12/27 KARL WITTSTROM, ANCIENT PEAKS WINERY, MARGARITA ADVENTURES, PINOT EXPRESS, STEVE EVANS, THE MOVIE GUY

KARL WITTSTROM – PART OWNER/PROPRIETOR, ANCIENT PEAKS WINERY –  MARGARITA ADVENTURES “PINOT EXPRESS”

“Pinot Express”—an epic new 1,800-foot zipline that flies over a Pinot Noir vineyard in the Paso Robles wine country, and that is connected to the Ancient Peaks experience. The “Pinot Express” is now the highest, longest and fastest zipline offered by Margarita Adventures zipline canopy tours on the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, home of Ancient Peaks Winery’s estate Margarita Vineyard. The Pinot Express joins four existing ziplines as part of Margarita Adventures’ regular zipline canopy tours. The tours go through the vineyard and touch on sustainable winegrowng, and they conclude with an optional tasting at Ancient Peaks.

The new 1,800-foot “Pinot Express” zipline at Margarita Adventures begins atop a mountainside forest at 125 feet above ground, then sends guests swooping low right over Pinot Noir vines at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch in the Paso Robles wine country on California’s Central Coast.

The Pinot Express joins four previous ziplines as part of Margarita Adventures’ acclaimed zipline canopy tours. The Pinot Express is now the highest, longest and fastest zipline on the tours. The cost of the tours ($99) remains the same.

Margarita Adventures’ five ziplines now combine for a total of more than 4,500 linear feet. Each zipline offers a unique ride. The 1,300-foot Renegade soars over a valley with breathtaking 360-degree views. The Woodlander glides along the top of native blue and white oaks. The Hilltopper begins with a running start and concludes on a hilltop vista, while the Archway sends guests through a natural archway of companion oaks.

And now the Pinot Express punctuates the experience with an unforgettable thrill ride and an unparalleled perspective on the wine country. To reach the Pinot Express, guests take a quarter-mile trail walk, the equivalent of a very light hike. Guests who are unable to walk this distance may opt to remain with the tour van.

Margarita Adventures’ 2.5-hour zipline canopy tours also include a guided tour of Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in the late 1700s. The tours touch on the ranch’s sustainable ranching and winegrowing practices, as well as its diverse wildlife and remarkable geology, which includes fields of ancient oyster fossils.

Tours conclude with an optional tasting at the affiliated Ancient Peaks Winery, which specializes in artisan wines grown on the ranch’s estate Margarita Vineyard. Tour guests receive 20% off wine purchases, and the tasting fee is waived with a purchase of one bottle or more.

About Margarita Adventures - At Margarita Adventures, we offer a uniquely thrilling perspective on a true California landmark—the historic Santa Margarita Ranch. Here, you will embark on five distinct ziplines spanning more than 4,500 combined feet, starting with a 1,200-foot valley crossing and finishing on the epic new 1,800-foot Pinot Express zipline that flies right over Pinot Noir vines. Along the way, you will learn about the ranch’s remarkable natural features, sustainable winegrowing practices and role as part of California's famed Mission Trail. Your tour concludes in the quaint hamlet of Santa Margarita, where you can opt to sample Ancient Peaks wines grown on the ranch. More at www.margarita-adventures.com.

12/26 MICHAEL SILACCI, OPUS ONE, CHRISTINE HALL, THE PIE QUEEN, ALEJANDRA SCHRADER, MASTERCHEF

MICHAEL SILACCI - OPUS ONE

Château Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son Timothy made the partnership’s first vintage at the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1979. The following year the partners officially announced their joint venture.

In 1981 a single case of the joint venture wine sold for $24,000 at the first Napa Valley Wine Auction – the highest price ever paid for a California wine. In 1982 Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild began label design. The partners agreed to choose a name of Latin origin for the joint venture, allowing for easy recognition in both English and French. Baron Philippe announced his choice, “Opus,” a musical expression denoting the first masterwork of a composer. Two days later he proposed an additional word: “Opus One”.

The 1979 and 1980 vintages were simultaneously unveiled in 1984 as Opus One’s first release. Opus One then became known as America’s first ultra-premium wine, establishing a category of wine priced by the bottle at $50 and above. Following Lucien Sionneau’s retirement in 1985, Patrick Léon joined Château Mouton Rothschild as winemaker and Timothy Mondavi as co-winemaker of Opus One.

Three years later, Baron Philippe de Rothschild died in France at the age of 85; and Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the reins of the family wine business. This same year Opus One exported a share of its 1985 vintage – and became the first ultra-premium California wine to be sold in France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland. International demand for the wine continued, and in 1999 Opus One celebrated its 20th anniversary by holding vertical tastings and gala dinners in Oakville, New York, Paris and London. In 2001 the release of its 20th vintage – the 1998 – was met with gala events in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
The winery’s board of directors appointed David Pearson CEO in 2004, the first person singly responsible for Opus One. Michael Silacci was thereafter named winemaker, the first to assume full responsibility for viticulture and winemaking.

Constellation Brands, Inc. purchased Robert Mondavi Corporation and assumed 50% ownership of Opus One in 2005. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and then Constellation Brands President and COO Robert Sands announced the Opus One Accord between Baron Philippe de Rothschild, S.A. and Constellation Brands, Inc. Opus One assumed operating independence in three key areas: vineyard management, domestic and international sales, and administration.

12/25 SUSAN CANNON, HEIDI BARRETT, LA SIRENA, JOHN HILLIARD

SUSAN CANNON, SUSAN G. CANNON ESTATE WINES & HEIDI BARRETT - WINEMAKER, LA SIRENA

Heidi Peterson Barrett is a winemaker who has been responsible for some of California's most notable cult wines, including Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle Vineyards, Paradigm Winery, Grace Family Vineyards, Amuse Bouche, Lamborn Family Vineyards, Showket Vineyards and Fantesca, is a consultant for Diamond Creek Vineyards and Niebaum-Coppola, and has her own wine label, La Sirena.

Welcome to La Sirena, where our mission is to make wines of high integrity and purity that are simply delicious. I focus on the wines that I personally love best - Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Moscato Azul (our dry Muscat Canelli). Our flagship wine is our Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a beauty indeed. I have become famous for making this variety during a 30 year career making such wines as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Grace Family, and so many more. My philosophy is to make the best wines possible by blending modern technology with traditional winemaking. These are wines of high pedigree that are ultimately handcrafted - a magical blend of art and science. Simply put - an incredibly delicious bottle of wine. All the wines are finely balanced, flavorful, pure and elegant. At the end of the day, if I don’t love it, I don’t bottle it, and the results are in the glass!

JOHN HILLIARD – CO-FOUNDER & WINEMAKER, HILLIARD BRUCE VINEYARD

Hilliard Bruce planted 21 acres of vineyard on 101 acres starting in 2004. Our wine is made 100% from estate vineyards, strictly Pinot noir and Chardonnay. We farm the vineyards to the standards of Sustainable In Practice. There are 5 clones of Pinot Noir (667, 777, 828, Calera, Pommard) and two clones of Chardonnay (76,96). Three unique land features create the orientation of our property, two hillsides and a valley floor. Our average day time temp is 70 with our evening lows dropping into the high 40's. This moderate climate paired with our intenesly sandy soils, allows for long hang times resulting in perfect ripening for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Being 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean means the cooling effects are paired with heavy winds, that take a toll during flowering, but provides just the right tool for keeping our grapes from developing mold.

One might visit all the vineyards in the world and never see another with as impeccably-farmed rows, perfectly-trellised vines and unbelievably precise watering mechanisms as the Hilliard Bruce Vineyard, located on the cool slopes of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. To describe this Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyard as carefully farmed is an understatement: both John Hilliard and Christine Bruce are former artists (in visual art and music, respectively) and master gardeners and it shows. This is a vineyard that winemakers dream about, all the while giving agricultural workers nightmares considering the amount of work and detail that goes into such a work of art. The goal is to produce wines so wonderful and so redolent of this beautiful place that every effort in the vineyard will be rewarded exponentially with each passing vintage.

Husband and wife team John Hilliard and Christine Bruce purchased the 101-acre ranch in the Sta. Rita Hills in 2002. Christine, a successful Arabian horse breeder, and John, who had just undergone a second kidney transplant, had been looking to relocate their farm from their native Texas to California for years. Christine needed a place she could raise her horses, and John, a wine lover, artist and businessman who had just come back from the brink of death, was determined to pursue his dream of cultivating a vineyard.  For both, much of their desire to relocate to California stemmed from a love of living, eating—and now, drinking—straight off the land. “It was a matter of growing what we like to eat, and with a vineyard in California, growing what we like to drink,” says John.

LESLIE MEAD RENAUD - FOLEY ESTATE, FOOD FROM THE VINE

Wine Industry Launches ‘Food from the Vine’ Fundraiser to Support Foodbank - A collaboration of local wineries, tasting rooms and vineyard management companies are joining forces this December to raise awareness and funds for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.

Participating businesses throughout Santa Barbara County will each hold a unique fundraiser (such as donating proceeds from sales of a special wine or 10 percent of sales) from now through Jan. 6.

The fundraising campaign was conceived by Leslie Mead Renaud, director of winemaking for Lincourt Vineyards and Foley Estate Winery, and Clarissa Nagy, winemaker at Nagy Wines and consulting winemaker at Riverbench Vineyard and Winery, to support the Foodbank. Emily Einolander of Ampelos Cellars also has been an integral part, donating her time and design work for the collaboration.

The goal for each participating business is to raise $1,000, with a total campaign goal of $100,000. The fundraising campaign is also meant to be fun and competitive as businesses are encouraged to call out specific individuals or groups to challenge them on a personal level.

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is transforming health by eliminating hunger and food insecurity through good nutrition and food literacy. The Foodbank provides nourishment and education through its award-winning programs and a network of more than 300 member nonprofit partners.

In Santa Barbara County, one in four people receive food support from the Foodbank; over 102,000 unduplicated people of whom 44 percent are children. Last year, the Foodbank distributed the food and resources to support 8.5 million meals — half of which was fresh produce. Click here for more information.

12/17 THE SWON BROTHERS, TWIX, TAMMY DONROE INMAN, WINTERSWEET

THE SWON BROTHERS – ZACH AND COLTON FUEL COMPETITION BETWEEN TWIX COOKIE BARS

The Swon Brothers – Zach and Colton – two of country music’s brightest rising stars who recently signed with Arista Nashville, have been performing together for years.  But this week, they accepted a challenge that put them on opposite sides of the stage – and the TWIX® Brand rivalry. Zach released a special jingle for Left TWIX, while sibling Colton shared a theme song for Right TWIX. Now, it’s up to fans everywhere to help “pick a side” between these clashing confections and their equally sweet songs.

Zach and Colton debuted the tunes Tuesday to a room full of adoring fans at B.B. King’s in Nashville, Tenn., and now the brothers are competing for bragging rights as they find out which will entice more people to choose their TWIX-themed songs. Fans can watch the Swon Brothers engage in some spirited banter about Left TWIX and Right TWIX, which culminates in a sing-off on YouTube. At the end of the video, viewers will be asked to pick a side, which may be trickier than it sounds since both songs are almost as identical as the chocolate-covered cookie bars they salute.

Since July 2012, the world has been watching as the friendly rivalry between Left and Right TWIX has unfolded through a series of TV and online ads. It's a simple story of two factories with two different philosophies, making two identical cookie bars. Right TWIX is cascaded with caramel and cloaked in chocolate, while Left TWIX is flowed with caramel and bathed in chocolate. Consumers are asked to “Try them both and Pick a Side.”

To learn more about the rivalry between Left TWIX and Right TWIX, visit the TWIX YouTube Channel or check out the Facebook page.

Helps Plant the Seed for M&M’S® ‘Year of Peanut’ in 2014 on ‘The Search for the One’
What do you get when you mix M&M’S® Brand’s passion for peanuts with one of the world’s funniest actors? Something nutty – in the best possible way. Today, Mars Chocolate North America unveiled a humorous new online content series starring beloved actor and comedian David Koechner, who rhapsodizes, analyzes and agonizes over peanuts in truly original fashion.

Directed by Tim K of Gifted Youth, Funny or Die’s commercial production company, the “Search for the One” sees Koechner transform into the “Peanutty Professor,” an eccentric explorer who’s spent his life searching for the perfect peanut.  The series features more than a dozen long- and short-form video segments and photos following Koechner’s adventures – each of which was customized to be presented on a variety of social platforms including the M&M’S Facebook, YouTube and Instagram channels.

“Just like the professor, we’re nuts about peanuts too,” said Roy Benin, Chief Consumer Officer, Mars Chocolate North America.  “In fact, only 1 in 100 peanuts is lucky enough to find its way into a bag of M&M’S Peanut.”
“The Search for the One” was scripted to blend the fun fans expect from M&M’S with Koechner’s trademark improvisational humor.  The series is designed to help plant the seed for the launch of M&M’S “Year of Peanut” in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve. The “Year of Peanut” is an innovative, year-long integrated marketing campaign to celebrate M&M’S Peanut – one of America’s favorite candies since 1954.

“Search for the One” episodes are now available at www.facebook.com/mms, www.youtube.com/mmschocolate and www.instagram.com/mmschocolate.

No food coloring. No fondant. No red velvet. Upscale bakery Robicelli’s has become a buzzed-about, in-demand purveyor of decidedly adult cupcakes. Now their extraordinary recipes are available to the home cook.

This book captures not only the Robicelli’s unique take on baking but also their edgy, unapologetically hilarious take on life, including how they survived severe economic setbacks to launch the country’s hottest cupcake brand— a venture begun with thirty dollars in borrowed quarters.

Offering both cupcake recipes and a recipe for life that calls for a stash of “emergency cake,” Robicelli’s: A Love Story, with Cupcakes is a baking book like you’ve never seen before.

12/13 Cynthia Peck, Angelo's and Vinci's, Josh Mankiewicz, Nbc, Dateline, Steve Evans

CYNTHIA PECK - ANGELO'S AND VINCI’S RISTORANTE

Angelo and Vincis just celebrated 40 years of great food! Thirty-nine years ago, our restaurant was built with tradition and has since continued with tradition. At our home in the old marketplace, we tribute our ancestors who came to America in the late 1800’s – their spirit and their recipes! Originally built as an L-shaped marketplace in the days when Fullerton was an orchard (early 1900’s), the local farmers would bring their produce in from the fields by horse and wagon to sell to the townspeople. The original wood trusses of the old roof system may still be seen in the Venetian Room. Approximately twenty years later, renovation of the building changed it from its original L-shape to a square. This was accomplished by the large wood barrel trusses (an unusual truss!), which can be seen in the Sicilian Room and the Piazza Fantasia.

During our renovation in 1992, the old wood, terra cotta tiles and brick was salvaged and re-used to keep alive the feeling and memories of those days long ago. Be prepared when you walk into Angelo’s and Vinci’s Ristorante to be overwhelmed! With surprises in every corner, you won’t know where to look first! You will sit amidst the art of the great masters, in an Italian town square complete with the storefronts of old Italian butcher and cheese mongers, fruit and wine vendors, seamstresses showing their wares, and more. Fairy lights abound under cathedral ceilings as our ancestors smile down at you from the Family Love Altar. Explore and you will be surrounded by colorful Sicilian puppets, the carnival masks and canals of Venice, and the romance of Romeo & Juliet. Find our mystical Room of the Moon…and don’t forget King Kong, Dracula, Frankenstein, witches, ghosts and who-knows-what that await you in the Monster Wine Cellar!

Founder, Steven Peck, renowned Hollywood dancer, choreographer and veteran actor of over 100 movies and television performances, has delightful photographs of over 40 years of famous stars, directors and dancers. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Broderick Crawford, Kirk Douglas, Walter Winchell, Sam Wanamaker, Vincent Minnelli, Sylvester Stallone, Ted Danson, David Hasselhof, Ray Sharkey, Shirley MacLaine, Cyd Charisse, Dolly Parton, Joan Collins, Raquel Welch, Olympia Dukakis, Shelly Winters and so many more. Films from Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros., MGM, Desilu, United Artists, Universal Studios, to name a few.

Through experimentation and long hours in the kitchen, she’s recreated some of her favorite chocolate desserts as better-for-you interpretations that pass the taste test: Bittersweet Chocolate Truffles (with a variety of flavor variations), a Brooklyn Blackout Layer Cake, a Sacher Torte, even chocolate Moon Pies! Her detailed instructions make for professional-quality outcomes every time: it’s like a personal baking class, right in your kitchen. The perfect gift for anyone with a sweet tooth, Vegan Chocolate is sure to become an instant classic.

12/10 ROGER DOW, THE U.S. TRAVEL ASSOCIATION, JIM LAUGHREN, CHAMPAGNE

ROGER DOW, CEO OF THE U.S. TRAVEL ASSOCIATION - EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL HAS A PROFOUND EFFECT ON ACADEMIC AND CAREER SUCCESS

2014 is right around the corner – have you used your vacation time for the year?  It turns out that Americans and their families are missing out on more than they realize when their vacation days run out at the end of this month. According to a new study by the U.S. Travel Association, taking the time for educational travel has a profound effect on academic and career success.  The "Travel Improves Educational Attainment & Future Success" report revealed that adults who took learning-focused trips between the ages of 12 and 18 had higher incomes, and achieved higher grades than those who did not travel.  Adults who traveled were more likely to graduate from high school, and 63 percent of that group went on to graduate from college, according to the report.

This groundbreaking research shows that even short trips with family to learn about local culture, history or nature can have major impacts on future career success.  As the year draws to a close and New Year’s resolutions are upon us, would you be interested in hosting Roger Dow, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, to share the results with your listeners?

JIM LAUGHREN, CERTIFIED WINE AND BEER EXPERT DISCUSSES CHAMPAGNE FOR THE SEASON

Jim Laughren, Certified wine and beer expert, author of the award-winning A Beer Drinker’s Guide to Knowing and Enjoying Fine Wine,  has been on ABC Food and countless ABC, CBS and NPR affiliates across the US just returned from a pilgrimage to Champagne, France and he has quite a different perspective.
Perhaps serendipitous, he was not prepared for the large American Flag perched high on a hill waving graciously over Champagne. The information his “driver” shared with him about the deep history and sacred “love” the French feel towards American soldiers is both untold and heart-warming.

“On the brink of the holiday season, this was a touching reminder of how much we depend on others, on friends and family, on colleagues and allies, Laughren says.”  “I asked, with some hesitation, others in Champagne about this historic battle. All concurred; the Americans’ amazing bravery and refusal to retreat saved their nation.”

JOHN LINDQUIST – THE TAM O’SHANTER UNVEILS A FRESH NEW LOOK

Historic 91-Year Old Restaurant Updates Logo, Menu and Uniforms! Tam O’Shanter, a member of the Lawry’s family of restaurants and one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles, has redesigned its logo, menu, and uniforms. The new design aesthetic pays homage to the Tam’s legendary Scottish roots while retaining the sense of fun and whimsy that are hallmarks of the venerable restaurant.

The new logo features a lightning bolt, an allusion to a line in Scottish poet Robert Burns’ 1791 poem “Tam O’Shanter”, after which the restaurant is named. The lightning bolt, first seen in the Tam’s towering neon sign of the 1930s and 40s, has been reintroduced as a symbol of the new energy at the popular Atwater Village eatery and bar.

The menu design, which has changed several times over the Tam’s long history, now contains playful, Scottish influenced language and humor and brings back a colorful character from the restaurant’s past, Mr. McTavish.

New server uniforms have a more informal, contemporary look. Updates of classic elements — tams (or caps), tartan vests and denim kilts — honor the Scottish theme while conveying a renewed sense of spirit and fun. In the lobby, guests will discover the “Wall O’Scotch” – a display of over 102 single malts and blends from distilleries across the globe. They’ll also find new, comfortable seating in the lobby’s traditional corner Snug. For reservations and information, please call (323) 664-0228 or visit TamOShanter.com.

About Tam O’Shanter: Delighting diners for over 90 years, the Tam O'Shanter is Los Angeles' oldest restaurant operated by the same family in the same location. Guests enjoy good cheer, warm hospitality, and exceptional food in a cozy old world atmosphere. If you have some Scottish ancestry, you might even find your family tartan among the extensive collection decorating the walls! Tam O’Shanter is located at 2980 Los Feliz Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90039.

12/05 Courtney Taira, King's Hawaiian Bread, Melissa Gerstein, The Moms

Courtney Taira - King's Hawaiian Bread

Our mouthwatering tale begins in the 1950's in Hilo, Hawaii. There Robert Taira, the Hawaiian-born son of Japanese immigrants opened his first bakeshop, Robert's Bakery, after graduating top of his baking class. The first round, soft loaves of Original Recipe King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread were made here. The loaves rarely ever made it home before being devoured, and a local traditional island favorite was born. (Or should we say baked?)

After nearly a decade of growing popularity, in 1963 the much-loved original shop expanded and moved to King Street in Honolulu, where it was renamed King's Bakery. It didn't take long for the new location to become a beloved institution as locals lined up around the block for Robert's famous breads and cakes which were prepared and served with Aloha Spirit, an expression of caring and sharing that is an essential part of island culture. King's Bakery was on the map and Original Hawaiian Sweet Bread was shipped to the mainland by locals and tourists alike as gifts to family and friends. But an entrepreneur at heart, Robert was inspired to spread the Aloha Spirit to the mainland. So in 1977 a new 24,000-square-foot bakery was built in Torrance California. And we called it, what else? King's Hawaiian Bakery.

Missing personal interaction with King's Hawaiian fans, Robert opened a family run bakery and restaurant in Torrance. The menu included Robert's legendary tropical cakes, along with traditional Hawaiian fare. In 1983, Robert responded to more and more requests for new ways to enjoy King's Hawaiian by baking up the 12-pack of Original Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls. Always true to his original recipe – in 1986, Robert baked up Honey Wheat Round Bread, to the delight of bread-lovers everywhere. As more people grew to love King's Hawaiian, the business grew as well. So, an additional 40,000 square-feet were added to the bread bakery on Normandie Avenue in Torrance. Despite the giant addition, it was soon impossible to keep up with the growing number of new fans enjoying King's Hawaiian products every day, and Robert's company was destined for further expansion.

In 2002, not far from the existing sit-down restaurant and bakery in Torrance, King's Hawaiian opened The Local Place Bakery & Café. Today, three generations of the Taira family continue Robert's legacy of serving up irresistibly delicious breads and Hawaiian foods. And of course, there's Aloha in every bite™. What started as a small bakery in Hilo, Hawaii is now a national brand with products available in grocery stores across the United States. Look for your favorites in the deli section and in-store bakery of your local stores. But our bread rarely makes it to the table, so better yet, buy two!
