04/30 Milt Larsen: Magic Castle, Napa Valley Vintners

04/30 What's Cookin' Today

Milt Larsen "Magic Castle"

MON APRIL 30 - As one of Los Angeles most recognized Hollywood landmarks approaches the eve of its 50th anniversary as a popular tourist destination, The Magic Castle (having celebrated the 100th anniversary of the structure - known as Lane Manor - a year ago) and the Academy of Magical Arts will, for the first time in its history, host an "Women In Magic Week" from May 7th to 13th. The artistry of illusion and magic can trace its roots as far back as the Egyptian Pharaohs - predating film, television and even the vaudeville stage by centuries. However, the revered title of Magician was always reserved for the men, while women were often dubbed sorceress or simply a witch. Producer, Dale Hindman, has secured some of the finest female magician performers for the occasion. Included among those who have successfully conquered the male dominated industry of illusion are Luna Shimada (daughter of longtime magic legend Shimada), Suzzane (first female recipient of the Close Up Magician of the Year award), and 9 other lady magicians. The Magic Castle will be honoring one of its own pioneers of illusion, the beloved Gerri Larsen. Without whom, as the mother of the Founders, The Magic Castle would never exist. Gerrie Larsen was a regular on local television in Los Angeles and performed her own full show for many years. A tribute of clips featuring her performances will be included in the Palace Theatre during the week with occasional commentary by son and Co-Founder, Milt Larsen. In addition, Liberty Larsen (great granddaughter of Gerrie) will be the MC in the palace and performing one of her great grandmother's signature trick

MON APRIL 30 - Join the Must-Attend Event of the Year in Napa Valley! April is National Grilled Cheese Month

Oooey, gooey ribbons of delectable melted cheese sandwiched between butter-crisped slices of sourdough, wheat, rye, and even focaccia and croissant, combined with favorite foods such as bacon, pequillo peppers, guacamole, seasonal veggies, caramelized onions, pears, herbs, and so much more--what is there not to love about the modern grilled cheese? Inside Grilled Cheese, Please, award-winning cheese expert Laura Werlin presents 50 recipes that elevate the classic grilled cheese sandwich to a culinary center-of-the-plate meal changer through innovative and delicious recipes such as Say Ole (Two Cheeses, Guacamole, Bacon, and a Corn Chip Crust); Brie, Mozzarella, and Sauteed Pears with Blue Cheese Butter; and Cheddar, Chorizo, Apples, and Pickled Onions on Ciabatta. Melissa Stackhouse,VP of Winemaking for JWinery

Agriculture has played an important role in the life of Melissa Stackhouse.
Growing up in a Michigan farming community, and having grandparents who were farmers in rural Minnesota, she became keenly aware of their dedication to the land at an early age. ?Their hard work resulted in many wonderful meals, cooked with the fresh ingredients straight from the farm,? says Stackhouse. ?I developed an appreciation for fresh food from the garden, and it ultimately led to agriculture as a career choice.? After spending some time in New Zealand working on organic farms, Melissa decided to pursue grape growing and winemaking. She enrolled in the University of California at Davis, where in 1998 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology. While earning her degree, and in the years following, she worked at such prestigious wineries as Robert Mondavi, Peter Michael, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Sterling Vineyards, and Alexander Valley Cellars. In 2003, she moved to Sonoma County to pursue her interest in Pinot Noir by becoming the winemaker at La Crema. It was there that she took notice of Sonoma County?s Russian River Valley and its distinctive soils, numerous clonal selections, and cool-climate vineyards. Melissa remained winemaker at La Crema until 2010 when she was named Winemaster for all Pinot Noir production at Jackson Family Wines. In her role at J Vineyards & Winery, Melissa builds upon existing programs built around the ten Estate-owned vineyards. She also works to develop long-term relationships with key growers in the Russian River Valley. ?Each one of our vineyards has a unique personality,? she says. ?We are going to dig deep into the soil to better understand and encourage the right expression of flavor for each estate vineyard. It is important to distinguish and separate these flavor profiles, whether it becomes a J varietal wine, or a J sparkling wine.?

LOUISIANA LT. GOVERNOR JAY DARDENNE

LIVE FROM THE LOUISIANA COAST IN GRAND ISLE

Two years after the BP oil spill disaster just off the Louisiana coast, tourism in the Louisianacoastal parishes is still suffering major declines based on pre-spill data.

According to Louisiana Tourism Coastal Coalition Chairman Violet Peters,
"Our coastal business owners who rely on tourism are still feeling the
impact of the spill. Many charter fishing operations are booking fewer than
half the charters they were booking prior to the spill, and yet the fishing
is better than ever." The Louisiana Tourism Coastal Coalition created the
state's first-ever coastal tourism campaign with a $5 million outlay from BP
tourism funds, but the campaign ends in June. Said Peters, "When reviewing
other oil spill disasters as a model, it is evident that it can take more
than five years for disaster areas to recover fully as a tourism
destination. We are just now starting to experience some uptrends in some of
our coastal tourism areas and the campaign is coming to an end." The BP oil
spill disaster occurred on April 20, 2010. The Louisiana Tourism Coastal
Coalition is comprised of 10 tourism leaders who represent the coastal
Louisiana tourism offices. According to coalition members, charter fishing
operations are experiencing the biggest downtrend in out-of-state tourists,
but parks, recreation and other coastal tourism attractions in Louisiana are
also still feeling the impact. Louisiana Charter Fishing Association members
have also indicated their concern regarding the end of BP's assistance to
promote the full return of their business. Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne will
be live on the Gulf of Mexico at Sand Dollar Marina in Grand Isle,
Louisiana. He is available to discuss what steps are next for Louisiana and
why the state needs the support of BP to bring tourists back to the
 Louisiana Coast.

About Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne (Dar-Den) - Jay Dardenne was reelected to a
four-year term as Louisiana's Lieutenant Governor in October 2011. He
previously served one year in that position, filling an unexpired term. He
also served four years as Secretary of State and fifteen years as a State
Senator. During his legislative service, he chaired the Senate Finance
Committee. In 2003, he was named National Republican Legislator of the Year.

interact with, other cultures revolves around and depends on food & drink.
So we are building FoodTrekker to ensure the survival of local independent
businesses everywhere. Chances are, if you're reading this, you agree. Local
businesses have a hard time competing against chains. And we know that you
yourself don't need help finding an internationally recognizable burger or
latte. So we exclude global, national, and regional chain businesses from
FoodTrekker and give local business a chance to shine. (We do allow local
chains, within reason). It is an immutable law that anyone working at
FoodTrekker be an avid foodie. When we aren't working hard to build the

Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband Frank (Tony Award nominee Brian d’Arcy James, “Shrek The Musical”) of many years, but her focus is torn when she has the opportunity to write another Broadway hit. A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty Karen (Katharine McPhee, “American Idol”) – who is trying to find fame in the big city against all odds – and stage veteran Ivy Bell (Megan Hilty, “9 to 5: The Musical”), who's determined to leave the chorus line and finally get her big break. A tenacious producer Eileen (Oscar winner, Anjelica Huston, “Prizzi's Honor”) discovers the “Marilyn” project and jumps on board with a brilliant director, Derek (Jack Davenport, “Pirates of the Caribbean” films) – whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric amorality. The Santa Maria Valley Wine Country Association

The Santa Maria Valley Wine Country Association will work as a single community voice to elevate, protect and promote the premium wines of this historical, coastal growing region. The Santa Maria Valley Wine Country works in tandem within the local community in an effort to promote the Santa Maria Valley wine growing region. Located at the gateway to Santa Barbara Wine Country, the Santa Maria Valley is the northern most AVA of Santa Barbara County. We understand and celebrate the importance of terroir as a sense of place. Our unique soil and the maritime influence in this region, which is gaining renown for its cool climate and ideal growing conditions, are perfect for producing coveted Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, Syrahs, and other varietals of great merit. Come to the Santa Maria Valley June 29-July 1, 2012, for an insightful weekend of education and exploration designed to enlighten wine consumers, industry professionals, and media on Chardonnay wine producing regions and wine making styles, and their effects on America’s favorite wine. Now in its third year, The Chardonnay Symposium is the only event of its kind in the United States focusing on the golden grape and hosts more than 50 Chardonnay producers from around the world, celebrity chef demonstrations, food tastings specifically designed to enhance the wine experience and an educational panel session moderated by Wine Enthusiast’s Steve Heimoff. The Grand Chardonnay Tasting on Saturday, June 30, takes place at Byron Vineyard and Winery and local wineries and restaurants will offer a wide variety of winemaker dinners and Chardonnay inspired events throughout the weekend.
