FITNESS Magazine’s Executive Editor Pam O'Brien Offers Insights and Advice From the Experts as We Try to Enjoy More Time Outdoors

You’ve been enjoying the warmer weather – though you have to admit to being sidelined by your allergy symptoms more than once. You might think the worst is over, but what you might not realize is that symptoms can linger well into June. You just want to enjoy what’s left of Spring!

Seasonal allergies affect approximately 46 percent of people in the United States today, and scientists say that the incidence of common adult seasonal allergies has increased by two or three times since the 1970s. In the May 2011 issue of FITNESS Magazine, experts assert that due to rising temperatures, plants are actually producing more pollen than they were in pre-industrial days. So if you’re suffering, you’re not alone. And the good news is that there are ways you can fight and treat your allergies.

Pam O'Brien is the Executive Editor of FITNESS magazine, where she oversees the magazine’s nutrition, fitness, health, beauty, and features coverage. She was formerly Articles Director at Organic Style magazine, Executive Editor of Lifetime magazine, Executive Editor of Ladies' Home Journal, and senior editor of More magazine, a publication she helped launch. Actor Tom Skerritt Reminds Us to Celebrate Summer the Old Fashioned Way - Fishing!

As a celebrity angler and father of four, Tom Skerritt, star of blockbuster films such as Top Gun and A River Runs Through It, knows a thing or two about spending quality family time on the water. So, in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week Tom, in tandem with Take Me Fishing™ is urging kids, families and outdoor adventurers to celebrate summer the “old-fashioned way” — by getting outside and making some real memories on the water
.

According to a 2010 Special Report on Fishing and Boating, fishing is recognized as the top “gateway-to-the-outdoors” activity spurring involvement in other outdoor interest. In fact, in 2009, fishing participants made 996 million outings. National Fishing and Boating Week offers plenty of opportunities for those interested in taking out a boat or tossing in a line. With free fishing days in 37 of the 50 states and thousands of places to boat and fish, most people are only a few miles from the nearest river, lake, stream or ocean. And, what many people don’t realize is that a portion of all fishing bait, tackle, license, as well as boat supply and registrations, goes toward local and national conservation efforts. That means boating and fishing isn’t just fun, it helps sustain resources that promote safe and responsible use of our nation’s waters.

To jumpstart the week, the Take Me Fishing™ campaign has even developed the ‘Memories on the Water’ contest running from June 2 – July 1, 2011. During that time visitors to the Take Me Fishing™ Facebook Page will have the opportunity to submit a short video — new or old — showcasing a memorable moment on the water. One grand prize winner will be selected, earning a trip for four to their choice of fishing and boating destinations.

For a listing of places to boat and fish, local events taking place during National Fishing and Boating Week and information about free fishing days, visit TakeMeFishing.org.

However, respondents to another recent survey indicate that only 23 percent of baby boomers are very concerned they might have to deal with a digestive health issue as they age. These findings show a need for baby boomers to “listen to their stomachs” and become more knowledgeable about digestive health.

Maye Musk, MS RD is a registered dietitian who has helped thousands of people eat well and maintain good digestive health. Her first MS degree's research was based on bowel disorders and how to alleviate discomfort. Maye’s dynamic career has spanned 40 years and seven cities in three countries. She has worked as a trusted nutrition expert with numerous corporations, associations and universities all over the world. She has appeared on CNN, ABC, Fox, CBS, Court TV and Discovery Health, and been quoted in Prevention, Shape, Fitness, More and Men's Health magazines. Her book, Feel Fantastic (out of print), is a complete encyclopedia of good health habits, empowering readers to live their best life every day. It was featured on one million Special K cereal boxes throughout Canada. In 2006, Maye’s colleagues in dietetics awarded her the Outstanding Nutrition Entrepreneur of the Year Award, a great honor. Maye continues with helping people enjoy good health through speaking, media work, writing and her private practice in New York City.

We're Heading Over to VML Winery with Virginia Marie Lambrix!

While on vacation in South Africa, Virginia Lambrix tasted her first “serious wine.” At that time, she had received her B.A in Psychology from Colgate University, NY and was working for the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology. Captured always by a love of nature and the out of doors, she determined it was time to learn about the art of the vineyard - viticulture. Within a year, Virginia was studying horticulture and agronomy in the master’s program at the University of California, Davis, with an emphasis on viticulture and enology. Upon graduation from UC Davis, she worked at the Hendry Ranch in Napa, in Chile for Concha y Toro.

In 2004, Virginia visited a Biodynamic farm in Chile, and again, was captured. It was immediately clear to her that its principals of respecting nature and nurturing ecology within the vineyard made sense in both a scientific framework and on an intuitive level. She embraced the philosophy and made a point to study and implement its principals at every opportunity. With this knowledge she returned to work in California for Lynmar and De Loach Vineyards, both in the Russian River Valley. During her 3 years at De Loach Vineyards, Virginia worked closely with her growers moving their vineyards to more sustainable farming methodologies and in the process, improving quality and moderating farming costs. Her mentor at De Loach, Greg La Follette, taught her to understand both vineyards and winemaking at an intuitive level.

Working side by side with winemakers, Hugh Chappelle at Lynmar Estate and Greg La Follette, Virginia couldn’t help but to follow their winemaking with interest and began making wine. In 2008 she began making wine for Truett Hurst Winery. Bringing her former background in the Russian River Valley to the attention of the Truett Hurst team she added Russian River Valley wines to the winery’s portfolio. Today she oversees winemaking for the brands of H.D.D. LLC consisting of Truett Hurst wines in Dry Creek Valley, VML Winery in Russian River Valley, as well as the Bradford Mountain and Healdsburg Ranches brands.

Virginia is a strong advocate for alternative agriculture. She is currently on the Demeter Board for education on biodynamic farming with the goal of developing educational resources for farmers that are pursuing biodynamic farming.

Jacqueline Maduneme’s life should have been paved with the types of stories little girls dream of, but the landscape of her life was torn apart by a commanding and overbeari
ng father and a series of horrors that would tear most anyone apart and ruin them for life.

For Jacqueline, a promising childhood from a loving family turned terribly wrong as the life of this Nigerian-born Princess began to unravel when her father, a tribal Chief and Prime Minister, manifested terrorizing and selfish behavior that tore at the heart of the lives of Jacqueline, her brother, David and her Mother, Ada.

General Manager Christine Forsythe Talks About The Ballard Inn & Restaurant!

Built in 1985 as a country inn, The Ballard Inn & Restaurant is set in the historic township of Ballard, centrally located in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s noted wine country. Ballard is 35 minutes north of Santa Barbara, and just a few minutes drive from the larger towns of the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang, Santa Ynez, and Los Olivos.

The township of Ballard was founded in 1880, named for the proprietor of an original Wells Fargo stage coach station, and remains a very small town, with a population of under 1000. Just a short walk from the Inn, Ballard's Little Red School House, built in 1882, is still in operation today.

Stephan Parino Tells Us About Denbeste Vineyards & Bill DenBeste's Shelby Automobile Collection!

DenBeste Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery that has approximately four acres of Zinfandel in the northern section of wine-rich Alexander Valley. This area is the largest grape growing region in Sonoma County and the northern portion is commonly referred to the place where the vineyards meet the redwoods. The location of the vineyard is nestled on the eastern side of the north valley between the historic town of Asti and the rustic city of Cloverdale.

The vines were originally planted in 1957 as Carignane but were switched to Zinfandel in 1983 by Paul DenBeste. While managing this vineyard, Paul worked at the Italian-Swiss colony in local Asti for over two decades. It has since been passed on to Paul’s brother, Jim and our first bottling occurred in 2003. This historic bottling would not have been a reality if not for the help of William and Lori DenBeste.

Bill DenBeste has spent his life as an avid collector of automobiles. His greatest interest as a car enthusiast has been as a Shelby Automobile Collector. Like all dedicated automobile collectors and car lovers, he has an extensive understanding of the unique qualities that a superior automobile encompasses. Bill’s love of the Shelby Automobile design has lead to a lifelong appreciation and commitment to sharing his passion and experiences with others. He founded DenBeste Motorsports, LLC with the intention of enabling others to have the option of owning one of America’s most desirable cars ever constructed. Bill believes in the legacy of the Shelby and his background in owning such a remarkably built car, has taken his interest into other areas of the automobile industry.

Bill’s personal admiration for the Shelby automobile has inspired him to become actively involved in racing. He has had the fortunate opportunity to be a partner in the NASCAR Busch Series, fielding the GEICO #4 car and the AutoZone car #57 including such notable drivers as Mike Wallace, Boris Said and Auggie Vidovich. Bill has affiliated himself with this venue in order to continue fulfilling his personal enjoyment, as well as, strengthen his expertise as collector and a fan of NASCAR.

DenBeste MS operates out of a 30,000 sq ft building in Windsor, CA. where Mr. Denbeste stores and displays his 75 + car collection. He is also a Shelby Continuation car dealer and he will have CSX 4000, CSX 9000, GT40s, and Daytona Coupes on display and available for purchase. There will be a tour of their shop and facilities. He even bottles some of his own wine, which will be available for tasting. There is plenty of parking around the building and it is easily accessed from Hwy 101.
