After the birth of our first daughter, Grace, and several years of city motherhood, we moved to Westchester County where I found friends and home, not to mention a place to park my stroller. Our house centered around my great kitchen window where I can look out and see the glorious seasons change against my garden and stone wall. The birth of my second daughter, Katie, prompted me to try it my own way as a lifestyle expert and author. Punch, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere, Fairy Parties and The Stylish Girl's Guide to Fabulous Cocktails were soon born along with my son, Jack -- making my family of five complete.   iVillage Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NBC Universal, Inc., is the first and most established media company dedicated exclusively to connecting women at every stage of their lives. iVillage.com offers an authentic and robust community infused with compelling content from experts on health, parenting, pregnancy, beauty, style, fitness, relationships, food and entertainment. Greg Grunberg - "Heroes"
Television and film star Greg Grunberg learned that epilepsy can affect anyone at anytime when his son Jake was diagnosed with the condition at the age of seven. Since Jake’s diagnosis, Greg, star of the hit series “Heroes,” has become a personal hero to his son and many others by bringing epilepsy to light on the national stage.  Like most families, Greg and his wife knew nothing about epilepsy when Jake was first diagnosed. They turned to doctors, books and the internet to learn as much as they could about the condition. Through their searches, they discovered EpilepsyAdvocate.com , a community of people whose lives are directly impacted by epilepsy, including those with epilepsy, their caregivers, friends and family. These remarkable individuals share their epilepsy challenges and triumphs so that others are empowered to seek the best care to attain the goal of epilepsy independence—seizure freedom and minimal side effects.   Greg became Jake’s advocate by seeking medical care from and collaborating with someone who specializes in epilepsy. Today, through his involvement with the Epilepsy Advocate program, Greg has worked tirelessly to educate and empower not only people living with epilepsy, but also their friends and families.

4/29 - Peter Van Sant, Maureen Petrosky, Kathyrne Sansone, Danny Pudi, Larry Lipson,

Peter Van Sant - "48 Hours Mystery"
A Killer Defense

Saturday, May 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT - Two years after his wife’s death, Dr. Kirk Turner sat in a North Carolina courtroom, watching prosecutors lay out their murder case against him. He does admit killing his wife but claims it was self defense.  Kirk Turner and his wife Jennifer appeared to be a perfect match, until their 23 year-marriage came to an abrupt end when Kirk announced that he was leaving her. While Kirk denied that his decision was the result of an affair, Jennifer learned that he was indeed cheating on her – with the family’s personal banker. The Turners had seen incredible professional success, he a renowned dentist and she a horse breeder and with the a lot of money on the line – a 10,000 square foot house, a 35 acre horse farm and a collection of vintage corvettes – the split quickly became nasty. In addition to filing for divorce, Jennifer, determined to go after Kirk’s girl friend, filed an Alienation of Affection lawsuit against her. The family was splintered, their children Wendy and Ritchie picked sides – she with her mother and he with his father. According to Wendy, Kirk kept pressuring her mother to drop the lawsuit and that her mother feared for her life. Then, on September 12, 2007, Kirk showed Jennifer two documents – an order that he planned to file with the court to force the sale for the farm and an affidavit from her first husband claiming that the marriage failed because of Jennifer’s obsession with horses. According to Kirk, Jennifer became so enraged that she grabbed a seven-foot long decorative spear and plunged it into his leg repeatedly and that he was defending himself when he slit her throat with his pocket knife and nearly decapitated her.  While Kirk is adamant that it was self defense, investigators and prosecutors say the evidence showed otherwise. They believe that Kirk planned to kill his wife that day and that he even went so far as to cover it up by stabbing himself with the spear. But what would a jury think? Was Kirk Turner merely protecting himself or was this premeditated?   Peter Van Sant reports on 48 HOURS MYSTERY: “A Killer Defense,” Saturday, May 1, (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Food Network’s Robin Miller  CUT BACK ON SALT
Vinegar In, Salt Out . Use intensely-flavored, aged vinegars in place of salt in sauces, dressings, marinades, and “drizzles” for steamed and roasted meat, poultry, fish and vegetables. Keep a hearty stash of salt-free dried herbs and spices, such as oregano, thyme, curry powder, cumin, chili powder, etc. Grab these instead of salt to enhance the flavor of sweet and savory. For example, nutmeg brings out the cheese flavor in dishes made with cheese (casseroles, egg dishes, etc.) Before roasting, create “crusts” for chicken, fish and pork by coating them with finely chopping, unsalted nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and peanuts.Just before serving, add the grated peel of lemons and/or limes to pasta, rice, fish, and vegetable dishes. The subtle tartness eliminates the need for salt!   Instead of prepared sauces, make your own! In a blender, combine roasted red peppers (home-made!), balsamic vinegar, fresh garlic, fresh parsley or basil, olive oil, and ground black pepper. Puree until smooth. *Robin will be working with Mrs. Dash for this segment and her low sodium recipes can all be found on http://www.mrsdash.com/

Celebrity Chef Kerry Simon -   "Simon LA"
Kerry Simon is a celebrity chef and the executive chef and proprietor at his namesake restaurant "Simon" at Palms Place in Las Vegas, Nevada. His other restaurants are Cathouse in Las Vegas, NV and Simon LA, in Los Angeles, California. Simon was dubbed One of America's Greatest Chefs by Rolling Stone magazine.  Simon has also appeared on Iron Chef America challenging and defeating Cat Cora in Battle Hamburger. He has also judged for Iron Chef America.  Aside from Iron Chef America, he has made other appearances on television. He can also be seen on an episode of the Fine Living's What Makes it Tick, produced by NorthSouth Productions. "He's movie-star handsome. Can he cook?" murmured my date as I introduced her to Chef Kerry Simon at a recent food function. "Yes, he's one of our finest and most successful chefs," I laughingly replied. But I could understand her inquiry: Kerry, at 53, is a great looking guy at the height of his powers as a chef and entrepreneur, and probably ready to seek new horizons....so serious acting in films or on TV is a natural move for him. But he defers my query when I suggest it; "I really don't have any interest in doing a cooking show on television, but as far as real dramatic acting ...I don't know, it's an intriguing possibility," he told me at a recent dinner at his SIMON LA RESTAURANT in the 295-room Sofitel Hotel at Beverly Blvd and La Cienega (8555 Beverly Blvd, right across from the Beverly Center (310) 358-3979) with valet parking).  I told my friend that Kerry had competed against Iron Chef Cat Cora on that iconic television show and defeated the champion with a hamburger! (something which people talk about to this day.) Three years ago I reviewed his local restaurant after he opened it to much acclaim, coming from his then-Las Vegas venue - Prime, at Steve Wynn's Bellagio Hotel (which Kerry then left after a change in management); he was seeking to achieve a higher presence in the L.A. market. From time to time, readers have reported having wonderful dinners here...but the restaurant doesn't seem to have achieved the wide acclaim Kerry has achieved in Las Vegas. On a recent trip there, I stopped in at Simon Palms Place at the Malouf's Palms Place hotel/condo just off the strip, but it was so jammed I couldn't get a table. (I did walk over to view the six shelves of potted herbs on a glass wall in the rear of the restaurant....talk about having a green environment.) And his second restaurant in Las Vegas, Cathouse at the Luxor Hotel, is equally hot, but not quite my thing. (Although decorated like a Parisian brothel, I'm told the food is serious.)  When Air France acquired the Sofitel Hotel in L.A. they were seeking a high-end steak house and offered the venue to Kerry, who was partnered with Jean-George Vongerichten at the Vegas Prime eatery. (Funny, the French have never been noted for their steak houses, despite the fact that their dish of steak frites is a standard in every bistro. When I visit Paris, I realize that not only don't they have any major steak restaurants, they don't even understand the concept...they never get it thick enough...they don't even have broilers in their kitchens.) Kerry had joined with partners Elizabeth Blau and her husband, Kim Canteenwalla, to open on Simon Kitchen and Bar at Peter Morton's Hard Rock Hotel in late 2002...when the Gallic guys came calling a few years later to come to L.A. Kerry, once called by Rolling Stone "The Rock 'n Roll Chef," told me that he had always wanted to come here. (The story behind that designation is fascinating: when Donald and Ivana Trump bought The Plaza Hotel in New York, she was in charge of selecting the new chef for the stately Edwardian Room. After interviewing every available chef in town, Kerry walked in, cooked her a dinner or two, easily charmed her, and manned the kitchen there for three years. When several rock star friends (David Bowe, Iman, Debbie Harry) came for dinner and ate at a table in the kitchen, the word got out and the 'Chef's Table' became the hottest spot in town...soon people were clamoring to eat there and it was booked two months in advance. Chef's Tables have since proliferated all over the world.)

Jon Palfreman  Frontline "The Vaccine War” (TONIGHT ON PBS/CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS)
Public health scientists and clinicians tout vaccines as one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine. But for many ordinary Americans vaccines have become controversial. Young parents are concerned at the sheer number of shots--some 26 inoculations for 14 different diseases by age 6--and follow alternative vaccination schedules.  Other parents go further. In communities like Ashland, Oregon, up to one-third of parents are choosing not to vaccinate their kids at all. And some advocacy groups, like Generation Rescue, argue that vaccines are no longer a public health miracle but a scourge; they view vaccines as responsible for alarming rises in certain disorders, including ADHD and autism.  FRONTLINE producer Jon Palfreman (“Sick Around America,” “Sick Around the World”)

4/26 - Kimberly Locke, Larry Van Aalst, Robin Doody,

KIMBERLY LOCKE -  SINGING STAR & AMERICAN IDOL FINALIST
Kimberley Dawn Locke (born January 3, 1978) is an American singer and plus-size fashion model who has achieved success in the dance, pop and adult contemporary music genres. She gained fame with her participation in the 2003 American Idol television series, and in 2007 garnered media attention for her participation in Celebrity Fit Club. In 2010, following a six year contract with Curb Records, Kimberley became the first artist signed to Randy Jackson's dance music label, Dream Merchant 21.  Locke was born in Hartsville, Tennessee, to Donald and Christine Locke, an African-American truck driver and a Caucasian clothing warehouse worker for the Gap/Old Navy distribution center in Gallatin, Tennessee. She is the second of two children, with an older brother named Ashley. She and her brother spent most of their life in Gallatin. At age five, Locke began singing in church. Her parents divorced when she was eight years old. Locke grew up admiring such singers as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle and Diana Ross. In 1987, she and childhood friends Chandra Boone, Selina Robb, and NaCole Rice formed a quartet named Shadz of U, which performed at many local churches. The group later appeared on Locke's 2007 Based On A True Story album, singing backup on Everyday Angels. Locke went to Gallatin High School, where she was one of sixteen members to participate in its performing group. She remained in the group throughout her high-school years. She was also selected twice as a member of the All-Middle State Chorus. After graduating, she began to work for a company in Nashville as an administrative assistant. Like 2007 American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle, Locke is an alumna of Belmont University in Nashville. On October 30, 2002, the reality-TV singing competition American Idol held auditions in Nashville, Tennessee for the show's second season. Locke successfully passed through to the next round, and in December was chosen to perform on the show. She finished third, behind runner up Clay Aiken and eventual champion Ruben Studdard. Simon Cowell at first criticized Locke as lacking in personality; by the final three however, he declared her, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard to be as worthy winners as any. She has since been invited back to the show to perform twice (seasons 3 and 7).  Locke went on to sign a record deal with Curb Records on September 6, 2003. Her debut album, One Love, was released May 4, 2004. Debut single "8th World Wonder" reached the top half of the Billboard Hot 100 and was successful on other charts, and even entered the UK chart with little promotion. "Wrong" and "I Could" followed as singles and were hits on the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts respectively. "Coulda Been" was the album's only single not to chart.  Locke released her version of "Up On The Housetop" in Fall 2005 and by the end of year it had reached the top spot of the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts and broke many records, due to its quick rise to the top. The following year, Kimberley's version of "Jingle Bells" was released and topped the same charts. A full Christmas album entitled Christmas — only available digitally — was released on November 6, 2007. Locke's second album, Based On A True Story, was released on May 1, 2007. The album's original lead single, "Supawoman," co-written with her producers Damon Sharpe and Mark J. Feist, was released to radio on August 7, 2006, however after underwhelming radio support, Curb Records decided to refocus. "Change," was released to radio on January 15, 2007 to positive support and climbed the charts well into the summer of 2007. The album's next single was a cover of Freda Payne's "Band of Gold," which was released to radio on August 13, 2007 and became Locke's 6th solo AC Top 10 hit. The album's third single,"Fall," co-written by Clay Mills was also recorded by country music artist Clay Walker, was released to radio in February 2008. All three singles from this album hit #1 on the Billboard dance club chart.  After parting ways with Curb Records in 2009, Kimberley signed a deal with Randy Jackson's Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment record label  and immediately got to work on her upcoming single "Strobelight", to be released April 6, 2010 .

Mike Benziger - Benziger Family Winery
Not only are more farmers realizing that it's better for their land and health to grow more sustainably, but more families are rolling up their sleeves and starting to eat and grow green, too. They're shopping at farmers' markets, buying organic, planting gardens and finding a new joy in food. Most of our food is still produced on huge industrial farms and shipped thousands of miles. We dig it out from layers of plastic without knowing where it came from, when it was harvested, or if it has any nutritional value left. All over the country, people are calling for locally produced, healthy, fresh, affordable food. The 2010 winners is Mike Benziger, founder of Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen, CA, won in the new Water Steward category for his industry-leading methods of water use reduction and water recycling. With an innovative constructed wetland and pond treatment system, Benziger Winery recycles an average of 2 million gallons of water per year. The winery significantly decreases water inputs using new grape sorting technologies, water sensors and cover crops that reduce runoff. They’ve seen the quality of their grapes and wines increase noticeably.  Who are the farmers and food pioneers across the country who are helping us rethink the food we eat and its impacts on the environment? Four winners of the second annual Growing Green Awards were announced April 13 by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). These individuals address the growing demand for healthier, more sustainable food.

Catherine McCord - American fashion model, actress, television
McCord appeared in "Gridiron Gang" staring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and began modeling for Elite Model Management at the age of 14. She has modeled for Victoria's Secret and L’eggs pantyhose, appeared on the covers of Glamour and ELLE magazines, and done runway modeling for Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. For a time, she was one of the female co-hosts of MTV's Loveline television show. FHM magazine readers voted her one of the sexiest women in the world for 2001. A born athlete, Catherine excelled at running and basketball, and was working towards an athletic scholarship when she got a devastating hip injury. Soon after, when a friend signed her up for a local modeling contest, little did Catherine know that this would be the first step on the path to a successful modeling career. Discovered by Elite Models Management at 15, Catherine went on to win “Look of the Year,” Elite’s premiere and prestigious modeling contest. From there, she spent her summers in New York or Paris, modeling for Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and other prestigious designers in the fashion industry. Catherine soon ventured into television, as well, landing roles as reporter on Extra!, Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve, and a run as co-host on MTV’s Loveline with Dr. Drew and Adam Corrola. Fortunately, Catherine avoided the pitfalls many young models find themselves in, such as drug abuse and eating disorders, attributing her success to a strong sense of family values, and an understanding about what she needed to give her body in order for it to function properly. Her parents supported her modeling career and grounded her with guidance. Catherine’s dad encouraged her to save her money so that she could one day afford to focus on her true passion – cooking and food. That time came in 2002, soon after the devastating attacks of 9/11. Impacted by the tragedy, Catherine decided to finally follow her dreams and enroll at the Institute for Culinary Education in Manhattan. She modeled during the day and went to school at night. “It was a juggle,” she says, but powerfully fulfilling. In hindsight, that juggle was nothing compared to balancing work and family. Now, a wife and mother, Catherine strives to find solutions to the challenges of busy life. After having her children, Catherine realized she wanted them to delight in fresh, seasonal food the way she did as a child. Observing a lack of resources for other parents to do the same, Catherine created Weelicious as a platform to show parents around the world how easy and beneficial it is to expose children early on to whole, delicious, homemade food. “Involving kids in the process,” Catherine concludes, “will help lead them to make healthier choices as they grow.”

Robin Miller - "Robin Rescues Dinner"
Celebrity chef Robin Miller, star of the “Food Network’s” popular show “Quick Fix Meals with Robin Miller” and bestselling author of the cookbooks “Quick Fix Meals” and “Robin to the Rescue: Quick & Simple Recipes for Delicious Home Cooking” as well as six other books, has been a guest on hundreds of television and radio shows (including, but not limited to, “The View”, “Regis & Kelly”, ” “The Early Show”, “The Today Show”, “FOX News Channel”, “CNN”, “Good Morning, America”, “CBS Evening News”, “Discovery Channel”, “Health Network”, and “Joan Lunden’s Women’s Supermarket Network”,
The average American consumes almost 3,500 to 4,000 milligrams of sodium per day~far more than the recommended daily intake of 2,300 milligrams (or one teaspoon). That is 7.6 pounds of salt every year! What makes it worse, salt is now being called the “new Trans fat” which is leading to a new national initiative that was unveiled in January called the National Salt Reduction Initiative~a partnership of cities, states and national health organizations whose goal is to guide a voluntary reduction of salt levels in packaged and restaurant foods. In fact, only 11-percent of the sodium in American’s diets comes from their own saltshakers and almost 80-percent is added to foods before they are sold~causing Americans to consume approximately twice the recommended limit of salt every day and resulting in widespread high blood pressure and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.  Robin, who is the mother of two sons, is the author of the following nine books: “Robin Rescues Dinner: 52 Weeks of Quick-Fix Meals, 350 Recipes, and a Realistic Plan to Get Weeknight Dinners on the Table”, “Robin to the Rescue: Quick & Simple Recipes for Delicious Home Cooking”, “Quick Fix Meals with Robin Miller”, “Picnics”, “Verdure”, “ The Daily Soup”, “Jane Fonda, Cooking for Healthy Living”, and two “The Newlywed Cookbooks.”
