, and was constructed entirely from used lumber, including 1400 board feet of redwood purchased for the sum of $25.00 from what was then the National City Race Track. The stonemason who built the cellar walls and home foundations received $1.50 per day plus board for his efforts.

Sales of ranch-produced fruit in San Diego provided the growing family a decent living for the time from their agricultural efforts.  Around 1902 Lila developed a recipe for a sweet 'dessert' that was a delicious, spicy confection made from the fruit of the family's fig trees. It caught the attention of San Diego grocer Charles Hamilton who made inquiries about having the Clarks produce the specialty food for sales exclusively in his store along with distribution rights. This was the beginning of 'Clark's Pickleized Figs'.  By 1910 the Clarks had built an adjacent two-storied building for the sole purpose of making the 'Pickleized Figs' confection in commercial quantities.  Soon the fig dessert confection was being enjoyed up and down the Pacific Coast, and large quantitites were shipped to the east coast as well. Things went well for the family over the course of the next several years until the onset of World War I, when sugar became scarce. The availability of a key ingredient in the 'Clark's Pickleized Figs' recipe was suddenly curtailed, and the business came to a grinding halt. The family returned to it's reliance on sales of citrus and fresh fruit for its income, and later ventured into cattle ranching to survive the Great Depression. Remarkably, the Clark Ranch has survived the years and remains under family ownership to this day.

In 2001 the family sold some 1,100 acres to the U.S.  Bureau of Land Management through the Trust for Public Land. The acres upon which the original ranch house and improvements were located was kept separate from the sale, and is now the site of the Dulzura Vineyard and Winery. The 'Pickle House' is no longer the kitchen used for the production of 'Pickleized Figs', but theTasting Room for the winery. The original 'stone cellar' beneath the house built in 1895 is now the winery's cellar, where each year's vintage is aged and stored. Today the 'Pioneer- Era' ambience also survives at the Clark Ranch and one still can find relics from those bygone days and sense the history here as you enjoy some truly outstanding wines.  The recipe for the 'Clark's Pickleized Figs' has unfortunately been lost.

11/09 LIFESTYLE GURU AND TRAVEL EXPERT AMY E. GOODMAN, VEGAN TV HOST AND EXPERT NAFSIKA ANTYPAS, NATIONAL VEGAN MONTH, SARAH HARRISON SMITH, AMAZON'S BEST BOOKS OF 2017

LIFESTYLE GURU AND TRAVEL EXPERT AMY E. GOODMAN - HOLIDAY TRAVEL SURVIVAL GUIDE

TRAVEL EXPERT SHARES TOP TIPS ON EVERYTHING FROM PLANNING TO GIFTS ON THE GO

Successful winter travel is all about successful navigation of winter weather and the holiday crowds. Preparedness and safety are key. Whether it’s a two-hour drive or a two-hour flight, traveling can be one of the most stressful parts of the holiday season. And while there are some things you can’t control, there are ways to make the most of your holiday travels this year.

SOME OF AMY’S TIPS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Research: Comparison shopping has never been easier than it is right now. During holiday travel season, do your homework and understand all your options before booking.
  • Protect yourself: Winter weather can be unpredictable so it’s important to protect yourself against trip cancellation or interruption to avoid losing out on a substantial amount of money
  • Shop and ship: During the holidays, consider sending unwrapped gifts in advance to your destination to lighten your load and wrapping them upon arrival.
  • On the go games: The best kid games on the go are the ones without small pieces and that don't make a lot of noise: cards, coloring, reading books and car games that require rider participation.

VEGAN TV HOST AND EXPERT NAFSIKA ANTYPAS - ALL THINGS VEGAN FOR NATIONAL VEGAN MONTH

Antypas is an "olive oil expert" who promotes the health benefits of a plant-based nutritional plan. She believes, however, that veganism isn't a diet; it's simply a way of life. This would be an excellent tie-in with National Vegan Month

She’s currently the host of Plant-Based by Nafsika begins on A&E’s FYI. The half-hour episodes engage viewers with cooking demonstrations, interviews with doctors and nutritionists, and guests from the worlds of entertainment and fashion.

Even if you’re not vegan, chances are that you know someone who is or you’ve seen vegan items on the menu at your favorite restaurants. The world is waking up to the fact that products derived from animals not only involve immense suffering but also can cause illness and are completely unnecessary given today’s modern cruelty-free options.

Millions suffer from the epidemics of gut problems and depression. Is there a link? Recent findings reveal ground-breaking scientific evidence correlating diet to mental health—from depression to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease.   In The Psychobiotic Revolution: Mood, Food, and the New Science of the Gut-Brain Connection, Cryan and Dinan teamed up with veteran journalist Scott C. Anderson, combining complex scientific facts with helpful illustrations to tell the intriguing story of how our gut controls our brain. RUSTY ROBERTSON & KAREN TAPHORN -CVS HEALTH FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT STAND UP TO CANCER RESEARCH

CVS HEALTH ENGAGES CONSUMERS IN FOURTH ANNUAL IN-STORE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT STAND UP TO CANCER GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH

CVS Health recently launched the fourth consecutive in-store fundraising campaign at locations nationwide to benefit Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) and its ongoing efforts to accelerate the pace of cancer research. More than $15 million for Stand Up To Cancer has been raised by CVS since 2014. These critical funds have helped SU2C to develop new effective treatments such as the immunotherapy CAR T therapy which was recently approved by FDA for treatment of a type of pediatric leukemia, known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This first success could lead to similar treatments for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other cancers. SU2C has supported developments of treatments that received an FDA “breakthrough therapy" designation for advanced breast cancer as well as an FDA approval for pancreatic cancer.

Customers can support cancer research by donating $1 or $3, or more, at the pinpad at their local CVS store. Funds raised October 29th through November 19th will support cancer research programs that get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.

When CVS customers capture a selfie and post on their Instagram and/or Twitter with the hashtag #ValueOfADollar and #Promotion, they’ll be entered into sweepstakes for a chance to win the Ultimate Hollywood Experience!
