THE FUTURE OF WORKPLACE WELLNESS PROGRAMS

How People Can Improve Their Health and Earn Financial Incentives Through Employer-Sponsored Wellness Programs

Worksite wellness programs are becoming increasingly common and sophisticated, with some initiatives featuring mobile apps, social networks and wearable devices. The goal of these programs is to help improve employees’ health and productivity and reduce medical costs for individuals and the company.

June is National Employee Wellbeing Month – an opportunity for employees to learn about and take advantage of wellness programs available to them at work. An estimated 70 percent of employers already offer wellness programs and 8 percent more plan to do so during the next year, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.

As part of this trend, more employers are providing employees with free wearable fitness trackers to encourage walking and help people hold themselves accountable for their physical activity. That’s important, considering people overestimate how much exercise they get each week by more than 50 minutes, and they underestimate sedentary time by more than two hours, according to a study in Science & Medicine.

Ann Marie O’Brien, R.N., national director of health strategies Society for Human Resource Management & UnitedHealthcare, can share with your listeners tips to help people make the most of wellness programs, improve their health and earn financial incentives in the process.
